Why Your Biolase Waterlase Laser Fires Intermittently (and What to Do About It)

An intermittent fault is the hardest kind to deal with. The laser works during a morning hygiene check, then cuts out mid-procedure with a patient in the chair. By the time a technician looks at it, everything seems fine.

If your Biolase laser fires intermittently, the cause is usually findable. The key is capturing the right details about when the problem happens. Whether you are seeing a Waterlase intermittent laser output problem or a general Biolase laser firing problem, you can request a free diagnostic evaluation before committing to any repair.

This guide explains what intermittent firing looks like, the most common causes, what to record, and how to get a fast fix without weeks of downtime.

What “Intermittent Firing” Really Means on a Waterlase

Intermittent firing means the laser does not deliver consistent output every time you press the foot pedal. It may fire normally for several minutes, then drop out, sputter, or refuse to fire until you reset it.

Clinics typically describe it in one of these ways:

The laser fires, then stops partway through a procedure
Output feels weaker on some activations than others
The system fires only after a restart or a second pedal press
A warning appears, clears, and returns later
The fault shows up only after the unit has been running for a while

Each pattern points toward a different part of the system. That is why a vague report like “it’s acting up” slows diagnosis, while a specific one speeds it up.

Common Causes of a Biolase Laser Firing Problem

For a Waterlase, Biolase laser repair technicians generally look at a handful of areas first. Any one of them can produce inconsistent output. The factory-trained team behind professional dental laser repair can usually narrow it down quickly once they have your symptom history.

Foot pedal or control faults. A worn pedal, loose connection, or failing switch can cause the laser to ignore some activations. This is one of the most common reasons for “sometimes it fires, sometimes it doesn’t.”

Fiber or delivery path issues. Misalignment, damage, or contamination in the fiber and handpiece path can cause weak or erratic output. Because it can depend on how the handpiece is positioned, this fault often appears and disappears.

Beam source or diode problems. A degrading beam source (diode degradation) may deliver inconsistent power, particularly as it warms up.

Overheating or cooling failures. If the cooling system is not keeping up, the unit may reduce output or stop firing once internal temperatures climb. This often matches a “works at first, fails later” pattern.

Power or battery issues. Unstable power delivery inside the system can interrupt firing without any obvious external sign.

Software and calibration errors. Calibration drift or software faults can trigger warnings and interrupt output even when the hardware is sound.

How to Document an Intermittent Fault

Intermittent problems are diagnosed by pattern. A few minutes of note-taking before you contact a technician can save days. Try to record:

When it happens: at startup, after a set run time, or during specific procedures
Which settings: power level, mode, tip type, and water or air settings in use
Warning messages: the exact text or code on the screen, and whether it clears on its own
What resets it: restart, pedal re-press, a cooldown period, or nothing
Pedal behavior: whether the fault changes if you reseat or swap the pedal connection
Environment: room temperature, recent moves, or power events such as outages or surges
Frequency: how often it happens per day or per week, and whether it is getting worse

A short log, or even phone photos of the error screen, gives a technician real evidence to work with. If you need a hand deciding what to capture, our WhatsApp technical support line (+1.510.990.0111) is free.

Don’t Guess: Get It Diagnosed

It is tempting to swap the pedal, reseat a cable, and hope. Sometimes that helps. But intermittent faults can mask a deeper issue, and repeated trial and error costs you chair time without confirming the cause.

If your laser has fired inconsistently more than once, talk to a laser repair expert before the problem gets worse. Diagnostics are free, and you will see transparent pricing before any repair begins.

Safety Note: When to Stop Using the Laser

If the laser is firing unpredictably, take it out of patient use until it has been evaluated. Unexpected output during a procedure is a patient-safety and liability concern, not just an inconvenience. Follow the guidance in your manufacturer’s operating manual for fault conditions, and do not attempt internal repairs yourself.

Repair or Replace: What an Intermittent Fault Usually Means

A fault that comes and goes does not automatically mean the laser is finished. Many intermittent output problems trace back to serviceable components such as the pedal, fiber path, cooling system, or calibration. Replacing an entire system because of a repairable fault is often the more expensive path.

Repair is typically the better option when the diagnosis points to a specific failing component. Replacement becomes worth discussing only when evaluation shows multiple major failures or a unit that can no longer be restored reliably. Repair.Dental’s free evaluation gives you the facts to decide.

Repair.Dental also services other laser brands, including AMD laser repair, Zolar laser repair, Solea laser repair, SIROLaser repair and Elexxion laser repair.

How Repair.Dental Handles It

When you are ready, start your repair with a shipping label.

Our work is backed by a 4.9 rating across 453 ratings shown on our site.

Preventing Repeat Problems

Once your laser is running reliably, a few habits reduce the odds of another intermittent fault:

Schedule regular maintenance, calibration and performance testing, ideally through a service plan
Handle and store fibers and handpieces carefully
Keep cooling vents clear and monitor the room temperature
Use surge protection and stable power
Report small warnings early instead of waiting for a failure

Frequently Asked Questions

Browse our repair FAQs for more, or start with these common questions about intermittent firing.

Why does my Biolase laser only fail sometimes?
Intermittent faults usually involve components that behave differently with heat, movement, or wear, such as the pedal, fiber path, cooling system, or beam source. That is why documenting when it happens is so useful.

Can I keep using the laser if it works most of the time?
We recommend pausing patient use until it is evaluated. Unpredictable output is a safety and liability concern.

What should I tell the technician?
Share when the fault occurs, which settings you were using, any warning messages, what clears it, and how often it happens. Photos of error screens help. You can also read about repairing your Biolase laser or reach out directly.

How much will the repair cost?
Cost depends on the issue found. The diagnostic evaluation is free, and you will see transparent pricing before any repair begins.

How long will I be without my laser?
Typical turnaround is 3 to 7 business days, with priority handling available for urgent repairs.

Can the work be done in my practice?
Small equipment ships to the Dentals National Repair Center, while large equipment can be repaired onsite.

Get Your Waterlase Firing Reliably Again

An intermittent fault will not fix itself, and every unpredictable activation puts chair time and patient confidence at risk. A free diagnostic evaluation is the fastest way to find the real cause and a clear price for fixing it.
