A straight handpiece that sections bone lives a rougher life than a restorative contra-angle. Bone dust, sustained pressure, saline irrigation and constant sterilization cycles are simply part of the job. The PM 1:2 is engineered around that reality, but the routine that keeps it reliable deserves the same care as the surgery it supports.

This playbook follows Bien-Air's official maintenance procedure for contra-angles and handpieces used in surgery and implantology, the same documentation family that covers the CA 20:1 and CA 1:2.5. Two steps in that procedure, marked "only for CA 1:2.5" in Bien-Air's own instructions, do not apply to the PM 1:2; this guide flags exactly where that distinction matters.

The single-use bur guard and disposable tubing already do half the maintenance work. The routine below does the rest.

Two Steps That Do Not Apply to the PM 1:2

Bien-Air publishes one maintenance procedure covering its family of surgery and implantology contra-angles and handpieces, including the CA 20:1, CA 1:2.5, and the PM 1:2. Reading it carefully matters, because two specific steps are marked as applying only to the CA 1:2.5, not the PM 1:2:

External pre-disinfection before cleaning. Listed as "only for CA 1:2.5" in Bien-Air's procedure.
Removing dirt and deposits from the nozzles with the cleaning wire. Also marked "only for CA 1:2.5."

For the PM 1:2, the routine begins directly with removing the rotary instrument and disconnecting it from the motor, then moves straight into cleaning under running water. Applying steps meant for a different instrument is a common, easy-to-make mistake, and it wastes time without adding protection.

The Core Care Cycle: Preparation Through Sterilization

Remove the instrument. Take the rotary tool out of the chuck mechanism, then disconnect the handpiece from the motor.
Clean under running water below 38°C.
Clean internally with Aquacare. Shake the canister. With attachment 1, tip pointing down and protected with an absorbent cloth, press the button for 2 seconds. Switch to attachment 3 and press for 1 second.
Clean internally and externally with Spraynet. Shake the canister, use the Spraynet attachment, tip pointing down and protected, press for 1 second, then wipe the exterior with a Spraynet-soaked cloth.
Disinfect using a surface disinfectant per its own instructions, or a thermal disinfection cycle. Do not immerse the instrument in a disinfectant bath.
Lubricate with Lubrifluid. Shake the canister, tip down and protected, press for 1 second. Run a 30-second low-speed operating test to clear surplus lubricant, then store the instrument tip-down immediately.
Sterilize. Bag the instrument and sterilize per the sterilizer manufacturer's instructions. Only instruments bearing the 135°C symbol can go in an autoclave, and only instruments that have already been cleaned and lubricated should be sterilized.

The Tubing and Bur Guard: Your First Line of Defense

Before the cleaning routine even starts, two single-use components have already done real protective work. The external irrigation system uses sterile disposable tubing, replaced with every use, and the bur guard prevents fluid infiltration into both the shank and the motor. Treat both as part of the maintenance routine, not as accessories separate from it.

Confirm a fresh tube for every procedure. This is a hygiene requirement first and a reliability safeguard second.
Fit a new bur guard every time. Reusing one removes the protection it is designed to provide.
Check both before the case, not after. A missing tube or guard is far easier to fix before a procedure than to diagnose afterward.

The Ban List: What Never Touches a PM 1:2

Remove the rotary instrument and disconnect from the motor first
Clean under running water below 38°C
Use Aquacare, then Spraynet, in that order
Run 30 seconds at low speed after lubricating
Store the instrument tip-down immediately after lubrication
Use a fresh tube and bur guard every procedure

DON'T

Immerse in a disinfectant bath
Use an ultrasonic cleaner
Apply CA 1:2.5-only steps meant for a different instrument
Sterilize an unlubricated instrument
Reuse a single-use bur guard or tubing
Skip the 30-second post-lubrication test run

Lubrication and the 30-Second Run: Why the Order Matters

Bien-Air's procedure calls for a 30-second low-speed test run immediately after applying Lubrifluid, specifically to clear surplus lubricant before the instrument is stored or used again. On a surgical instrument, this is not a cosmetic step. Any leftover lubricant that is not expelled before use could otherwise reach the surgical site.

Store the instrument tip-down right after this step, so any remaining oil residue drains rather than pooling inside the head.

Sterilization: Only for What Is Already Clean

Bien-Air's rule is direct: only sterilize instruments that have already been cleaned and lubricated. Bag the PM 1:2 and follow the sterilizer manufacturer's instructions, confirming the instrument carries the 135°C autoclave symbol before running the cycle.

If a sterilizer is temporarily unavailable, cycles cannot simply be skipped for a surgical schedule. Repair.Dental lists sterilization equipment rental services for exactly that situation.

Your Maintenance Toolkit: What to Keep in Stock

Aquacare (internal cleaning spray for surgery and implantology handpieces)
Spraynet (internal and external cleaning spray)
Lubrifluid (spray lubricant)
Sterile disposable irrigation tubing (single-use, replaced every procedure)
Single-use bur guards (replaced every procedure, never reused)

Bien-Air also offers the Lubricare 2 system for automated cleaning and lubrication across a fleet of handpieces, worth considering for practices running a high volume of surgical cases.

A Daily, Weekly and Monthly Rhythm for Surgical Handpieces

Bien-Air specifies the per-use routine above. The weekly and monthly items below are a practical clinic schedule built around that routine.

After every procedure. Full cycle: remove instrument, clean, Aquacare, Spraynet, disinfect, lubricate, run 30 seconds, sterilize.
End of day. Confirm every PM 1:2 used that day has been stored tip-down, and stock of tubing, bur guards, Aquacare, and Spraynet is sufficient for tomorrow.
Weekly (suggested). Check irrigation flow is even. Confirm the chuck mechanism feels smooth.
Monthly (suggested). Review consumable stock across the whole surgical maintenance kit and log approximate use per handpiece.

What Surgical Teams Say About the PM 1:2 Care Routine

★★★★★

“Learning that two of the maintenance steps in the manual were CA 1:2.5-only saved our team from applying an unnecessary extra step every single case.”

— Oral Surgery Assistant

★★★★★

“Treating the bur guard and tubing as consumables rather than optional extras changed our whole approach to setup.”

— Surgical Coordinator, oral maxillofacial clinic

★★★★★

“The 30-second run detail after lubricating is small, but skipping it used to leave a faint oily residue we never quite placed. Now we know why.”

— Practice Manager

PM 1:2 Maintenance FAQs: What Surgical Teams Ask Most

Do the CA 1:2.5-only steps apply to my PM 1:2?

No. Bien-Air's procedure explicitly marks external pre-disinfection and cleaning-wire deposit removal as applying only to the CA 1:2.5. Start the PM 1:2 routine directly with cleaning under running water.

Can I reuse the bur guard to save cost?

No. It is a single-use component that Bien-Air specifically designs to prevent fluid infiltration into the shank and motor. Reusing it removes that protection.
