The iStar Cordless Prophy System cannot be sterilized, and DentalEZ's instruction manual says so directly: this product cannot be sterilized, and attempting to do so is not supported. Infection control instead relies on three things working together a single-use handpiece sleeve, a single-use disposable prophy angle, and a wipe-down disinfection routine on the motor and Stand between patients. Understanding that structure is the key to maintaining this system correctly.

Core rule

Install a new single-use handpiece sleeve before every use, and never reuse a disposable prophy angle or sleeve on more than one patient.

After Every Patient

Turn off the handpiece motor by pressing and holding the POWER key until the speed lights turn off.
Pull straight on the disposable prophy angle to remove it.
Carefully remove and discard the handpiece sleeve as contaminated patient care waste, per your state and local medical waste regulations.
Wipe down the handpiece motor with disinfectant alcohol, covering all surfaces including the chuck, buttons, and bottom charge area.
Install a fresh handpiece sleeve before the next use.

What Counts as an Approved Disinfectant

DentalEZ specifies disinfectant ethanol or disinfectant isopropanol without additives, specifically without any quaternary ammonium salts, for cleaning and disinfection. Rubbing alcohol with an ethanol content of 76.9 to 81.4 percent is the manual's recommended option.

Use This	Avoid This
Disinfectant ethanol or isopropanol without quaternary ammonium additives	Disinfectants containing quaternary ammonium salts may cause discoloration or cracking
A lightly moistened cloth followed by alcohol wipe-down	Benzene, paint thinner, or other solvents
Wiping the Stand and adapter with a moistened, then alcohol-dampened cloth	Spraying or immersing the motor in any fluid

Charging Care

Standard charging time is approximately 90 minutes, though this varies with battery age and condition
Charge in a location between roughly 10°C and 40°C outside that range, charging will not begin
If unused for a long period, charge the battery before use; a fully discharged battery left too long may no longer charge properly
Remove the handpiece sleeve before placing the motor on the charging Stand
Place the motor into the Stand gently a strong impact can cause failure
It's recommended to charge the battery immediately before use, since it discharges gradually even when idle

No Lubrication Ever

Do not lubricate

DentalEZ's manual is explicit: do not lubricate the handpiece motor. Doing so may cause overheating or failure. This is a fundamental difference from air-driven handpieces that require routine lubrication.

Respecting the Duty Cycle

The iStar has a documented continuous-use limit that doesn't apply to air-driven handpieces: no more than 3 minutes of continual use, followed by a rest period of at least 5 minutes before using again. Extended continuous use beyond this can cause the motor to overheat.

Plan longer prophylaxis appointments around this rest cycle rather than running the motor continuously
The maximum surface temperature during normal use can reach 45°C, which is expected rather than a fault on its own

Periodic Maintenance , Every 3 Months

DentalEZ specifies a quarterly check separate from routine patient-to-patient cleaning;

Check	What to Look For
Rotation	Run the handpiece motor and check for abnormal rotation, vibration, noise, or overheating

If any abnormality is found during this check, DentalEZ's guidance is to contact an authorized StarDental dealer for repair rather than continuing use.

Storage

Keep the unit out of direct sunlight to prevent discoloration of the handpiece body
Store within 10°C to 40°C for use, or -10°C to 50°C for transport and storage
Keep humidity within 30–75% RH during use
If the unit hasn't been used for an extended period, check for vibration, noise, and overheating before using it on a patient

Mistakes to Avoid

Reusing a disposable prophy angle or handpiece sleeve on more than one patient
Attempting to sterilize any part of the system
Using a disinfectant containing quaternary ammonium salts
Lubricating the motor
Letting the motor get wet with disinfectant solution, water, or saline
Running continuous cycles longer than 3 minutes without a rest period
Skipping the quarterly rotation check

Extending the System's Working Life

Most of what determines how long an iStar system lasts comes down to battery care and consistent wipe-down discipline rather than anything mechanical. Charging before the battery fully discharges, avoiding extreme temperatures during storage, and never skipping the alcohol wipe-down on the chuck and charge contacts are the habits that matter most.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use standard hospital-grade disinfectant wipes on the iStar?

Only if they meet DentalEZ's specification of disinfectant ethanol or isopropanol without quaternary ammonium additives. Many common surface wipes contain quats and are not recommended for this handpiece.

What happens if the motor gets splashed with water or saline during a procedure?

DentalEZ's instructions call for turning off the power immediately and thoroughly removing the fluid with an absorbent cloth. The handpiece motor has an IPX0 rating, meaning no specific water-ingress protection.
