Cleaning the CA 1:5 Properly

Remove the bur before cleaning or lubricating the handpiece

Wipe the exterior with a soft cloth, avoiding abrasive pads that can scratch the stainless steel body

Flush the spray lines briefly to clear residual water and debris before sterilization

Lubrication: What Bien-Air Recommends

Use Bien-Air's approved lubricant specifically for the CA 1:5, applied after cleaning and before sterilization. Consistency matters more than any single application. A handpiece lubricated correctly nine times out of ten still accumulates the friction-related wear that the tenth skipped cycle allows.

Worth knowing: the CA 1:5's wide 500 to 200,000 rpm range means it's doing more mechanical work meaningfully across a single procedure than a fixed-speed instrument. That range is exactly why the drive mechanism needs steady lubrication; it's not idling at one speed, it's transitioning across the full range as the clinician's foot pedal demands.

Sterilization Parameters

Sterilize the CA 1:5 after every patient, following your practice's standard autoclave cycle for electric handpieces, and always confirm current temperature and duration parameters against the instructions for use for your specific reference number; with-L and without-L units can have slightly different guidance around the light components.

Caring for the Adjustable Light (L Models)

The optical glass conductor that carries light to the L version's head is a genuine maintenance point most practices overlook until the light noticeably dims. Include it in your routine visual check; debris or wear at the conductor interface is a common, easily addressed cause of reduced illumination.

Storage That Protects a Long-Term Investment

Keep sterilized units sealed in their autoclave pouch until the moment of use

Store in a dedicated handpiece tray rather than loose in a drawer with other instruments

Maintenance Mistakes to Avoid

Skipping lubrication on a unit that "still feels fine"

Wear from inconsistent lubrication compounds long before it's audible or noticeable by feel.

Assuming the L and non-L versions have identical care needs

The optical conductor on L models is an added maintenance point the non-L version doesn't have.

Mixing up Classic CA 1:5 and CA NOVA 1:5 lubricants or parts

Confirm your generation before ordering; the two lines aren't identical under the hood.

Extending a Forty-Year Design's Lifespan

The CA 1:5's reputation for longevity isn't automatic; it's the result of a design that rewards consistent care more visibly than most. A unit maintained on schedule for its entire working life can genuinely approach the kind of multi-decade service history that gives this handpiece its reputation in the first place. A unit maintained inconsistently won't get anywhere close, regardless of how well-engineered the drive mechanism is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Does a forty-year-old design need different lubricant than modern handpieces?

A. Use Bien-Air's currently approved lubricant for the CA 1:5; specific formulations are updated over time even when the handpiece design itself hasn't changed.

Q. How do I know if the optical conductor needs attention?

A. Noticeably dimmer or flickering light on an L model is the clearest sign; include a visual check in your monthly routine.

Q. Is it true the CA 1:5 can last decades with proper care?

A. Bien-Air has kept the design in continuous production for roughly forty years specifically because well-maintained units hold up, but that longevity depends entirely on consistent care, not the design alone.

Q. Do Classic and CA NOVA versions need different sterilization cycles?

A. Core sterilization principles are similar, but always check the instructions for use for your specific reference number rather than assuming.

"We finally started tracking lubrication cycles properly on our CA 1:5 units, and it's noticeably smoother at high speed than it was a year ago."
