Some contra-angles turn a bur slowly and carefully. The CA 1:2.5 does the opposite on purpose: it takes a motor's speed and multiplies it 2.5 times over, turning burs up to 100,000 rpm for the fast, high-torque cutting that apicectomies, hemisections, crown lengthening, and wisdom tooth extraction demand.

That kind of speed multiplication puts real stress on a small mechanism, and Bien-Air designed the CA 1:2.5 with that in mind: a stainless-steel body for corrosion resistance, multi-strand optical glass lighting, and a maintenance routine with two extra steps that do not appear on some of its sibling instruments. This guide walks through what tends to wear, what a professional service involves, and one detail worth checking before you order parts.

A speed-multiplying contra-angle turns motor speed into surgical torque. Anything that wears in that chain shows up as lost performance exactly when a procedure needs it most.

Meet the CA 1:2.5: A Speed Multiplier Built for Surgery and Periodontology

Bien-Air's Instructions for Use classify the CA 1:2.5 as a contra-angle handpiece with a speed multiplier ratio, light and external irrigation, intended for implantology, periodontology, and dental surgery work. A red instrument sleeve marks the 2.5x multiplier at a glance, taking a drive speed of up to 40,000 rpm at the motor and turning it into a speed of rotation up to 100,000 rpm at the bur.

Bien-Air also markets a redesigned version of the CA 1:2.5 built around latch-type burs, compatible with extra-long 34 mm surgical burs, which the manufacturer positions as a new benchmark for surgery and periodontology, with durability it says is more than doubled compared with earlier configurations. If your instrument uses that latch-type system, confirm your exact reference and bur specification with your supplier, since it differs from the push-button, shorter-bur configuration detailed in Bien-Air's published Instructions for Use for the CA 1:2.5L MS.

A Safety Detail Unique to This Instrument: No Pressurized Cooling Air

STRAIGHT FROM BIEN-AIR'S INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

The CA 1:2.5 "must not receive pressurized cooling air from the unit, in order to prevent contamination of the wound."
This caution reflects the instrument's surgical use case: forcing air into a surgical site carries a real risk of driving contaminated material into tissue, distinct from the cooling requirements of a routine restorative procedure

The Repair Map: What Actually Goes Wrong on a CA 1:2.5

COMMON FAILURE PATTERNS AND WHERE TO START

Cutting feels weaker at speed. Given the 2.5x multiplier, small amounts of drive wear are magnified at the bur; confirm motor settings first, then consider bench inspection
Bur will not seat, lock, or rotate loosely. Check that the bur meets the 1.60 mm, ISO 1797-1 type 3 specification with a maximum length of 21 mm before assuming a chuck fault
Weak or blocked spray at the nozzles. This instrument's nozzles need direct wire-cleaning as part of routine maintenance; a skipped step here is a common, fixable cause
Noise, grinding, or vibration. Points toward wear in the multiplying drive mechanism; stop and arrange inspection
Light dims or disappears. Confirm the motor and coupling both supply light before assuming the multi-strand optical glass has failed

Why the Nozzles Deserve Special Attention on This Instrument

Bien-Air's maintenance procedure for contra-angles and handpieces used in surgery and implantology includes two steps explicitly marked as applying only to the CA 1:2.5, not to its siblings in the same family: external pre-disinfection before cleaning, and removing dirt and deposits from the nozzles using the Bien-Air cleaning wire. Those steps exist because this instrument's spray path is more exposed to blockage than some of the other surgical contra-angles Bien-Air makes.

Do not skip the wire-cleaning step even when a quick rinse looks sufficient; deposits inside the nozzle are not always visible.
Dry with compressed air first, then dry the rest of the instrument with a cloth, exactly as the manufacturer specifies.
Treat a persistently weak spray as a maintenance-history question first, before assuming a mechanical fault.

Inside a Professional CA 1:2.5 Service

Repair. Dental describes a four-step repair process. On a CA 1:2.5, the bench work behind those steps typically covers:

Submit request. Use the shipping label page and note your exact reference and whether your unit uses the push-button or latch-type bur system.
Ship the device. Clean and sterilize it first, and describe whether the fault shows up at high speed, at startup, or constantly.
Repair and test. The technician inspects the drive and multiplying mechanism, the bur chuck, the nozzles, and, where fitted, the optical light path, then tests speed, noise, spray, and bur retention.
Return delivery. The instrument comes back with the findings documented.

Repair, Replace, or Check Which Generation You Have?

Confirm your exact reference before ordering parts. The push-button CA 1:2.5L MS and the redesigned latch-type CA 1:2.5 use different bur specifications, and parts are not interchangeable between them.
Still under warranty? Given the discrepancy between Bien-Air's documented warranty lengths, check your invoice date against both the 1-year and 24-month figures before assuming coverage has lapsed.
First fault, otherwise sound? A targeted repair to the drive or chuck mechanism is usually the right call for a stainless-steel instrument built for repeated surgical use.
Cannot afford downtime? Repair.Dental offers dental handpiece rental services so a repair does not stall a surgical schedule.

When to Escalate: Signs a CA 1:2.5 Needs More Than a Quick Fix

STOP AND ARRANGE SERVICE IF YOU SEE ANY OF THESE

Cutting power that stays reduced at full speed after confirming motor settings and bur compliance
Spray that remains weak or blocked after nozzle wire-cleaning
Any grinding, rattling, or new vibration during use
Light that stays dim or absent after confirming the motor and coupling both supply light
Any drop, impact, or visible damage to the head

What Surgical Teams Say After a CA 1:2.5 Repair

★★★★★

“Our CA 1:2.5 had gone quieter but noticeably weaker at full speed. Turned out to be exactly the kind of drive wear you'd expect on a 2.5x multiplier after years of surgical use. Repaired properly, it's back to full torque.”

— Oral Surgeon

★★★★★

“The team caught the reference number mismatch before ordering parts, which saved us a wasted shipment entirely.”

— Practice Manager, periodontics clinic

★★★★★

“Clear questions about our bur system before diagnosing anything told us they actually understood this handpiece isn't one-size-fits-all.”

— Dental Assistant

CA 1:2.5 Repair FAQs: Straight Answers Before You Ship

Can a Bien-Air CA 1:2.5 be repaired?

Yes. A bench inspection confirms whether the cause is drive wear, a chuck issue, or a blocked spray path, and most faults on this stainless-steel instrument are repairable rather than requiring replacement.

What is the maximum speed of the CA 1:2.5?

Bien-Air's Instructions for Use list a maximum speed of rotation of 100,000 rpm, driven by a motor speed of up to 40,000 rpm through the instrument's 2.5x multiplying ratio.
