KaVo INTRA Head L68 / L68 B Care Guide: Treat the Head Like Its Own Instrument

Because KaVo INTRA heads come off the shank, they are easy to think of as accessories. They are not. The L68 and L68 B do the cutting, hold the bur and take the wear, so they deserve their own care routine.

This guide explains what that routine looks like.

Quick answer: KaVo lists INTRA heads as thermo-disinfectable and sterilizable up to 135°C. Clean and care for each head through KaVo's preparation stages, keep the chuck area free of debris, and lubricate with KaVo-approved products.

Why Should a Head Get Its Own Routine?

KaVo describes its INTRA heads as having an optimised design without unnecessary corners and edges, for easy maintenance and reliable hygiene. That design only pays off if each head is actually cleaned, lubricated and sterilized every time it is used, including spare heads.

What Does a Good Head Routine Look Like?

Moment	L68	L68 B
After use	Remove bur; clear debris around the debris deflector disc	Remove bur or root canal instrument; clear the chuck area
Cleaning	External and internal cleaning, internal disinfection	Same
Care	KaVo Spray or QUATTROcare PLUS	Same; protects the ball-bearing chuck
Sterilization	Thermo-disinfectable; max 135°C	Thermo-disinfectable; max 135°C
Before use	Check bur grip	Check grip with bur or 2.35 mm root canal instrument

Where Does Debris Tend to Collect?

The L68 has a debris deflector disc as part of its chuck design, according to KaVo. Give that area deliberate attention during cleaning. For the L68 B, focus on the ball-bearing mounted push-button chuck area.

Which Care Products Fit?

KaVo offers KaVo Spray for manual care, CLEANspray and DRYspray for alcohol-free manual internal cleaning and drying, and the QUATTROcare PLUS for automated care with a collet program.

Myth vs. Fact

Myth: a spare head that was only used for a minute does not need sterilizing. Fact: every head used on a patient needs the full process.
Myth: any oil will do. Fact: KaVo's care tips recommend only KaVo-recommended care products and warn against descaling agents.
Myth: the shank takes most of the wear. Fact: KaVo says it is the head that should be replaced after several years.

How Should Spare Heads Be Stored?

Store each head only after full reprocessing, in its sterile packaging, labeled by model (L68 or L68 B) so the right head is ready for the right procedure.

How Does KaVo's Head Design Make Cleaning Easier?

KaVo says its INTRA heads have an optimised design without unnecessary corners and edges, for easy maintenance and reliable hygiene. Fewer edges means fewer places for residue to hide, but only if every surface is actually reached during cleaning. Work methodically around the head rather than giving it a quick wipe.

Is Automated Care Worth It for a Head Collection?

Practices with several INTRA heads often find manual care hard to keep consistent. KaVo says its QUATTROcare PLUS purges gears and spray channels with compressed air, removes excess oil and includes a collet program for reliable bur holding. For heads like the L68 B with a ball-bearing chuck, consistent automated care can take the guesswork out of the routine.
