KaVo INTRA EVA Head L61 G / L61 R Repair: Keeping the Stroke That Finishes What Burs Cannot

Some of dentistry's most delicate work happens between teeth: removing excess filling material, reshaping proximal surfaces, stripping enamel in orthodontics. KaVo's INTRA EVA heads L61 G and L61 R do that work with a damped stroke rather than rotation.

When that stroke changes, precision suffers. This guide explains how the two heads differ, what to watch for, and how to approach a repair.

At a glance (KaVo specifications): Damped 0.8 mm stroke · max. drive speed 20,000 rpm · L61 G (1.008.1828): files rotate freely · L61 R (1.008.1829): file locks into one of 36 snap-in positions.

The 30-Second Brief

Both heads use a damped 0.8 mm stroke for INTENSIV files and strips.
The L61 G lets files rotate freely; the L61 R locks them into one of 36 positions.
KaVo's US page lists a file ejector tool (0410.0634) with both heads.

What KaVo Designed These Heads to Do

KaVo lists the EVA heads for removing excess filling material and working restored proximal surfaces (Proxoshape files); interdental exposure, enamel reduction and polishing in orthodontics, known as stripping (Ortho Strips); bevelling anterior composites, composite slots, inlays and onlays, finishing veneer preparation borders, and finishing chamfers and bevelling shoulders in crown preparations (Bevelshape files); and removing enamel lamellae and finishing cavity walls (Cavishape files).

Warning Signs Worth Acting On

The stroke feels weak, harsh or inconsistent.
On the L61 R, the file no longer locks firmly into a snap-in position.
Files or strips do not seat or eject cleanly.
Noise or heat follows the head onto another shank.

Recommended Shanks, According to KaVo

KaVo's international page lists its prophylaxis heads, including the EVA heads, as ideal with the MASTERmatic M07 L. KaVo's US page recommends the M07 L (on electric motor), the M20 L, or the INTRAflex LUX 2307LN.

Repair or Replace?

KaVo states that after several years of use, the head should be replaced whereas the contra-angle handpiece can still be used. KaVo lists a 2-year warranty, so check KaVo REPAIR or KaVo's US service information first if your head is new.

How Repair.Dental Evaluates an EVA Head

Confirm G or R from the material number.
Test the 0.8 mm stroke on a known-good shank.
On the L61 R, test locking across snap-in positions.
Check file seating and ejection.
Recommend the most sensible path, with costs.
