The SUPERtorque Care Routine: Daily, Weekly and Monthly Habits That Keep KaVo Turbines Running for Years

A SUPERtorque that gets two minutes of correct care after every patient can outlast one that is serviced only when it fails. The difference is not expensive products or complicated steps. It is doing the same simple routine, in the right order, every single time. Here is that routine, built around KaVo's own maintenance guidance for MULTIflex high-speed handpieces.

Handpiece Inspection on Repair Guru

Why Two Minutes of Care Beats a Bench Repair

Air turbines spin extremely fast on tiny bearings. Every cycle through the autoclave, every drop of saliva drawn back into the head, and every puff of damp compressed air adds wear. Lubrication creates a protective film. Cleaning removes debris before it is baked on. Correct storage stops condensation from sitting in the bearings.

Skip any one of those steps and the turbine starts losing life quietly. The bill shows up months later as a bearing replacement.

After Every Patient: The Chairside Reset

KaVo's maintenance sheet for MULTIflex high-speed handpieces sets out a clear order of operations. Adapted for daily practice, it looks like this:

Run the handpiece briefly with water spray to flush the waterlines.
Remove the handpiece from the MULTIflex coupling and take out the bur.
Scrub the outside under cold running water with a soft sponge.
Do not spray, wipe or soak the handpiece in disinfectant, and do not combine disinfecting with sterilization.
Lubricate with KaVo Spray using the MULTIflex nozzle (covered with a cloth or KaVo Clean Pac), spraying for about three seconds.
Refit the handpiece without a bur, run it for around 20 seconds and wipe off excess lubricant.
Sterilize without a bur.

Lubrication Done Right: KaVo Spray, QUATTROcare and the 20-Second Run

KaVo states that MULTIflex high-speed handpieces must be lubricated before every sterilization cycle and that other maintenance fluids are not recommended. Practices with a KaVo QUATTROcare unit can use it to replace the manual spray-and-run steps.

Two details are easy to miss:

Do not spray after sterilization. Lubricant goes in before the autoclave, never after.
Fixed-back variants lubricate differently. KaVo's guidance for fixed-back high-speed handpieces uses the pointed adapter on the Quick Nozzle, inserted into the drive air hole. Make sure your team knows which version they are holding.

Sterilization Without Shortcuts

KaVo's maintenance guide permits sterilizing MULTIflex high-speed handpieces without a bur at up to 135°C (275°F). Always follow the specific instructions for your handpiece and your sterilizer. Keep these points in mind:

Never leave a bur in the chuck during sterilization.
The MULTIflex coupling itself cannot be sterilized. Wipe it according to its own instructions.
Condensation can form after the cycle. KaVo recommends storing handpieces upright.
Let the handpiece cool naturally rather than speeding things up with cold water.

If your autoclave cycles seem inconsistent, our team also handles sterilization equipment certification. A faulty sterilizer can quietly harm every instrument it processes.

Your Weekly and Monthly SUPERtorque Checklist

Daily care handles contamination. Weekly and monthly checks catch slow wear before it becomes a breakdown.

SUPERtorque maintenance schedule

How often	Task	Why it matters
Every patient	Clean, lubricate with KaVo Spray, sterilize without bur	Removes debris and protects bearings
Daily	Check spray from every outlet	Spots blocked ports before teeth overheat
Weekly	Inspect O-rings on the handpiece and MULTIflex coupling	Worn seals cause leaks and loose fit
Weekly	Pull-test bur retention	Confirms the chuck still grips firmly
Monthly	Listen for noise changes during a free run	Rising pitch is an early bearing warning
Monthly	Check drive pressure with a test gauge	Too much or too little pressure shortens turbine life

Compressed Air: The Hidden Factor in Turbine Lifespan

KaVo's instructions for MULTIflex instruments warn that moist or contaminated cooling air can cause malfunctions and early bearing wear. They call for dry, clean air according to ISO 7494-2.

In practice, this means draining the compressor tank, keeping the dryer working and replacing filters on schedule. If your compressor is struggling, Repair.Dental can supply a portable compressor rental while your main unit is serviced.

Storage Habits That Protect Bearings Overnight

Store handpieces upright so any condensation drains away from the head.
Keep them in a clean, dry drawer or cassette, away from autoclave steam.
Never leave a bur seated in the chuck overnight.
For handpieces that sit unused for a while, lubricate and run them before returning them to service.

Seven Care Mistakes That Shorten SUPERtorque Life

Spraying lubricant after the autoclave instead of before.
Soaking or wiping the handpiece with disinfectant.
Using a generic oil instead of the recommended KaVo Spray.
Releasing the bur while the turbine is still turning.
Sterilizing with a bur in the chuck.
Ignoring a wet or oily air supply.
Using pliers on the head cap instead of the correct tool.

Training New Team Members on SUPERtorque Care

Most maintenance mistakes happen when a new assistant learns the routine from memory rather than from the instructions. A short, structured handover prevents that.

Show the full routine once, from removing the bur to storing the handpiece upright.
Have the new team member do it while you watch.
Point out the two rules people forget most: lubricate before the autoclave, never after, and never use disinfectant on the handpiece.
Keep KaVo's maintenance sheet within reach of the sterilization area.

Building a Simple Handpiece Care Log

A care log turns good intentions into a habit. It also gives your repair technician useful history when something goes wrong.

Record the date of each weekly O-ring and bur-retention check.
Note any change in sound, spray or light, even if it seems minor.
Record the date and result of monthly pressure checks.
Log every repair so patterns become visible over time.

Feedback From Clinics Using This Routine

SUPERtorque Maintenance FAQs

Q. How often should I lubricate a KaVo SUPERtorque?

KaVo's guidance says MULTIflex high-speed handpieces must be lubricated with KaVo Spray before every sterilization cycle.

Q. Can I use any handpiece oil on my 640 or 647?

KaVo states that other maintenance fluids are not recommended. Using KaVo Spray or a QUATTROcare unit keeps you aligned with the manufacturer's instructions.
