Much of a handpiece's fate is decided not during the procedure but in the minutes after the appointment. That is when blood, saliva, and debris start to dry, and when a routine either protects your investment or quietly wears it down.

Good news: caring for a Bien-Air CA PRIMA 1:1 is not complicated. It is a short, repeatable sequence, and Bien-Air has written it down in the instrument's Instructions for Use. This guide turns that document into a practical playbook for real clinics, with a printable checklist, a do-and-don't board, and answers to the questions teams ask most.

Sterilization protects the patient. Maintenance protects the handpiece. You need both, every single time.

30 min

to clean and disinfect after treatment

1 sec

Lubrifluid spray per lubrication

QUICK FACTS TO PIN ABOVE THE SINK

Clean and disinfect within 30 minutes of every treatment
Lubricate before every sterilization, and at least twice a day
Never use an ultrasonic cleaner, saline soak, or wire brush
Bur out for cleaning and sterilization, every time
Dynamic air-removal steam cycles only, no gravity displacement

The 30-Minute Clock: Your Six-Step Care Cycle Starts Now

Bien-Air's IFU says the handpiece must be cleaned and disinfected within a maximum of 30 minutes after each treatment. The reasoning is mechanical, not cosmetic: prompt cleaning removes blood, saliva, and residues before they can block the transmission system. Bien-Air USA repeats the same 30-minute guidance in its official contra-angle maintenance guide.

Here is the full cycle at a glance, in the order the manufacturer describes it:

Step	What you do	The detail that matters
1	Prepare	Disconnect from the motor and remove the bur. On external-spray versions, remove the irrigation line too.
2	Preliminary cleaning	Rinse the exterior and interior under tap water (15–38°C) if it meets the pH and chloride limits; otherwise, use demineralized water.
3	Disinfection	Bath in a suitable disinfectant, brush with a soft brush, rinse twice, spray inside with Spraynet, and dry the exterior.
4	Lubrication	Lubrifluid only. Nozzle at the rear of the handle, one-second spray, wipe off the excess.
5	Sterilization	Bag it, run a dynamic air-removal steam cycle, dry it, and remove it from the sterilizer promptly.
6	Storage	Keep it in the sealed pouch in a dry, dust-free place, and re-process if the pouch is compromised.

The device ships non-sterile. Bien-Air requires cleaning, drying, lubrication, and sterilization before first use, so build the routine on day one, not after the first fault.

Cleaning Without Regrets: Water Quality, Soft Brushes and Disinfectant Baths

Cleaning is where most well-meaning teams go wrong, usually by reaching for a tool the manufacturer specifically warns against. Here is the approved approach, with the reasons behind it.

Use the right water. Tap water is fine only if its pH is between 6.5 and 8.5 and chloride is below 100 mg/l. Otherwise, use demineralized (deionized) water for rinsing.
Skip the saline. Do not submerge the handpiece in physiological liquid (NaCl) or use saline to keep it moist until you can clean it. After surgical use with external irrigation, Bien-Air points to its Aquacare spray to remove NaCl deposits as soon as possible.
Manual or washer-disinfector only. Bien-Air states not to use an ultrasonic cleaner.
Choose compatible chemistry. The IFU lists alkaline detergents or detergent-disinfectants (pH 8 to 11) and disinfectants based on didecyldimethylammonium chloride, quaternary ammonium carbonate, or neutral enzymatic products. Neodisher Mediclean is named as an example.
Brush gently. Use a smooth, flexible brush, for example a soft-bristled toothbrush. Never use a wire brush.
Rinse twice under running water at 15–38°C, then spray inside with Spraynet and dry the exterior with sterile, low-linting non-woven compresses.

Using a washer-disinfector

If your clinic uses an ISO 15883-1 washer-disinfector, Bien-Air lists these recommended thermo-disinfection parameters:

Phase	Recommended parameters
Pre-cleaning	Below 45°C, at least 2 minutes
Cleaning	45–55°C for enzymatic detergents, 45–65°C for alkaline detergents, at least 5 minutes
Neutralization	At least 2 minutes
Rinsing	Tap water at 30°C or below, at least 2 minutes
Thermal disinfection	Demineralized water at 90–95°C, 5–10 minutes
Drying	18–22 minutes

One more caution from the IFU: never rinse devices to cool them after a hot cycle.

One Second That Saves Your Bearings: Lubrication Done Right

If cleaning is about removing what should not be there, lubrication is about putting back what must be. Bien-Air's guidance is unusually specific, and following it exactly is the cheapest way to protect the bearings and drive.

Check cleanliness first. Inspect the handpiece visually and repeat cleaning if needed. Oil on top of debris just makes a paste.
Lay it on a sterile, non-woven cloth to catch excess lubricant.
Select the correct nozzle and insert the Lubrifluid nozzle into the rear of the handle.
Spray for 1 second. Then wipe excess oil from the exterior with a sterile non-woven compress.

How often? Lubricate before each sterilization or at least twice a day. Only Lubrifluid should be used according to the IFU, and Bien-Air also warns that other products or parts may cause faults and can void the guarantee.

Automating with Lubricare 2

Busy practices sometimes prefer an automatic system. Bien-Air's Lubricare 2 maintenance device can process up to four handpieces at once, taking roughly 40 seconds for a contra-angle, and Bien-Air states it reduces oil consumption compared with manual maintenance. Confirm the correct programme for your model in the Lubricare 2 documentation before you switch.

Sterilization Settings, Pouching and the Cool-Down Trap

PICTURE THIS

A hygienist finishes back-to-back appointments. The bur is out, the handpiece is on the tray, and the clock says 22 minutes since the last patient. The 30-minute window is not a suggestion, and eight minutes is not a lot of time on a busy afternoon. That is exactly why a written routine beats memory.

Sterilization quality depends on how clean the instrument is. Bien-Air is blunt about it: only perfectly clean instruments may be sterilized, and the handpiece should be completely dry before and after the cycle.

Parameter	Bien-Air CA PRIMA requirement
Cycle type	Dynamic air removal only: pre-vacuum or steam-flush pressure pulse. No gravity-displacement sterilizers.
Standard cycle	135°C for 3 minutes, or 132°C for 4 minutes
Where prion sterilization is required	135°C for 18 minutes
Chamber limits	Maximum 137°C; nominal setting 132–135.5°C; no more than 30 minutes at the maximum
Packaging	Pouch approved for steam sterilization
Bur	Removed before sterilization
Service life	Can be used for more than 1,000 sterilization cycles

The cool-down trap. After the cycle, including drying, take the handpiece out of the sterilizer. Bien-Air warns that leaving it exposed to excess heat can cause corrosion. It is a small habit with a big payoff.

If your autoclave is out of action, sterilization cycles cannot simply be skipped. Repair.Dental lists sterilization equipment rental services for exactly that gap.

Storage Smarts: Pouches, Original Packaging and the 7-Day Rule

READY TO USE? A 10-SECOND TEST

Pouch sealed, dry and within its expiry date? Good to go.
Pouch torn, damp or compromised? Clean, lubricate, and sterilize again.
Sterilized more than 7 days ago and not used? Bien-Air advises storing it in its original package rather than the pouch.
Stored refrigerated? Let it reach room temperature first.

Keep it in the pouch. Store the sterilized handpiece inside its sterilization pouch, in a dry, dust-free environment, at no more than 55°C.
Apply the 7-day rule. If the device will not be used for seven days or more after sterilization, remove it from the pouch and keep it in its original package.
Re-process when in doubt. If it is not stored in a pouch, or the pouch is no longer sterile, clean, lubricate, and sterilize again before use.
Watch the pouch expiry date, which depends on packaging type and storage conditions.
Warm it up. If it has been stored refrigerated, let it reach room temperature before unpacking.
Rest it properly chairside. Place it on a cleanable support during treatment, not on a surface that could transfer infection.
Mind the height. Bien-Air designs the device for use at a maximum height of 1.5 m to limit fall damage.

Your Daily, Weekly and Monthly Rhythm (Plus a Checklist You Can Print Today)

Bien-Air defines the per-use and per-day requirements. Weekly and monthly checks are not prescribed in the IFU, so the routine below is a practical clinic schedule built around the manufacturer's instructions.

Frequency	What to do
After every patient	Remove bur, clean and disinfect within 30 minutes, lubricate before sterilization, bag and sterilize. Before the next use, test operation and confirm the bur is locked and turns freely.
End of day	Confirm every handpiece has had at least two lubrications that day. Check pouches are sealed, dated, and stored dry.
Weekly (suggested)	Look at the spray pattern for even mist. Check the push-button feels smooth. Skim pouch dates. Update each handpiece's cycle count.
Monthly (suggested)	Compare cycle counts with the 4,000-cycle service milestone. Check stock of Spraynet, Lubrifluid, and Aquacare. Review compressor and filtration maintenance, because the IFU stresses dry, purified compressed air and filtered water.

Printable checklist for the sterilization room

☐ Bur removed, handpiece disconnected (irrigation line off on external-spray versions)

☐ Cleaned and disinfected within 30 minutes of treatment

☐ Rinsed twice with suitable water

☐ Inside sprayed with Spraynet, exterior dried

☐ Lubrifluid applied: 1 second, excess wiped

☐ Bagged in a steam-approved pouch

☐ Dynamic air-removal cycle run and logged

☐ Removed promptly after the cycle, dry

☐ Stored in a dry, dust-free place, pouch intact and dated

Seven Silent Killers of Contra-Angle Life (and How to Stop Them)

Most handpiece damage is not dramatic. It is the accumulation of habits that feel harmless. Start by testing a few beliefs against Bien-Air's instructions:

Common belief	What Bien-Air's documents say
"Ultrasonic cleaning is more thorough."	Ultrasonic cleaners must not be used. Clean manually or in a washer-disinfector.
"A saline soak keeps it from drying out."	Do not submerge in physiological liquid (NaCl) or keep it moist with saline before cleaning.
"Leave it in the autoclave so it stays sterile."	Remove it promptly after the cycle; extended heat exposure can cause corrosion.
"Cleaning can wait until the end of the day."	Clean and disinfect within a maximum of 30 minutes after each treatment.
"Any oil works."	Use Lubrifluid only. Other products may cause faults or void the guarantee.

Remove the bur before cleaning and sterilizing
Clean within 30 minutes of treatment
Use Lubrifluid, Spraynet and other Bien-Air-approved products
Rinse twice and dry thoroughly
Use dynamic air-removal cycles
Check bur seating by gently pushing and pulling

DON'T

Use an ultrasonic cleaner
Soak in saline or leave it wet
Scrub with a wire brush
Run gravity-displacement sterilization
Leave it in the hot sterilizer after the cycle
Press the push-button while it is rotating

Delaying cleaning past the 30-minute mark. Residue hardens and blocks the drive.
Using generic or improvised lubricants. Bien-Air specifies Lubrifluid and warns that other products can cause faults or void the guarantee.
Trusting the ultrasonic bath. It is convenient, and it is explicitly not allowed.
Sterilizing with the bur in place. The bur must come out first.
Ignoring water and air quality. Unfiltered hard water blocks tubes, connectors, and spray cones.
Skipping the pre-use test. The IFU asks for a test before any clinical application.
Treating the 4,000-cycle service as optional. It is the manufacturer's recommendation, alongside a five-year limit.

When Care Is Not Enough: Calling in the Professionals

Perfect routine care still cannot stop wear. Bien-Air recommends regular servicing after 4,000 processing cycles or five years, and it says never to dismantle the device. That is where professional help fits in.

Plan the service; do not wait for the fault. See our companion repair guide in this series and the RepairGuru Handpiece Hub.
Build a schedule. A Preventive Maintenance Agreement or a broader Dental Equipment Maintenance Agreement keeps inspections on the calendar.
Check the sterilizer too. A perfect handpiece routine depends on a sterilizer that performs. Read about infection control and sterilization equipment certification.
