Five Stages, Every Single Cycle

Bien-Air's own maintenance documentation for its turbine line, which explicitly lists the Tornado L and Tornado LK among the models it covers, breaks reprocessing into five stages: preparation, cleaning, disinfection, lubrication, and sterilization. Skipping or reordering any of them is one of the more common ways a Tornado S loses performance well before it should.

Stage 1: Preparation

Remove the rotary instrument from the chuck mechanism
Perform external pre-disinfection

Never do this

Do not immerse the instrument in a disinfectant bath at this stage.

Stage 2: Cleaning

Clean under running water below 38°C (100°F).
Carefully remove all traces of dirt or deposits from the spray nozzles using the Bien-Air cleaning wire.
Dry the nozzles with compressed air, then dry the rest of the instrument with a cloth.
Shake the Spraynet cleaning spray before use, then apply it internally and externally using the correct attachment for your turbine type 2-/3-way or 4-way holding the tip downward and protecting it with an absorbent cloth.

Never do this

Do not immerse the turbine in an ultrasonic cleaner.

Stage 3: Disinfection

Choose one of two validated paths:

Surface disinfectant, following that product's own instructions for use, without immersing the instrument in a disinfectant bath
Thermal disinfection, following the disinfection equipment manufacturer's own instructions

Stage 4: Lubrication

Shake the Lubrifluid before use.
Select the correct Lubrifluid attachment for your turbine type; a different nozzle is specified for 2-/3-way turbines versus 4-way turbines.
Hold the tip of the instrument pointing down, protect it with an absorbent cloth, and press the Lubrifluid button for 1 second.
Run an operating test for 30 seconds at low speed to remove any surplus lubricant.
Store the instrument immediately afterward with the tip pointing downward so any oil residue can drain out.

Stage 5: Sterilization

Place the turbine in a sterilization bag.
Sterilize in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Only instruments bearing the appropriate autoclave symbol should be sterilized this way.

Hard rule

Only sterilize instruments that have already been properly cleaned, dried, and lubricated. Sterilizing a dirty or unlubricated turbine is outside Bien-Air's documented procedure and risks damaging it.

Using the wrong nozzle size for your specific Tornado configuration is a common, easily avoided source of incomplete internal cleaning or lubrication.

Store the instrument with the tip pointing downward immediately after lubrication, so oil residue can drain rather than pool
Keep sterilized turbines in their sealed sterilization bags until use
Store in a dry, dust-free environment
