An Engineered Number, Not a Guarantee

Bien-Air states the NOVA line offers double the service life of its previous generation, thanks largely to its stainless-steel build and Cylkro gear design. That figure describes what the engineering makes possible, not what happens automatically regardless of how the instrument is treated. A NOVA 1:1 reprocessed casually will fall well short of it. This guide is really just the detail behind closing that gap.

Same-Day Basics

Right After the Patient Leaves the Chair

Disconnect the handpiece from its motor

Remove the bur, leaving the chuck released rather than clamped shut on nothing

Begin cleaning promptly rather than letting residue sit and dry

Before It Goes Back Into Rotation

Complete the full clean, disinfect, lubricate, and sterilize cycle, not a partial version of it

Confirm the chuck locks a test bur securely before returning the handpiece to your tray setup

Cleaning: Manual or Automated

Bien-Air's contra-angle line supports two validated cleaning paths, and which one fits your practice depends mostly on what equipment you already have.

Manual Cleaning

Clean under running water below 38°C (100°F).

Use a soft brush to remove visible debris from external surfaces and accessible openings.

Spray internally and externally with Spraynet, holding the tip downward and protecting the connection point with an absorbent cloth.

Dry thoroughly before moving on to disinfection.

Automated Cleaning-Disinfection

Devices marked with the washer-disinfector pictogram can go through an automated cycle instead, following the washer-disinfector and detergent manufacturer's own validated parameters. This is generally the more consistent option for practices processing a higher daily volume of instruments.

Lubrication: The Twice-a-Day Rule

Lubricate with Lubrifluid before every sterilization cycle, and at least twice a day regardless of patient volume.

	Remove the bur.

Insert the Lubrifluid nozzle into the back of the instrument.

Spray for approximately 1 to 2 seconds, holding the tip downward over an absorbent cloth.

Run the handpiece briefly with a bur inserted to clear surplus lubricant before sterilizing.

Why this specific rule matters for the NOVA 1:1

Skipping the twice-daily minimum is one of the more common ways practices quietly undercut the NOVA's engineered lifespan.

The Anti-Retraction Valve Deserves Its Own Mention

The NOVA 1:1 includes a sterilizable anti-retraction valve, designed to minimize backflow of fluids from the oral cavity into the dental unit's hoses. It goes through the same reprocessing cycle as the rest of the handpiece rather than a separate routine, but because it's a hygiene-critical component, give it a specific visual check during cleaning rather than assuming it's fine simply because the rest of the handpiece looks normal.

Storage and Extended Downtime

Store in a dry, dust-free environment between uses

Before returning a NOVA 1:1 to service after an extended period of disuse, run it through a full clean-disinfect-lubricate-sterilize cycle rather than assuming it's still ready

Check the chuck and push-button function after any extended storage period, since seals and lubricant residue can behave differently after sitting unused

A Short List of Avoidable Mistakes

Skipping the twice-daily lubrication minimum on quieter days

	Using an ultrasonic cleaner

Sterilizing an instrument that hasn't been properly cleaned and dried first

Leaving the handpiece in the sterilizer after the cycle finishes

Treating the anti-retraction valve as maintenance-free because it's sterilizable

Assuming a handpiece that's been in storage for weeks is ready to use without reprocessing

What Actually Extends the Lifespan Here

Two things matter more than anything else for a NOVA 1:1 specifically: hitting the twice-daily lubrication minimum without exception, and giving the anti-retraction valve and chuck a genuine visual check at every cycle rather than a cursory glance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to lubricate a NOVA 1:1 differently than a NOVA 1:5?

The core lubrication method with Lubrifluid is the same across Bien-Air's range, though always confirm the correct nozzle attachment for your specific model before applying it.

Can I run the NOVA 1:1 through our washer-disinfector along with turbines?

Only if the specific NOVA 1:1 unit is marked with the washer-disinfector pictogram. Check this before assuming compatibility, since not every configuration supports the automated cycle.
