Cavitron Steri-Mate Maintenance: A Practical Care Routine for Busy Hygiene Rooms

Ultrasonic scaling is one of the most-used procedures in a hygiene schedule, and the Cavitron Steri-Mate goes through the reprocessing cycle after every single patient. That makes it one of the hardest-working pieces of equipment in the practice, and one of the easiest to wear out through small, repeated mistakes.

The 3-Minute Difference: Why This Handpiece Has Its Own Cycle

Dentsply Sirona's Cavitron infection control procedures list a 3-minute cycle at 270°F / 132°C for the Steri-Mate, while the rotating Steri-Mate 360 is listed at 10 minutes. If your practice runs both, label sterilizer presets clearly. Processing each handpiece on its own validated cycle is part of maintenance, not just infection control.

Morning Start-Up: The First Five Minutes Matter

The Cavitron Plus Quick Maintenance Guide sets out this sequence:

Open the manual shut-off valve on the dental office water supply.
Install a sterilized Steri-Mate handpiece on the handpiece cable.
Set the power control to minimum and the lavage control to maximum, then turn the system on.
Hold the handpiece, with no insert, over a sink or drain and press Purge. The button lights for two minutes. If an insert is in place, it blinks for 3 seconds and disables.
After the purge, seat a sterilized 30 kHz Cavitron insert and adjust the controls.

On a G139 Built-In, the directions for use describe a similar start: flush water through the empty handpiece for at least two minutes at maximum lavage.

Between Every Patient: From Chair to Autoclave

At the Chair

Remove the used insert and purge the handpiece over a sink.
Turn the system off and remove the Steri-Mate.
Wipe off moist debris with a water-moistened lint-free wipe and dry it. Do not let residue dry on the handpiece.

In the Sterilization Area

Clean with soap and water or a cleaning solution, using a disposable syringe for the openings.
Rinse under tepid running water for 30 seconds and dry with a lint-free wipe.
Bag it, paper side up, and run the 3-minute cycle at 270°F / 132°C in a dynamic air removal steam sterilizer, followed by 20 to 30 minutes of drying.

On the Unit

Disinfect the cabinet, cable, foot pedal, and supply lines with disinfectant on a towel. Do not spray the unit directly.
Inspect the handpiece cable for breaks or tears.

Validated vs. Off-Limits Reprocessing Methods

Method	Dentsply Sirona Guidance	Team Takeaway
Manual cleaning	Specified	Soap and water or cleaning solution, then rinse and dry
Steam, dynamic air removal	Specified: 132°C / 270°F, 3 minutes	Bag paper side up; dry 20 to 30 minutes
Chemical disinfectant before sterilizing	Do not use	Can cause rapid material deterioration
Ultrasonic bath	Do not immerse	Clean the Steri-Mate by hand only
Washer-disinfector, cold liquid, chemical vapor, dry heat	Not tested or validated	Stick to manual cleaning plus steam

O-Rings: The Only Lubrication This Handpiece Needs

The Steri-Mate is a magnetostrictive ultrasonic handpiece, not an air turbine, and its reprocessing instructions include no oiling step. What it does need is healthy, wet O-rings.

Lubricate the insert O-ring with water before seating, and use a gentle push-twist. Do not force it.
Inspect the O-rings on the handpiece and the cable connector at every cycle and replace any that are worn.
Keep the electrical connections clean and dry before assembling the handpiece and cable.

Weekly: Waterline Disinfection

Dentsply Sirona strongly recommends chemically flushing the waterlines with a 1:10 sodium hypochlorite solution at the end of each week. Flush at maximum flow for at least 30 seconds, let it sit for 10 to 30 minutes with a "do not use" sign posted, then flush with clean water for at least 30 seconds or until the odor is gone

Monthly: Filter, Pressure and Water Temperature

Water filter: replace the water line filter (part 90158) when discolored to prevent reduced flow.
Water pressure: the G139 directions for use specify 25 to 60 psi incoming pressure, with a regulator if it runs higher.
Water temperature: incoming water should not exceed 77°F / 25°C.
Handpiece count: make sure there are enough sterilized Steri-Mates in rotation for your schedule.

Inserts Are Part of Handpiece Maintenance Too

A worn insert makes the whole system work harder. Dentsply Sirona notes that inserts with just 2 mm of wear lose about 50% of their scaling efficiency, and it generally recommends replacing inserts after one year of use. Check them regularly with the insert wear indicator, and discard any insert that has been bent, reshaped, or damaged.

End-of-Day Shutdown and Storage

Complete the between-patient steps for the last patient.
Close the manual shut-off valve on the dental office water supply. Dentsply Sirona recommends doing this every night.
Store sterilized Steri-Mates bagged in a clean, dry place.

Seven Mistakes That Shorten Steri-Mate Life

Running it on the 10-minute Steri-Mate 360 cycle, or any cycle not validated for it.
Putting it in the ultrasonic cleaner.
Spraying or soaking it in chemical disinfectant before sterilizing.
Assembling the handpiece and cable with wet connectors.
Forcing inserts in with dry O-rings.
Running the system without water flowing through the handpiece.
Skipping the weekly waterline flush.

Cavitron Steri-Mate Maintenance FAQs

What are the autoclave settings for the Cavitron Steri-Mate?

Dentsply Sirona lists 270°F / 132°C for 3 minutes in a dynamic air removal steam sterilizer, with a 20 to 30 minute drying cycle.

Is the Steri-Mate cycle the same as the Steri-Mate 360?

No. The Steri-Mate 360 is listed at 10 minutes at the same temperature. Use the correct cycle for each handpiece.
