Dentsply Sirona's Operating Instructions for the Stylus Plus run to more than sixty pages, and the conditioning section alone covers automated cleaning, manual cleaning, mechanical maintenance, push-button chuck care, and sterilization as five genuinely distinct procedures. Most of that detail never reaches the sterilization room, because nobody has time to read a full manual between patients.

This playbook condenses it into a routine your team can actually run, in the manufacturer's own sequence and timing, including two intervals that are easy to get wrong: mechanical maintenance at least twice a day, and push-button chuck care weekly, not at every cleaning cycle.

Three care rhythms, three intervals: some steps happen after every patient, some twice a day, and one only once a week.

< 38°C

maximum water temperature for manual cleaning

10 sec

minimum brushing time, manual cleaning

135°C

sterilization temperature, 10 min wrapped

≥ 50 ml/min

minimum coolant water content

Before the First Patient: Start-Up and Daily Preparation

Confirm operating pressures. The handpiece only reaches full power at its specified operating pressures; have a service technician check with a star tester between the supply hose and quick coupling if you are unsure.
Sterilize before first use and after any longer break in use.
Prior to starting the work day, purge the water and air channels for 30 seconds.
Before each patient: purge channels for 30 seconds again, attach the turbine, insert the bur, set cooling water to more than 50 ml/min, use filtered water only (below 50 µm), and check the nozzles for blockages or lime deposits.

After Every Patient: The Full Treatment-Session Sequence

Purge the water and air channels for 30 seconds at the treatment center.
Remove the bur with tweezers.
Pre-disinfect directly at the treatment center: spray the surface with disinfectant, then wipe it off with a cloth. Dentsply Sirona names CAVICIDE and CAVIWIPES as examples usable in the USA and Canada.
Remove the handpiece and transport it to the hygiene room in a suitable container.
Condition it (automated preferred; manual only in exceptional cases per national/local regulations).
Spray the turbine (manual mechanical maintenance).
Sterilize the turbine and accessories.

Automated vs. Manual Conditioning: Which Route Applies

AUTOMATED (PREFERRED ROUTE)

Use equipment approved by its manufacturer for dental instruments, compliant with EN ISO 15883-1 (example cycle: 95°C for 10 minutes holding time)
Quick couplings are excluded from automated cleaning
Check that the handpiece is clean under good lighting (min. 500 lux, color rendering index min. 80 Ra); repeat if still dirty
Blow out with max. 3 bar, then complete manual mechanical and chuck maintenance before packing

MANUAL (EXCEPTIONAL CASES ONLY)

Permitted only if national/regional regulations allow it
Condition immediately, or at the latest, one hour after treatment
Never clean in an ultrasound bath. Never immerse in disinfectant solution.
Brush under running water below 38°C for at least 10 seconds, flush drive channels with spray, clean/disinfect spray channels, blow out 2.5–3 bar for at least 10 seconds, then thermally disinfect or sterilize unwrapped

Mechanical Maintenance: The Twice-Daily Habit Most Teams Skip

This is the step with the tightest, most specific interval in the whole document, and it is easy to underdo without realizing it.

At least every noon and evening, not just once a day.
Prior to each sterilization.
After every thermal disinfection that does not include integrated maintenance.
During any longer preparation exceeding 10 minutes.

Confirm the spray adapter is disinfected and its O-rings are intact.
Fit the correct adapter for your backend (Sirona, KaVo, NSK MachLite, or Midwest).
Insert the handpiece fully and hold it in place.
Spray for 1 to 2 seconds, holding the can upright, using only Midwest Plus Aerosol Spray.
Wipe any spray that comes out with a disinfection cloth, and repeat until the spray runs clear.

Push-Button Chuck Care: A Weekly Step, Not an Every-Cycle One

Unlike mechanical maintenance, chuck care runs on a different, longer interval: at least once a week, using Midwest Plus Aerosol Spray to remove deposits from the clamping system.

Confirm the handpiece is already cleaned and disinfected.
Press the handpiece head, with the chuck, firmly against the spray can nozzle.
Spray the chuck for 1 to 2 seconds, can upright.
Wipe away any spray that emerges with a disinfection cloth.

Sterilization: Exact Temperatures, Times and the Burn-Risk Warning

Article type	Holding time at 135°C (275°F)	Drying time
Wrapped instruments	10 minutes	30 minutes
Unwrapped instruments	3.5 minutes	0–1 minute

Overpressure: 2.13 bar (30.89 psi) at 135°C (275°F).
Gravity displacement steam sterilizers are permitted.
Never exceed 140°C (284°F), even during the drying phase.
Remove the handpiece from the steriliser immediately after the cycle; it will be hot and can cause burns.
Never immerse the handpiece in cold water to speed cooling, since Dentsply Sirona warns this will damage it.
Store all handpieces protected from contamination, and sterilize again once a storage period has elapsed.

Nozzle Care and the Monthly Chuck Test

Two maintenance tasks run on their own separate schedules, outside the daily cleaning cycle.

Nozzle maintenance (as needed, hard-water areas especially). Lime deposits can constrict or block the cooling spray nozzles. Run a disinfected cleaning wire through the openings regularly, then run the handpiece briefly with cooling spray.
FG clamping system test (monthly). Insert a chuck tester and tighten until the marking ring appears (withdrawal force: 22 N). If the tester slides out before the ring appears, the chuck is defective: stop using the product and have Midwest replace the clamping system.

Your Maintenance Toolkit: What to Keep in Stock

Midwest Plus Aerosol Spray (500 ml can, REF 38 00 80)
Chuck tester (REF 33 27 793)
Cleaning wire for spray nozzles (REF 24 00 232)
Spray adapter, matched to your backend type (Sirona, KaVo, NSK MachLite or Midwest)
Soft, clean, disinfected brush for manual cleaning
Paper/plastic composite sterilization packaging

A Daily, Weekly and Monthly Rhythm, Plus a Printable Checklist

Pulling together every interval from the Operating Instructions into one schedule:

☐ After every patient: purge channels, remove bur, pre-disinfect, condition, sterilize

☐ At least noon and evening: mechanical maintenance (spray adapter, 1–2 seconds)

☐ Prior to each sterilization: mechanical maintenance repeated

☐ Weekly: push-button chuck care with Midwest Plus Aerosol Spray

☐ As needed (hard water): clean nozzles with the disinfected cleaning wire

☐ Monthly: FG clamping system test with a chuck tester (22 N withdrawal force)

☐ Every 6 months: replace the compression ring (Sirona coupling F) to maintain the anti-retraction valve

☐ Every 3 months: replace the felt strip on quick coupling F if oil-laden return air looks soiled

What Practices Say About the Stylus Plus Routine

★★★★★

“We had no idea chuck care ran on a weekly schedule separate from daily cleaning. Fixing that alone resolved a stiffness issue we had been living with.”

— Dental Assistant, general practice

★★★★★

“The monthly chuck tester check is now part of our routine. It caught a failing clamping system before it became a chairside problem.”

— Clinic Manager

★★★★★

“Learning not to immerse the handpiece in cold water after sterilizing explained some wear we could never quite place. Small detail, real difference.”

— Sterilization Coordinator
