When a Jet-Mate stops cooperating, the first question is not "what broke?" It is "which mode broke?" A handpiece that scales perfectly but will not polish has a very different problem from one that polishes fine but will not vibrate an insert.

Start Here: The Two-Minute Jet-Mate Triage

Dentsply Sirona notes that a loose plug or connection often causes problems, so begin with the simple stuff. Work through this list in order:

Check the basics. Is the main power switch on, the power cord fully seated, and the office water (and air) valve open?
Check the mode. Is the power control out of Rinse mode for scaling, or in Prophy mode for air polishing?
Reseat the handpiece. Align the electrical contacts, rotating gently until they line up, then push the Jet-Mate fully home.
Look at the grip. The soft nozzle grip should be flush with the hard plastic of the insert port.
Swap the insert, then the handpiece. A new insert or a known good Jet-Mate will tell you where the fault lies.
Restart. Turn the main power off, wait 5 seconds, then turn it back on.

Scaling Mode Problems

No Insert Cavitation

Make sure the power control is not in Rinse mode.
Check the insert for damage and confirm it is fully seated.
Confirm the soft nozzle grip is flush. If it is not, the insert may not go in far enough for automatic pick-up.
Replace both AA batteries in the Tap-On foot pedal or connect the auxiliary pedal cable.

Intermittent or No Scaling Power

The manual lists a worn insert, an insert not fully pushed in, a Jet-Mate malfunction, a bent or missing pin, cable wire faults, weak pedal batteries or a pedal out of sync. If power drops when the cable flexes, the cable needs a technician's continuity test.

Handpiece Heating Up

Increase the lavage control until the handpiece runs cool. Lower flow rates produce warmer lavage.
After changing inserts, hold the handpiece upright until trapped air clears.
Support the cable so the water tubing is not restricted, and swap in a new insert.
Flush the water system if the supply runs warm. Incoming water should not exceed 77°F / 25°C.

Leaks and Inserts That Will Not Seat

Wet the insert O-ring with water and use a gentle push-twist. Do not force it.
Replace worn O-rings with genuine Cavitron parts: black 62351 for plastic and soft grips, green 62605 for metal grips and the air polishing insert.
For leaks at the handpiece joint, replace the small connector O-ring (79357).

Air Polishing Mode Problems

Air Flows but Little or No Powder Comes Out

Move the powder flow pointer to H (12 o'clock).
Empty the bowl, clean it, and refill with fresh Cavitron powder. Old or moisture-contaminated powder is a common cause.
Use the cleaning wires to clear the Jet-Mate and the air polishing insert.
Confirm office air pressure is 65 to 100 psi.

No Bleed Air

Remove the air polishing insert and check for bleed air at the handpiece. If the insert is clogged, clear it with the cleaning tool. If the handpiece itself is blocked, the manual calls for clearing the Jet-Mate air/powder tube with the long cleaning wire. Blockages deeper in the unit need a technician.

Nozzle Keeps Blocking

Discard lumpy or contaminated powder.
Check the air supply line filter and drain any water.
Have the office compressor serviced. An air dryer is strongly recommended.

Air Polishing Insert Hard to Install or Leaking

Replace the green O-ring on the air polishing insert (62605) if it is damaged or deformed.
Fill the handpiece and wet the insert O-ring before inserting, aligning the powder delivery tube with the port.
If the soft nozzle grip is deformed, replace it (81717).

Powder Swirling When the Pedal Is Not Pressed

This usually means the powder cap is not sealing. Turn the system off, remove the cap and its O-ring, clean away powder carefully, and retighten. Replace a worn cap or O-ring.

Purge, Tap-On and Foot Pedal Glitches

Purge will not start: remove any insert, confirm the Jet-Mate is installed, and set lavage to maximum. Purge only runs with an empty handpiece.
Tap-On not working: it is disabled when the handpiece is in the holder or no insert is seated, and it will not work if the pedal is not tapped quickly. Hold Purge and Turbo together for about 5 seconds to enable it.
System will not respond to the pedal: if you have several pedals, make sure you have the right one, then resynchronize it following the manual.
Boost will not activate: Boost needs a scaling insert, not an air polishing insert, and the pedal must be fully pressed.
