Keep It Whisper-Quiet: The Complete GENTLEsilence Maintenance Playbook

Quiet turbines are sensitive to neglect. A GENTLEsilence that misses lubrication or runs on damp air will tell you about it, loudly. The good news is that the care routine is short. This playbook turns KaVo's maintenance guidance into a rhythm your whole team can follow, from the first patient of the day to the monthly check.

The Quiet-Turbine Rule: Protect the Bearings First

Everything in this guide comes back to one idea. A GENTLE silence stays quiet only as long as its bearings stay clean, lubricated, and dry. Every step below supports that goal.

Morning Start-Up Routine

Flush waterlines by running the handpiece with spray for a short time before the first patient.
Check that every spray outlet produces an even mist.
Attach the handpiece to the MULTIflex LUX coupling and give it a gentle pull to confirm it is locked.
Listen to a brief free run. You know how your turbine normally sounds. Notice any change.

Between Patients: Clean, Lubricate, Sterilize

KaVo's maintenance sheet for MULTIflex high-speed handpieces describes the following sequence:

Remove the handpiece from the coupling and take out the bur.
Scrub the exterior under cold running water with a soft sponge.
Do not spray, wipe or immerse in disinfectant.
Lubricate with KaVo Spray and the MULTIflex nozzle for about three seconds, covered with a cloth or Clean Pac.
Run the handpiece without a bur for around 20 seconds and wipe off excess oil.
Sterilize without a bur, up to a maximum of 135°C (275°F).

Water Filter and Spray Nozzle Care

KaVo's instructions for use for the GENTLEsilence LUX 8000B include two spray-related service steps: cleaning the spray nozzle and changing the water filter. When spray starts to weaken, these are the first places to look.

Watch for one or more spray jets becoming weaker than the others.
Clean the spray nozzle and change the water filter exactly as your KaVo instructions describe.
If spray stays weak after a new filter, the internal water path may need professional cleaning.

Your GENTLEsilence Care Calendar

GENTLEsilence care calendar

When	What to do	Watch for
Start of day	Flush, spray check, lock test	Uneven spray, loose fit
Every patient	Clean, KaVo Spray, sterilize without bur	Dark or gritty oil
Weekly	Inspect O-rings on handpiece and coupling	Flattened or cracked seals
Weekly	Bur pull test	Easy bur removal
Monthly	Pressure check with test gauge	Drive air outside specification
As needed	Change water filter, clean spray nozzle	Weak spray from one port

Air and Water Quality: The Silent Killers

KaVo's instructions for MULTIflex instruments warn that moist or contaminated cooling air leads to malfunctions and premature bearing wear. They specify dry, clean air according to ISO 7494-2.

Water matters too. Poor-quality water can deposit minerals that narrow spray outlets over time. Follow your unit manufacturer's waterline treatment protocol and keep filters fresh.

Light and Optics Care on LUX Models

GENTLEsilence LUX turbines use a glass-rod light guide. To keep illumination bright:

Wipe the light exit window gently during routine cleaning.
Avoid scratching the window with instruments or abrasive pads.
Make sure the handpiece is fully seated so light passes cleanly from the coupling.

Six Habits That Quietly Destroy a GENTLEsilence

Lubricating after sterilization instead of before.
Changing burs while the turbine is still spinning down.
Leaving a bur in the chuck during autoclaving.
Ignoring water dripping from the compressor drain or air lines.
Using lubricants other than those KaVo recommends.
Storing the handpiece flat in a damp tray.

O-Ring Care: The Small Seal That Protects the Connection

KaVo's instructions for the GENTLEsilence LUX 8000B include checking the O-rings and exchanging the O-rings on the coupling. Worn seals cause leaks, a loose fit and pressure loss.

Look for flattened, cracked or swollen O-rings during your weekly check.
Replace them with the correct parts as described in your instructions for use.
After replacing, attach the handpiece and pull gently to confirm a secure lock.

Checking Water Supply for Proper Spray Cooling

Good spray cooling depends on enough water reaching the head. As an example, KaVo's instructions for the GENTLEsilence 8000BS specify a spray water supply of at least 50 cm³/min. Check the figure given for your version.

Watch the spray during your morning start-up check.
Rotate the spray ring on the MULTIflex coupling to adjust the water fraction, as KaVo describes.
If spray stays weak, clean the spray nozzle and change the water filter as your instructions describe.

“Our turbines sound noticeably smoother since we fixed the air dryer.”

— Dentist, Rural Practice, Alberta
