BIOLASE Laser Error Codes Explained: What Each Warning Means and What to Do Next

By the Repair.Dental Technical Team

A warning message in the middle of a procedure is the last thing you want to see. Your schedule is full, your patient is in the chair, and your laser has stopped responding. Every minute of downtime costs chair time and revenue.

This guide is a searchable reference for Biolase laser error codes and Waterlase error codes. It is organized by model family, by the type of warning your laser documents, by the safe checks you can run yourself, and by what to do next. If a warning will not clear, you can always request a free diagnostic evaluation before you decide anything else.

How to use this Biolase error message reference

Biolase laser error messages fall into a small number of categories. Whatever the exact wording on your screen, the warning almost always points to one of these areas: water and air delivery, the fiber or handpiece connection, temperature and cooling, the foot pedal or control inputs, power, or calibration and software.

Exact message wording and code numbers can differ by model and software version. Always match what you see on the display against your operator's manual first. Then use the tables below to understand what the warning category usually means and what to do next.

This matters because a message does not always point to the part that has failed. A water warning can come from a blocked line, a loose connection or a sensor fault. Correct diagnosis is the difference between a quick fix and a repeat failure. If you own a Waterlase or Epic, our team handles Biolase WaterLase and Epic repair every day, and our broader dental laser repair services cover the diagnostics, calibration and performance testing behind these warnings.

Before you troubleshoot: safe first checks

These checks are low-risk and apply to nearly every warning. Run them in order and write down what you see.

Record the message exactly. Note the full wording, any code number, and what the laser was doing when it appeared. A photo of the screen helps.
Stop and let the unit rest. Do not keep firing through a repeated warning. Continued use can turn a small fault into a larger one.
Power cycle once. Shut the system down using the normal procedure, wait a minute, and restart. A one-time warning that does not return is still worth noting.
Check every external connection. Confirm the fiber or handpiece, foot pedal, power cable and any water or air connections are fully seated.
Inspect the tip and delivery system. Look for visible damage, debris or a loose fit, following your manual's handling instructions.
Check the environment. Make sure the unit has airflow around it and is not sitting in a hot, cramped space.

Do not open the laser housing. Internal components carry laser and electrical hazards and should only be handled by a trained technician.

Waterlase error codes: iPlus and Express family

Waterlase systems use water and air delivery alongside the laser energy, so many Waterlase troubleshooting calls involve fluid, handpiece or cooling warnings. Here is how the documented warning types usually break down.

Warning category	What it usually means	Safe initial checks	Recommended next step
Water or air supply warning	The system is not detecting the expected water or air flow	Check the water reservoir level and connections per your manual, look for kinks or loose fittings, and confirm any air supply is connected	If the warning returns after the checks, stop use and request a diagnosis. Flow sensors, valves and internal lines are not user-serviceable
Handpiece or fiber connection warning	The system cannot confirm a secure delivery path	Reseat the handpiece or fiber, inspect the tip, and confirm the connection is clean and dry	Persistent warnings can point to a damaged fiber, connector wear or alignment issues that need a technician
Temperature or cooling warning	Internal temperature is outside the expected range	Let the unit rest, confirm ventilation, and check your manual for cooldown guidance	Repeated overheating warnings suggest a cooling system fault and should be diagnosed before further use
Foot pedal or control warning	The system is not receiving a reliable input	Reconnect the pedal, check the cable, and test the control panel response	Intermittent input is often a failing pedal or control board and is a common repair
Weak or inconsistent output	The beam is not delivering the expected energy	Inspect the tip and fiber, then restart and retest	Output loss can come from fiber alignment or internal laser source problems and calls for performance testing
Calibration or software warning	The system has detected a value outside its set parameters	Note the message, restart once, and avoid repeated attempts to clear it	Recalibration or a software-level repair is typically needed
Power or startup failure	The unit will not start or shuts down unexpectedly	Check the outlet, power cable and any power switches or key controls	If the unit still will not power on, a power supply or internal electrical fault is likely

Epic error messages: diode laser family

Epic lasers are diode lasers, so their warnings tend to center on the laser source, the fiber, power and thermal management rather than water delivery.

Warning category	What it usually means	Safe initial checks	Recommended next step
Fiber or tip warning	The system does not detect a good fiber connection, or the fiber is compromised	Inspect the fiber for damage, reseat it, and confirm the connector is clean	If the warning persists with a known-good fiber, the connector or internal path may need service
Low or inconsistent power output	The diode is not delivering expected output	Test with a fresh, undamaged fiber and check battery or power status where applicable	Diode degradation or malfunction needs performance testing and often a replacement part
Battery or charging warning	The unit is not holding or accepting charge	Check the charger, outlet and connection, and note how long the battery lasts	Power and battery faults are common repairs and should be diagnosed rather than guessed
Overheating warning	The system is running hotter than expected	Pause use, allow cooldown and confirm airflow	Recurring heat warnings point to a cooling problem or internal fault
Control panel or pedal warning	The unit is not reading input correctly	Reconnect the pedal, test the touch or button response and restart	A repair is usually needed if input remains unreliable
Calibration or software warning	A setting or reading is outside expected limits	Restart once and record the message	Calibration or software correction by a technician

When the warning keeps coming back: do not guess

Here is a simple rule. If a warning clears after you reseat a cable or let the unit cool, monitor it and tell your service provider. If the same warning returns, or if it appears alongside weak output or an unexpected shutdown, stop using the laser.

Repeated attempts to push through a fault can damage other components. They can also make the original problem harder to isolate, which can add to your repair time. The most useful thing you can do is write down the message, the date and what the laser was doing, then talk to a laser repair expert who can review it with you.

Our WhatsApp line is also free for technical support at +1.510.990.0111, which is useful if you want a quick opinion while the laser is still in the operatory. Our professional dental laser repair team can tell you whether the symptoms look like a quick fix or something that needs a full diagnostic.

What happens when you send it in

If your checks do not clear the warning, the next step is a proper diagnostic. Small laser equipment ships to the Dentals National Repair Center, and sending it in is easy and free. You can print a free shipping label in a few minutes and have the laser on its way the same day.

Pack the laser with the accessories relevant to the problem, such as the fiber, handpiece, foot pedal and power supply. Include a short note with the exact warning text you recorded. That note saves diagnostic time and helps the technician reproduce the issue.

Repair or replace: what the warning tells you

Most warnings are not a reason to replace your laser. Many of the issues behind them, such as fiber alignment, a failing foot pedal, a cooling fault, a battery problem or a calibration error, are routine repairs. A repair is often a fraction of the cost of a new system, and you keep a unit you already know and trust.

Sending the laser to the manufacturer is another option, but manufacturer repair often takes three to four weeks and may charge for the evaluation. At Repair.Dental, the diagnostic evaluation is free and pricing is transparent before any repair begins, so you can make a clear decision. Costs depend on the issue, which is exactly why the evaluation comes first.

Repair.Dental also services other laser brands, including AMD laser repair, Zolar laser repair, Solea laser repair, SIROLaser repair and Elexxion laser repair.

Frequently asked questions

Here are quick answers, and you can find more in our repair FAQs.

Is it safe to keep using my laser after an error message? If the warning cleared after a simple step like reseating a connection and has not returned, use your judgment and tell your service provider. If it returns or appears with weak output or shutdowns, stop using the laser until it is diagnosed.

Can I clear a Biolase error code myself? You can run the safe first checks above. Anything that involves opening the unit, internal components or calibration should be left to a certified technician.

Why does the same warning appear on different Waterlase models? Warnings describe a category of problem, such as water delivery or temperature. Different models can report the same kind of issue in different words, so match the message to your manual and your exact model.

How long does repair take? The typical turnaround at Repair.Dental is 3-7 business days, with priority handling available for urgent cases.
