Some handpieces earn their keep quietly. The Bien-Air Boralina is one of them: a Swiss-made air turbine that sits in operatories, hygiene bays, and backup drawers, doing its job cycle after cycle until the day it does not. Then the questions start. Is it the turbine or the air supply? Repair or replace? Can we fix it in-house?

This guide answers those questions in plain language. It is built on Bien-Air's Boralina product page and on the Instructions for Use that cover the Bora, Prestige, and Boralina turbines, and it flags the places where those documents differ, because a repair decision deserves accurate numbers.

A turbine that feels tired is not always a turbine that is finished. The trick is knowing which is which.

Meet the Boralina: Bien-Air's Value-Line Swiss Turbine

Bien-Air lists the Boralina (reference 1600373-001) in its Basic air-driven line, alongside the Black Pearl Eco. It has no light, a single water spray, a swivel and a Unifix quick-connect coupling. Bien-Air describes the pair as Swiss-made quality at a value that defies all logic, aimed at clinics that want dependable high-speed performance without premium extras.

It also carries real heritage. Bien-Air says it invented the first reliable air-driven handpiece in 1959 and went on to introduce the push-button bur-change mechanism, air-bearing technology, and the first quick-connect coupling.

Specification	Boralina (REF 1600373-001), per Bien-Air product page
Light	None (non-optic)
Spray	Single water spray; spray outlet listed as 2 x 1 separate
Power	12 W
Rotation speed	310,000 rpm
Noise level	62 dBA
Head diameter/size	12 mm / 14.5 mm (22.5 mm with a 19 mm bur)
Weight	61 g
Coupling	Unifix (4-way)
Bur chuck (per IFU)	1.60 mm shaft, type 3 (ISO 1797-1); maximum bur length 21 mm, code 4 to 5 (ISO 6360-1), maximum working diameter 2 mm
Supply air pressure (per IFU)	2.5 to 2.7 bar, set with the Bien-Air pressure gauge

Before the repair map, four assumptions we hear about the Boralina

Common belief	What Bien-Air's documents say
"Basic line means disposable."	Bien-Air recommends checking or servicing dynamic devices every three years, and its IFU sets out a full care routine. It is designed to be maintained.
"A weak turbine is a dead turbine."	Bien-Air specifies 2.5 to 2.7 bar supply air pressure. A wrong setting can mimic a failing turbine.
"No light means something is broken."	The Boralina is listed without light. It is a non-optic turbine by design.
"All the numbers online agree."	Bien-Air's own product page and IFU differ on some figures, which is why you should check your unit's label and paperwork.

The Repair Map: What Really Goes Wrong Inside a Boralina Turbine

Air turbines fail in a small number of predictable ways. Use this table to describe your problem accurately, then decide who should look at it.

Symptom	Often behind it	Usual path
Slow start, weak cutting	Wrong supply air pressure, blocked filter or hose, or worn turbine	Check pressure with a gauge first; service if pressure is correct
Grinding, whine or rumble	Bearing wear or rotor imbalance	Stop and send for service
Bur slips or will not release	Worn or contaminated chuck and push-button mechanism	Chuck service
Weak or no water spray	Blocked spray tube or outlet, hard-water scale, low supply	Clear per IFU; service if persistent
Air or water leaking at the coupling	Worn seals or a poorly seated connection	Reseat, test on another coupling, then service
Heat at the head	Lubrication lapse, bearing wear or coolant failure	Stop immediately; service
Vibration	Bent or worn bur, or a damaged rotor	Fresh bur test; then service
After a drop	Bent head, damaged rotor or bearings	Inspection before use

Four Wear Zones: Chuck, Rotor, Spray Path and Coupling Interface

The chuck and push-button. Bien-Air describes an anti-heat push-button bur-changing mechanism. The IFU warns never to press it while the turbine is rotating, because it can overheat. Wear here shows as slipping or a stiff button.
The rotor and bearings. Spinning at around 310,000 rpm, they are the hardest-working parts. Lubrication lapses show up here first as noise and heat.
The spray path. With a single water spray, cooling depends on one clear route. Bien-Air supplies a cleaning wire for the spray tubes, and warns that unfiltered hard water accelerates blockage of hoses, couplings and diffusers.
The coupling interface. The Boralina connects to a Unifix rotating quick-connect coupling. Bien-Air states the Unifix coupling cannot be sterilised, so it is worth inspecting separately.

The Two-Minute Test to Run Before Any Repair Decision: Check the Air

Here is the most useful thing in the whole IFU for anyone facing a "weak turbine". Bien-Air specifies the supply air pressure for the Boralina as 2.5 to 2.7 bar, measured with Bien-Air's pressure gauge (REF 1600243-001, a gauge for 4-hole attachments). A turbine running at the wrong pressure can look faulty when it is not.

The manufacturer's setup sequence is simple:

Connect the pressure gauge to the hose and screw it in fully.
Connect the coupling (Unifix) to the gauge and screw it in fully.
Insert the turbine onto the coupling and check that it is seated by moving it back and forth.
Adjust the air pressure to the specified range with the gauge in place.
To remove the turbine, press the two push-buttons on the coupling and pull it off at the same time.

Three turbines in one clinic all feel sluggish on the same Monday. Do you send three handpieces away, or check the one thing they share? A quick look at the compressor and a gauge reading at the coupling can settle the question in minutes.

Bien-Air also stresses dry, purified compressed air and regular maintenance of the compressor and filtration systems. If several handpieces in the practice feel weak, the cause may sit upstream of the turbines.

The Three-Year Checkup: Bien-Air's Servicing Recommendation

Bien-Air recommends that users have their dynamic devices checked or serviced every three years. For a turbine, that interval makes sense: bearings, seals and chuck parts wear with use, whether or not you have noticed a problem.

Put a date on it. Record the purchase date and note when the third year arrives.
Stagger the fleet. If you own several turbines, service them in rotation so the operatories are never all short at once.
Service before the fault. A planned check costs less disruption than an emergency.

Behind the Bench: Inside a Professional Turbine Service

Repair.Dental describes a four-step process, and here is what the bench work behind those steps typically covers:

Submit request. Use the Print Shipping Label page or contact the team, and provide the reference, coupling type, and symptom.
Ship the device. Clean and sterilize it first. Include your invoice details if the unit may still be covered.
Repair and test. The technician inspects the chuck, push-button, spray path, and rotor; identifies the cause; replaces worn components; then tests rotation, noise, spray, and bur retention.
Return delivery. The turbine returns with the outcome documented.

Repair, Replace or Rent? A Decision Framework

Situation	Lean toward	Reasoning
First failure, body in good shape	Repair	A targeted repair restores a sound handpiece
Approaching three years	Preventive service	This is Bien-Air's own recommended interval
Inside the warranty period	Supplier or Bien-Air first	Third-party work can affect warranty
Dropped or dented	Assessment first	Hidden bearing or rotor damage is common
Chair time is tight	Repair plus a loaner	Downtime outweighs the repair itself

Warranty Notes and Paperwork: Protect Your Options

Bien-Air's IFU grants a 24-month warranty from the invoice date for operating faults and material or manufacturing defects.
Claims require the invoice or delivery note showing the purchase date, product reference, and serial number.
Excluded: excessive wear, improper use, failure to follow maintenance instructions, unusual chemical or electrical influences, and faulty air, water, or electrical connections.
The warranty is void if damage results from incorrect servicing or modification by third parties not authorized by Bien-Air.

Straight Answers: Boralina Repair FAQs Before You Ship

Can a Bien-Air Boralina be repaired?

Yes. A bench inspection confirms the cause and the condition of the head and rotor. Because the IFU recommends servicing dynamic devices every three years, professional service is part of the expected life of the instrument.

Does the Boralina have a light?

No. Bien-Air lists it as a non-light handpiece. If you need illumination, that is a different model, not a fault in your Boralina.

What air pressure should my Boralina run at?

Bien-Air's IFU specifies 2.5 to 2.7 bar, adjusted with the Bien-Air pressure gauge. Check this before assuming the turbine has failed.
