KaVo SMARTmatic S20 / S20 S Maintenance: A Care Calendar That Actually Sticks

Contra-angle problems rarely start with one dramatic moment. They build up quietly: a skipped spray here, a generic oil there. Keeping a KaVo SMARTmatic S20 or S20 S in shape takes minutes, as long as everyone follows the same routine.

This guide organizes KaVo's own care guidance by when it happens, so your team always knows what comes next.

THE NON-NEGOTIABLES

KaVo Spray or QUATTROcare PLUS only. No Vaseline on O-rings. No descaling agents. Stay within KaVo's maximum sterilization temperature. Follow the instructions supplied with your instrument for cycle times and chuck care intervals.

Why the S20 Rewards Routine

KaVo builds the S20 from rust-free stainless steel with ceramic sliders in the chuck. Durable materials still need the right care product: KaVo's SMARTmatic FAQ states that instrument maintenance must be carried out with KaVo Spray or the QUATTROcare PLUS.

After Every Patient

Remove the bur.
Clean and disinfect. KaVo confirms SMARTmatic instruments can be washed and disinfected in a thermal disinfector, and that manual procedures are also allowed.
Service with KaVo Spray or the QUATTROcare PLUS.
Sterilize, staying within KaVo's maximum temperature.

S20 S Only: Keeping the Spray Channels Clear

KaVo's care tips explain that spray channels can clog when water is hard, and that too little spray water can damage the tooth and pulp through overheating. Its advice:

Clean spray nozzles using the dedicated nozzle needles from the manufacturer.
Do not use a root canal needle, which can damage the spray channels.
Never place the handpiece in, or spray it with, a descaling agent. This may lead to corrosion.

O-Ring Care, the KaVo Way

KaVo's care tips give clear rules for O-rings:

Replace all O-rings at the same time, without sharp or hard tools.
Use only KaVo-recommended oils, since other chemicals may make O-rings decompose or swell. Never use Vaseline.
Attach and remove the instrument in a straight line, with a slight twist, onto and off the motor coupling.

Sterilization: Know the Ceiling

KaVo's international SMARTmatic page lists SMARTmatic instruments as sterilizable to 138°C (280.4°F). Its US page lists sterilization up to 135°C (275°F). Use the cycle in the instructions supplied with your S20, and never exceed the limit that applies to your instrument.

Habits That Quietly Shorten S20 Life

Using lubricants KaVo does not list for SMARTmatic instruments.
Greasing O-rings with Vaseline.
Cleaning spray nozzles with a root canal needle.
Using descaling agents on the handpiece.
Exceeding the maximum sterilization temperature.
