KaVo EXPERTmatic E31 C Prophy Repair Guide: Protecting a Head Built to Keep Paste Out

Prophy paste is designed to be abrasive. That is great for polishing teeth and tough on the inside of a contra-angle. KaVo designed the EXPERTmatic E31 C with multiple seals specifically to stop that paste from getting in.

This guide explains how the E31 C is built, which symptoms suggest those defenses have been breached, and how to approach a repair

Built for the Hygiene Room

KaVo's official EXPERTmatic page describes the E31 C (Mat. no. 1.008.4998) as a 5.4:1 green prophylaxis reducing contra-angle with internally guided, separate cooling media, multiple seals that protect against ingress of polishing paste, and a special-sealed prophylaxis head that accepts both snap-on and screw-in attachments.

How the Seals Protect It

Every polish pushes paste toward the head. KaVo's multiple seals are the barrier between that paste and the internal parts. When a prophy angle starts to feel gritty or sound different, paste getting past those seals is one of the first things a technician will look for.

Symptoms by Area

Area	Symptom	What to Try	If It Continues
Seals and head	Gritty feel, grinding	Clean thoroughly, lubricate with KaVo products	Bench evaluation

Drive	Noise, heat, uneven speed	Lubricate; try another motor	Repair
Coupling	Loose or leaking	Replace O-ring set	Service

When Repair Is the Right Call

A gritty or grinding feel after thorough cleaning
Attachments that will not stay secure
Heat at the head during polishing
Noise or uneven running after correct lubrication

Warranty and Factory Service

KaVo covers EXPERTmatic instruments with a 24-month warranty. For a prophy angle that sees heavy daily use, it is worth logging the purchase date so you know immediately whether KaVo REPAIR applies.

How Repair.Dental Evaluates an E31 C

Verify it is the E31 C (1.008.4998) and not another prophy angle.
Inspect the head for signs of paste ingress.
Test snap-on and screw-in attachment retention.
Run it to assess smoothness, sound, and heat.
Explain what we find before any work begins.

Paste belongs on teeth, not in bearings. Let Repair. Dental restore your E31 C.

Choosing Snap-On or Screw-In Wisely

KaVo's E31 C head accepts both attachment styles, which gives hygienists flexibility. Whichever you use, make sure it is fully seated or threaded before polishing. A partially seated attachment wobbles, splatters paste, and puts uneven load on the head.
