Turbines are honest. They do not fail politely: they get louder, slower, hotter, or wetter first. The Bien-Air Boralina is no exception, and the people best placed to notice are the ones holding it every day.

This guide turns those small signals into decisions. Every safety statement rests on Bien-Air's Instructions for Use for the Bora, Prestige and Boralina turbines (linked at the end), and every check is something a trained chairside team member can do without opening the handpiece.

BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE

Bien-Air's IFU says to suspend work immediately with irregular operation, excessive vibration, or abnormal heating, and to contact a repair centre approved by Bien-Air
Never run the turbine without a bur in the chuck
Never press the push-button while the turbine is rotating, because it can overheat and cause burns
The Boralina has no light, so a dark head is normal, not a fault

Listen, Feel, Look: Five Signals Your Turbine Sends Before It Fails

Sound. A whine that rises in pitch, a rumble, or a rattle that was not there last week.
Feel. Vibration in the fingertips, or a head that warms faster than usual.
Look. Thin, uneven, or missing water spray, or a bur that sits at a different angle.
Performance. A slow start, or a turbine that stalls with pressure it handled easily before.
Behavior. A bur that will not lock, will not release, or spins loose.

One signal deserves a note. If you expected a light, remember the Boralina is a non-optic turbine: Bien-Air lists it without light, with a single water spray and a Unifix coupling. If you need illumination, that is a different model.

TYPICAL SCENARIO: THE DARK BORALINA

A new assistant reports that the Boralina "has no light" and wants it sent for repair. The instrument is working exactly as designed: Bien-Air lists it as a non-optic turbine with a single water spray. Knowing what your model does not have saves shipping time.

Start Here: The 60-Second Triage Table

Symptom	First safe check (turbine disconnected, bur stopped)	Next step
Slow, weak, or stalls	Check supply pressure with a gauge. Bien-Air specifies 2.5 to 2.7 bar.	If pressure is correct, service
No or weak spray	Check water is on and filtered; look for a blocked outlet; use the Bien-Air cleaning wire as directed	If unchanged, stop and service
Bur slips or wobbles	Fit a new, compliant bur (1.60 mm shaft) fully home	If it still slips, chuck service
Bur will not release	Press the push-button firmly and pull; do not force with tools	Stop and send for service
Noise or vibration	Change the bur; try the turbine on another coupling	Stop and send for service
Hot head	Stop immediately. Let it cool.	Do not use it again until inspected
Leaking at the coupling	Reseat the turbine; check it moves back and forth when seated	Test on another coupling; then service

Slow Start and Weak Power: Rule Out the Air Supply First

When a turbine feels weak, the instinct is to blame the handpiece. Bien-Air's IFU suggests looking upstream first, because it specifies the supply air pressure precisely: 2.5 to 2.7 bar for the Boralina, set with the Bien-Air pressure gauge (REF 1600243-001).

Cause	Try this	Not that	Send it if
Pressure outside the range	Fit the gauge between the hose and coupling and adjust to 2.5 to 2.7 bar	Guessing at the regulator	Pressure is right, and power is still weak
Poor air quality	Check compressor drying and filtration; Bien-Air asks for dry, purified air	Ignoring moisture in the lines	Several handpieces show the same fault
Turbine not seated	Insert on the coupling and check it moves back and forth when correctly seated	Forcing a mismatched coupling	A seated turbine still leaks or drags
Worn rotor or bearings	Confirm with the swap test (below)	Continuing to use it	The fault follows the turbine to another coupling

Water Spray Failures: A Single Route Means a Single Point of Failure

The Boralina's cooling relies on one water spray. When it thins or stops, heat rises quickly, so this is a stop-first, ask-later symptom.

Cause	Try this	Not that	Send it if
Blocked spray tube	Clear it with the Bien-Air cleaning wire as part of preliminary cleaning	Pins, needles, or improvised tools	The wire does not restore an even mist
Hard-water scale	Check filtration; Bien-Air warns that unfiltered hard water blocks hoses, couplings, and diffusers	Running unfiltered water	Scale returns quickly after cleaning
Low supply	Check the unit's water supply and settings. Bien-Air lists spray water pressure of 200 kPa for the turbine.	Working without adequate coolant	Supply is correct, mist is still weak

Bien-Air's IFU also states that spray outlets must never be obstructed, and that these turbines must not be used where open lesions or damaged soft tissue are present, or after a recent extraction, because the air current could propel infected material into the wound.

Bur Drama: Slipping, Sticking and Refusing to Seat

The chuck is the part of a turbine that clinicians touch most, so its faults get noticed first. Bien-Air specifies a bur tip (shank) diameter of 1.60 mm, type 3 per ISO 1797-1, with a maximum bur length of 21 mm (code 4 to 5 per ISO 6360-1) and a maximum working diameter of 2 mm.

Cause	Try this	Not that	Send it if
Non-compliant or worn bur	Fit a new bur that matches the specification	Using a bur with a damaged shank	A new compliant bur still slips
Bur not fully locked	Press the button, insert until it locks, release, then gently push and pull to check	Partially inserting to gain reach	The bur will not lock or turn freely
Residue in the chuck	Clean and lubricate per the IFU, bur out	Forcing the push-button	The button stays stiff after cleaning

Bien-Air is direct here: always check the bur is in place and rotates freely, and if it does not, contact your usual supplier or Bien-Air for repair.

Noise, Whine and Vibration: What Each Sound Is Telling You

High whine that rises over time. Often bearing wear. Stop and book service.
Low rumble or grind. Can mean rotor imbalance or contamination.
Rattle. Check the bur is compliant and locked before anything else.
Vibration through the fingers. A bent or worn bur is the cheapest suspect, so change it first.

Heat: When "Warm" Becomes Dangerous

Four beliefs that keep hot turbines in use longer than they should be:

Common belief	What Bien-Air's documents say
"It is just warm from a long procedure."	Bien-Air lists abnormal heating among the signs that mean work must be suspended immediately.
"The spray is a bit thin but fine."	With a single water spray, cooling depends on one route. Weak spray is a stop-first symptom.
"I will press the button to reseat the bur while it spins."	The push-button must not be pressed while the turbine is rotating; it can overheat and cause burns.
"It has been fine for years, so it will keep going."	Bien-Air recommends a check or service every three years, precisely because wear is gradual.

TAKE IT OUT OF SERVICE IF YOU SEE ANY OF THESE

Abnormal heating of the head or push-button
Weak, uneven or absent water spray
Excessive vibration or unusual noise that persists with a new bur
A bur that will not lock or turn freely
Irregular operation that you cannot explain by supply or setup
Any drop or impact that visibly damages the head

Heat has three common origins: lapsed lubrication, coolant failure, and mechanical wear. Bien-Air also warns that soft tissue (tongue, cheek, lips) must be protected with a retractor or mirror, and that the push-button must not be pressed accidentally while spinning. Any of these can cause burns.

After a heat event, do not simply let the turbine cool and go back to work. Log it, and send it for inspection if a fresh bur and correct pressure and spray do not explain it.

Leaks and Coupling Problems: The Swap Test and the Escalation Ladder

The Boralina connects to a Unifix rotating quick-connect coupling (4-way). To remove it, press the two push-buttons on the coupling and pull the turbine off at the same time. A leak or drag at this interface can come from the coupling, the hose, or the turbine.

Reseat the turbine and confirm it moves back and forth when correctly connected.
Swap the coupling. Try the turbine on a known-good coupling.
Swap the turbine. Try a known-good turbine on your original coupling.
Read the result. If the fault follows the turbine, it is the turbine. If it stays with the coupling or hose, look there.

Level	Who	What happens
1	Chairside team	Stop, run the safe checks and the swap test, and note the result
2	Supplier or Bien-Air	If the unit is within warranty, start here with invoice, reference, and serial number
3	Specialist repair	For out-of-warranty turbines, send for bench inspection and repair
4	Retirement	If repair is uneconomic, return it sterilised to your dealer for recycling

Quick Answers: Boralina Troubleshooting FAQs

Why is my Boralina spinning slowly?

Check the supply air pressure first. Bien-Air specifies 2.5 to 2.7 bar, set with its pressure gauge. If the pressure is right and the turbine is still slow, bearing or rotor wear is likely, and it should be serviced.

Why is there no water spray?

Look for a blocked spray tube or outlet, low water supply, or hard-water scale. Bien-Air supplies a cleaning wire for the spray tubes. If the mist stays weak after correct supply and cleaning, stop using the turbine.

My Boralina has no light. Is it broken?

No. Bien-Air lists the Boralina without a light. Light is a feature of other models.
