KaVo SMARTmatic S10 / S10 S Maintenance: The Care Routine That Protects Your Straight Handpiece

There is a number in KaVo's SMARTmatic S10 instructions that every team member should know: 30 minutes. KaVo recommends servicing the handpiece after each use and before each sterilization, but no later than after 30 minutes of operation. Miss that window often enough, and the chuck and drive start paying the price.

This guide turns KaVo's official instructions into a practical routine for the S10 and S10 S, from servicing and chuck care to sterilization and storage.

Why a Straight Handpiece Still Needs Daily Attention

It is tempting to treat a straight handpiece as low-maintenance. But the S10 holds burs with ceramic sliders rated up to 65 N of retention force and runs at up to 40,000 rpm. Every procedure pushes debris and moisture toward the chuck and drive. KaVo notes that it guarantees proper function of its products only when the care products it lists as accessories are used.

The 30-Minute Rule and the Care Products KaVo Approves

Servicing With KaVo Spray, Step by Step

Remove the bur from the handpiece.
Cover the handpiece with a KaVo Cleanpac bag and place it on the matching care adapter.
Press the spray key for 1 to 2 seconds.

Prefer Automation?

With the QUATTROcare PLUS, remove the bur and service the handpiece in the unit. KaVo's instructions refer you to the QUATTROcare PLUS manual for the full procedure.

Weekly Chuck Care

KaVo recommends servicing the chucking system once a week.

With KaVo Spray: remove the bur, position the tip of the spray nipple in the chuck opening, and press the spray key for 1 to 2 seconds.
With QUATTROcare PLUS: use its integrated chuck service program. Handpieces must be removed from the service couplings first.

Cleaning and Disinfection: Manual or Thermodisinfector

KaVo's FAQ confirms that SMARTmatic instruments can be washed and disinfected in a thermal disinfector, and that manual procedures are also allowed. Whichever you use, follow the reprocessing steps in the instructions for use, and service the handpiece afterwards and before sterilizing.

Sterilization Settings From KaVo

KaVo's S10 instructions specify steam sterilization to EN 13060 / EN ISO 17665-1, with the handpiece sealed separately in a sterile pack large enough not to stretch the packaging.

Sterilizer Type	KaVo Minimum Cycle	Practical Note
Triple pre-vacuum	At least 3 minutes at 134°C (273°F)	The most common choice in modern practices
Gravity method	At least 10 minutes at 134°C (273°F)	Longer hold time to compensate for air removal
Gravity method, lower temperature	At least 30 minutes at 121°C (250°F)	Use only if your sterilizer runs this cycle
Maximum temperature	Up to 138°C (280.4°F)	Do not exceed this limit

One important step that is easy to miss: KaVo says to remove the handpiece from the sterilizer immediately after the cycle, because moisture can cause contact corrosion.

S10 S Only: Keeping the Spray Path Clear

KaVo warns that too little spray water can damage both the tooth and the handpiece through overheating. Check the spray water channels and clean the spray tube as needed using the nozzle needle (Mat. no. 0.410.0931) to free the water passage. Make spray checks part of your routine for every S10 S in the practice.

Coupling O-Rings: The No-Grease Rule

The O-rings on the motor coupling keep the connection tight. KaVo is very clear about how to treat them:

Do not use Vaseline or any other grease or oil.
Spray a lint-free cloth with KaVo Spray and wipe the O-rings.
Replace missing or damaged O-rings. KaVo says they can cause malfunction and premature failure.

Storage That Protects Your Investment

KaVo says reprocessed products should be stored protected from dust, in a dry, dark, and cool space with a low germ level. A closed drawer or cabinet away from the sterilizer's heat and steam works well.

Seven Care Mistakes That Shorten S10 Life

Waiting longer than 30 minutes of operation before servicing.
Using non-KaVo care products.
Skipping weekly chuck care.
Greasing the coupling O-rings with Vaseline or oil.
Leaving the handpiece in the sterilizer after the cycle ends.
Exceeding 138°C during sterilization.
Ignoring weak spray on an S10 S.
