Lares MULTIforce 5K Straight Handpiece Repair Guide

The MULTIforce 0-5K is Lares Research's do-everything straight handpiece a single body that takes doriot-style contra angles, disposable or metal prophy angles, and straight or lab burs directly. That versatility is exactly why repair diagnosis on this handpiece often starts with a simple question: is the fault in the handpiece body itself, or in whichever attachment happens to be on it that day?

What You're Working With

Spec	Detail
Speed range	0–5,000 rpm
Connection	Any standard 4-hole supply hose
Attachments accepted	Doriot-style contra angles, disposable/metal prophy angles, straight/lab burs
Construction	Anodized aluminum and stainless steel exterior
Coupling	360° swivel

Common Failures

Attachment Won't Seat or Feels Loose

Because the MULTIforce accepts doriot-style attachments directly rather than using a single fixed head, wear at the connection point between the handpiece body and whatever's attached contra angle, prophy angle, or bur is one of the most common complaints. This is often the attachment interface wearing, not the handpiece motor itself.

Reduced Power or Torque

A MULTIforce that feels notably weaker than it did new, especially under load, points to internal wear worth comparing against the handpiece's rated performance rather than assuming it's simply "getting old."

Swivel Coupling Stiffness or Drag

The 360° swivel is specifically designed to reduce tubing drag and hand fatigue. Stiffness or resistance here is usually debris or wear at the coupling rather than a fault with the handpiece body.

Noise or Vibration

Lares markets this handpiece specifically for quiet, vibration-free operation so a MULTIforce that's become noisy or vibrates noticeably has likely developed internal bearing or gear wear worth having inspected.

Air or Water Leakage

Leakage at the 4-hole connection point is typically a seal or O-ring issue rather than a problem with the handpiece body itself.

Diagnosing the Fault

Symptom	Likely Cause
Attachment loose or won't seat	Attachment interface wear
Noticeably reduced power	Internal motor wear
Swivel feels stiff	Coupling debris or wear
Unusual noise or vibration	Internal bearing or gear wear
Leakage at the connection	Seal or O-ring wear

The Repair Process

Isolate whether the fault follows the handpiece body or a specific attachment by testing with a different contra angle, prophy angle, or bur.
Check the 4-hole connection and swivel for debris or visible wear before assuming an internal fault.
For confirmed power loss or noise, have the internal motor components inspected against Lares's tolerances.
Replace worn seals, O-rings, or swivel components as needed.
Reassemble and test power, swivel action, and attachment retention before returning to service.

Genuine Parts Matter Here

Lares Research manufactures its highspeed handpieces to tolerances as close as 20 millionths of an inch, per their own materials, and specifically cautions that knock-off repair parts don't deliver the same precision and often use lower-quality bearings.

For a handpiece built around swappable attachments, using genuine Lares components at the interface points matters as much as the internal repair itself.

Replacement Parts Commonly Involved

Attachment interface / chuck components
Swivel coupling assembly
O-rings and seals at the 4-hole connection
Internal bearing and gear components

What Practices Are Saying

★★★★★ We assumed our MULTIforce needed a full rebuild when power dropped off. Turned out it was the prophy angle attachment wearing, not the handpiece itself.

— Dental Assistant, General Dentistry Practice

★★★★★ The swivel on one of our units got stiff after a couple years. A cleaning and inspection sorted it — no internal repair needed.

FAQs

How do I know if it's my MULTIforce handpiece or the attachment that's worn?

Test the same handpiece with a different contra angle, prophy angle, or bur if the problem follows the attachment rather than the handpiece, that's your answer.

Is the newer MULTIforce significantly different from older Lares lowspeed handpieces?

Per Lares's own documentation, this generation delivers 300% more power and torque while being 47% lighter and 13% shorter than the prior model worth factoring in if comparing to an older unit.
