KaVo 25 LPR Repair: Why Heat, Noise and Grip Problems Need Prompt Attention

If a KaVo GENTLEpower LUX 25 LPR feels warm, sounds rough, or no longer holds the bur firmly, repair it before using it again. KaVo warns that poorly maintained or damaged electric handpieces can generate frictional heat that may cause serious burns. This guide explains what usually fails and what a proper repair involves.

Why Electric Contra-Angles Become a Heat Risk

KaVo explains that electric micromotors generate much more power than air turbines. A damaged attachment keeps turning under load instead of stalling, so friction can build into heat. KaVo also warns never to press the chuck release button while the handpiece is rotating, including when the head is used as a cheek or tongue retractor.

Common Faults and Typical Repairs

Typical 25 LPR repair findings

What you notice	Usual cause	Repair approach
Warm head or cap	Worn bearings, gears or chuck parts; pressure on the button	Full inspection, replace worn parts
Grinding or clicking	Gear wear or damage	Gear replacement, alignment check
Bur slips or sticks	Chuck wear or debris	Chuck service or replacement
Weak spray	Blocked coolant path	Clean channels, replace seals

How a Proper Repair Is Carried Out

Run test on a known-good motor to separate attachment and motor faults.
Check for heat, noise and vibration.
Disassemble and inspect bearings, gears, chuck and spray paths.
Replace worn parts with matching parts.
Lubricate, run in and recheck temperature, noise, spray and bur grip.

KaVo's own repair service uses genuine KaVo parts and warns that imitation parts can void warranties. Ask any provider which parts they will use.

Repair or Replace the Attachment?

Repair when the housing is sound and the fault is limited to bearings, gears or the chuck.
Replace when the head is cracked or deformed, or it has overheated badly enough to discolour.
Check the motor too. A motor fault can look like an attachment fault.

Getting the Attachment Ready for Service

Clean, lubricate and sterilize it, and remove the bur.
Note REF 1.007.3580 and the serial number.
Describe the symptom and say clearly if it became warm.

KaVo suggests setting a routine service interval for electric attachments based on how much they are used. See the 25 LPR maintenance article in this series.

Early Warning Signs Worth Acting On

A faint warmth at the head after longer procedures.
A whine that has slowly risen over weeks.
Burs that release less smoothly.
Spray that seems weaker than other attachments on the same motor.

What to Tell the Technician About Heat

Say when the attachment warmed up, how long it had been running and what procedure it was used for. Heat changes what the technician inspects first, so clear information speeds up the diagnosis.

Setting a Service Interval After Repair

KaVo suggests a routine service interval for electric attachments, with the frequency based on how much they are used. Heavy restorative schedules usually need more frequent checks. A Preventive Maintenance Agreement can track this for you.
