KaVo PROPHYflex 4 Repair: What Your Team Can Fix and What Needs a Technician

Many PROPHYflex 4 problems can be fixed in the clinic with the tools KaVo supplies, especially clogging. When those steps do not work, or when the device leaks, will not lock, or is damaged, it needs professional attention. This guide explains where that line sits.

What KaVo Says About the PROPHYflex 4 Design

KaVo describes the PROPHYflex 4 as an air polishing device with a straight powder channel and mixing chamber designed to prevent blockages and simplify cleaning. It attaches to a KaVo MULTIflex or Sirona click'n go coupling. KaVo also lists PROPHYflex 4 S versions, so note which version you have before ordering parts.

Problems Your Team Can Usually Solve

Heavy clogging: KaVo's FAQ explains the nozzle can be unscrewed with the rear of the cannula key, and the powder tube cleaned from both sides with the cleaning burr.
No powder on the lowest setting: KaVo states this setting is almost powderless by design.
Worn perio tips: KaVo states each tip can be reprocessed up to 10 times, and refill packs are available.
Worn grip sleeve or cannula: KaVo sells these as separate accessories.

Problems That Need Professional Repair

When a PROPHYflex 4 needs a technician

Problem	Why it needs service	Typical work
Clogs return straight after clearing	Compacted powder deeper in the device	Professional cleaning
Powder or air leaking from the body	Seal or O-ring failure	Seal replacement
Will not lock on the coupling	Connection wear	Inspect and repair connection
Cracks or impact damage	Safety and performance risk	Assessment, repair or replacement

Safety Comes First

KaVo's instructions for use include safety sections on infection risk and on air embolism and skin emphysema. Air polishers deliver a pressurised air and powder stream, so a damaged or unreliable device should be taken out of service rather than used "until the end of the day".

Moisture: The Usual Root Cause

KaVo's maintenance guidance for its PROPHYflex devices states that compressed air must be completely free of moisture. Damp air makes powder clump. If clogs keep coming back after a repair, have the compressor dryer checked.

Preparing the Device for Service

Empty the powder container. KaVo states powder must not be reused.
Clean and reprocess the device as the instructions describe.
Note whether it is a MULTIflex or Sirona version.
Describe the problem and which in-clinic steps you have already tried.

Know Your Version: Standard or S

KaVo lists the PROPHYflex 4 in Wave, Lime and Flamingo, plus PROPHYflex 4 S versions in the same colours. KaVo also lists a separate cleaning adapter for the S version. Note the exact version and order number before ordering parts or arranging service.
