Lares SmoothDrive Electric Contra Angle Maintenance Guide

Because SmoothDrive attachments connect to whatever electric motor system your practice runs, maintenance really covers two things: the attachment itself, and making sure it's paired correctly with a compatible, well-maintained motor. Miss either half and you'll chase symptoms that look like a handpiece fault but aren't.

After Every Patient

Remove the bur and wipe down the exterior of the attachment.

Clean the push-button chuck mechanism to prevent debris buildup.

Wipe the fiber optic rod surface to maintain light transmission.

Flush the quad-port spray briefly to clear residual water from all four ports.

Lubricate using Lares's Handpiece Conditioner before sterilization.

Weekly Care

Pull-test a seated bur to confirm the chuck is still gripping at full strength.

Inspect each of the four spray ports individually for blockage.

Check the fiber rod for visible scratches or wear that cleaning alone won't resolve.

Sterilization

Confirm current sterilization parameters for your specific SmoothDrive model against Lares's official instructions for use electric contra angles can have different reprocessing requirements than air-driven handpieces, so don't assume parity across your full equipment mix.

Motor Compatibility Is a Maintenance Issue Too

SmoothDrive is designed to fit a wide range of electric motor brands, which is a strength but it also means a poorly matched or poorly maintained motor can cause symptoms (weak power, inconsistent speed) that look like a handpiece problem.

Keeping your electric motor system on its own maintenance schedule is just as important as caring for the SmoothDrive attachment itself.

Monthly Care

Review chuck and spray performance across your full SmoothDrive fleet.

Confirm your electric motor system is on its own maintenance schedule, separate from the contra angle attachments.

Check whether Club Lares's repair benefits apply to your practice's SmoothDrive units if you purchase Lares consumables regularly.

Storage

Store sterilized attachments in their packaging until ready for use.

Protect the fiber optic rod from scratches during handling and storage.

Mistakes to Avoid

Skipping Handpiece Conditioner lubrication before sterilization.

Assuming a power or speed issue is the SmoothDrive attachment without checking motor compatibility first.

Neglecting individual spray port cleaning a quad-port system can have one port blocked while the others run fine, masking the issue.

Ignoring early chuck stiffness instead of cleaning and testing it.

How do I know if my electric motor is compatible with SmoothDrive?

SmoothDrive is designed to fit leading electric motor brands broadly, but the 1:5 model specifically needs an ISO 3964-compatible motor running 0–40,000 rpm to reach its rated speed confirm against your motor's specifications.
