One Routine, Whether You Do It by Hand or by Machine

Dentsply Sirona publishes a single Midwest Maintenance Guide covering its air-driven and electric handpieces, attachments, and motors the Quiet-Air included. It describes both a manual process and an automated one using the Midwest Automate system, and while the equipment differs, the underlying six-step sequence is the same either way.

Step 1: Flush Before You Touch Anything Else

Run the handpiece on the unit with water for 20 to 30 seconds to flush the water and air lines. Only after that should you remove the bur, using safe removal methods.

Step 2: Disconnect

Remove the handpiece from the coupler or hose. For electric attachments, remove the attachment from the motor instead.

Step 3: Clean the Exterior Carefully

Clean the exterior with Midwest Plus Cleaner, a water-based, handpiece-safe surfactant.
Scrub under running water using a soft sponge to remove external debris and bioburden.
Pay particular attention to any fiber optic lens debris; this causes light obstruction, not just a dirty-looking handpiece.

This is non-negotiable

Never spray, wipe, or soak the handpiece in disinfectants or alcohol. Use only water and a handpiece-safe surfactant like Midwest Plus Cleaner. Never expose the handpiece to hand or dish soaps containing chloride.

The Weekly Step Easy to Forget

Once a week, use the oil dropper or Midwest Plus Aerosol spray to lubricate the handpiece or attachment chuck and the operatory coupler O-rings specifically not just the general body of the instrument. Dentsply Sirona's own instructions specify doing this before the main lubrication step below, so that any excess oil gets properly expelled rather than trapped inside.

Why This Step Gets Skipped

It's easy to treat the daily clean-and-lubricate cycle as the whole routine and forget that the chuck and coupler O-rings have their own separate weekly requirement. A handpiece that's otherwise well cared for can still develop chuck problems if this specific step is the one that keeps getting missed.

Step 4: Lubricate

Fit the appropriate nozzle onto the Midwest Plus Aerosol Spray can.
Holding the can upright, insert the nozzle fully into the handpiece, attachment, or motor. For fixed back-end handpieces or motors, like the Quiet-Air, place the tip of the nozzle into the drive air tube specifically.
Cover the head with a paper or lint-free towel and spray for 2 full seconds.
If a large amount of debris appears on the towel, repeat the 2-second spray.

Step 5: Expel the Excess

Connect the handpiece to the appropriate maintenance adapter, without a bur inserted.
Cover the head with a paper or lint-free towel.
Expel with air for a minimum of 30 seconds, or until no more oil appears on the towel.

This step matters more than it might seem; oil left inside the handpiece after lubrication is exactly the kind of excess that can contribute to the heat-related issues covered in the manufacturer's safety warnings.

Step 6: Package and Sterilize

Wipe off any remaining excess lubricant with a clean paper or lint-free towel
Place the instrument in a sterilization pouch
Sterilize in a steam sterilizer; both gravity and dynamic air removal sterilizers are acceptable

Exact sterilization parameters	Refer to the item-specific Instructions for Use rather than assuming one setting fits every Midwest instrument

If You're Using Midwest Automate Instead

The sequence is the same through Step 3; from there, position the handpiece onto the appropriate adapter, close the door, and press Start. Steps 4 and 5 lubrication and excess expulsion happen automatically inside the unit. Once the cycle completes, proceed to Step 6 exactly as in the manual process.

If a handpiece has been sitting unused for a while, run through the full six-step routine before returning it to service rather than assuming it's still ready

Mistakes That Undermine This Routine

Spraying, wiping, or soaking the handpiece in disinfectant or alcohol instead of using water and Midwest Plus Cleaner
Using a chloride-containing hand or dish soap
Skipping the weekly chuck and coupler O-ring lubrication because the daily cycle feels like enough
Cooling a hot handpiece with water instead of stopping use and having it assessed
Rushing the Step 5 expulsion time below the specified 30-second minimum
Attempting your own chuck or turbine repair instead of routing it to an authorized Midwest repair center

What Actually Extends a Quiet-Air's Working Life

Given how directly Dentsply Sirona ties worn or poorly maintained handpieces to a documented burn risk, the maintenance routine here isn't just about performance it's a safety procedure with performance as a side benefit. Hitting the weekly chuck maintenance step without fail, expelling excess oil for the full 30 seconds, and genuinely examining the handpiece for damage before each use are the three habits that matter most.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I substitute a generic handpiece lubricant for Midwest Plus Aerosol Spray?

Dentsply Sirona's own guidance specifies using only Midwest maintenance products; straying from that isn't something the manufacturer's documented procedure supports.

What happens if I skip the weekly chuck maintenance step?

It's specifically designed to keep the chuck and coupler O-rings functioning properly between the more frequent daily cycles. Skipping it is a common, and avoidable, contributor to chuck problems that show up later as bur retention issues.
