Prophy powder is brilliant on tooth stains and terrible inside a handpiece. Add a little moisture, and it cakes, clogs, and quietly chokes the air path. That is why caring for a Jet-Mate is less about oil and more about keeping three things in balance: clean water, dry air, and free-flowing powder.

This guide turns Dentsply Sirona's official JET Plus maintenance and infection control instructions into a routine your team can actually follow, from the first purge of the morning to the weekly waterline flush.

The Jet-Mate Care Mindset: Water, Air and Powder

The Jet-Mate is not an air turbine, and Dentsply Sirona's reprocessing steps contain no oiling. The only "lubrication" called for is wetting O-rings with water before seating an insert. What the handpiece really needs is protection from its three biggest enemies:

Moisture in the powder path. When bleeding air from the handpiece, Dentsply Sirona warns against letting water into the powder delivery port because clogging may result.
Caked or contaminated powder. Only Cavitron prophy powders should go in the bowl, stored dry between 32°F / 0°C and 95°F / 35°C.
Rough handling of soft parts. The soft nozzle grip is a replaceable wear part and should sit flush with the hard plastic of the insert port.

Dental Handpiece Vibration Diagnosis on Repair Guru

Start of Day, Between Patients, and End of Day

Start of the Day

Open the manual shut-off valve on the office water supply.
With the system off, open the powder bowl and confirm it is empty. Turn the system on for 15 seconds to clear moisture from the lines, then off again.
Shake the powder bottle, fill the bowl no higher than the top of the center tube, and secure the cap.
Install a sterilized Jet-Mate, set power to minimum and lavage to maximum, and turn the system on.
If powder "fluffs" while the pedal is not pressed, there is an air leak. Turn off, clean powder from the cap O-ring and threads, and retighten.
Hold the empty handpiece over a sink and press Purge. The button lights for two minutes. If an insert is present, it blinks and disables, so remove the insert first.

Between Patients

Remove the used insert and purge the handpiece over a sink, then turn the system off.
Remove the Jet-Mate and send it for cleaning and sterilization.
Wipe the cabinet, cable, foot pedal, and supply lines with a water-based non-immersion disinfectant on a towel. Never spray the unit directly.
Inspect the handpiece cable for breaks or tears and check the powder level for the next patient.

End of the Day

Complete the between-patient steps and close the office water shut-off valve.
Discard unused powder, clear the bowl by running the system for 15 seconds with the open end pointed away from you, and wipe the cap, O-ring and threads with a soft dry cloth.

Reprocessing the Jet-Mate: Clean, Bag, Sterilize

Dentsply Sirona's infection control procedures cover the Jet-Mate alongside the Steri-Mate handpieces. In short:

At the chair: remove the insert, disconnect the handpiece, wipe off moist debris with a water-moistened lint-free wipe, and dry it. Do not let residue dry on it.
Manual cleaning: wipe with soap and water or a cleaning solution, use a disposable syringe for holes and cannulas, rinse under tepid running water for 30 seconds, and dry lint-free.
Sterilization: bag it, paper side up, and run 270°F / 132°C for 3 minutes in a validated dynamic air removal steam sterilizer, then dry 20 to 30 minutes.
Hands off the grip: Dentsply Sirona's reprocessing guide says not to disassemble the Jet-Mate soft nozzle grip from the handpiece during reprocessing.

Method	Dentsply Sirona Guidance	What It Means for Your Team
Manual cleaning	Specified	Soap and water or cleaning solution, syringe the openings, rinse 30 seconds
Steam, dynamic air removal	Specified: 132°C / 270°F, 3 minutes	Bag it, paper side up, then dry 20 to 30 minutes
Chemical disinfectant before sterilizing	Do not use	Can cause rapid material deterioration; not needed before autoclaving
Ultrasonic bath	Do not immerse	Keep the Jet-Mate out of the ultrasonic cleaner
Washer-disinfector, cold liquid, chemical vapor, dry heat	Not tested or validated	Stick to manual cleaning plus steam

Weekly and Monthly Jobs That Protect the Handpiece

Every Week

Brush residual powder from the powder bowl cap and bowl threads with a soft brush. Caked powder wears the threads and can loosen the cap.
Flush the waterlines with a 1:10 sodium hypochlorite solution at maximum flow for at least 30 seconds, let it sit 10 to 30 minutes, then flush with clean water for at least 30 seconds or until the odor is gone. Post a "do not use" sign during the soak.

Every Month

Replace the water line filter (part 90158, 10-pack) when it looks discolored.
Drain water from the air supply line filter, and replace the filter assembly (part 90088) if the element is dirty or discolored.
Service the powder bowl: check for strong airflow from the center tube and clear any clogged fitting with the nozzle cleaning wire tool.
Inspect the soft nozzle grip, powder delivery port, and O-rings. Replace worn parts before they cause leaks.

Air, Water and Powder Quality Rules

Many Jet-Mate problems start upstream of the handpiece. The JET Plus manual sets clear supply requirements:

Water pressure: 20 to 40 psi. Install a regulator if your supply runs higher.
Water temperature: no higher than 77°F / 25°C.
Air pressure: 65 to 100 psi, with an air dryer strongly recommended on the compressor line to stop condensation and powder caking.
Powder: Cavitron prophy powders only. Dentsply Sirona says other substances may clog the system and void the warranty.
Night routine: close the water shut-off valve every night and empty the powder bowl.

Mistakes That Wear Out a Jet-Mate Early

Letting water into the powder delivery port while bleeding air from the handpiece.
Leaving powder in the bowl overnight, where it absorbs moisture and clogs the lines.
Skipping the air dryer, so damp air turns powder into paste.
Forcing inserts in instead of wetting the O-ring and using a gentle push-twist.
Pulling the soft nozzle grip off during reprocessing.
Using chemical disinfectants, ultrasonic baths or the wrong sterilizer cycle on the handpiece.
Ignoring a grip that is not flush, which can cause weak scaling and leaky air polishing inserts.

Jet-Mate Maintenance FAQs

What are the autoclave settings for the Jet-Mate?

Dentsply Sirona lists 270°F / 132°C for 3 minutes in a dynamic air removal steam sterilizer, followed by a 20 to 30 minute drying cycle.

Do I need to oil the Jet-Mate handpiece?

No oiling step appears in Dentsply Sirona's instructions. The only lubrication they call for is wetting O-rings with water before inserting.
