A handpiece engineered around dynamic speed control gives you an unusually honest noise floor to work from. When a Stylus Plus starts sounding different, it is rarely dramatic at first, just a little louder, a little rougher, a little less certain than the week before. Catching that early is the whole point of this guide.

Every safety statement and diagnostic step here comes directly from Dentsply Sirona's published Operating Instructions for the Stylus Plus

Dynamic speed control was built to limit free speed and protect bearings. A rising noise floor is often that very system reporting the wear it was designed to catch.

Five Signals a Stylus Plus Sends Before a Real Fault

Sound

Dynamic speed control exists to keep this instrument quiet under normal conditions. A rising whine or new rattle is one of its earliest and most reliable fault signals.

Cutting power

Reduced cutting power often traces back to driving air pressure outside the 2.7 to 3.0 bar range, not the handpiece itself.

Bur retention

A bur that will not seat, releases unexpectedly, or feels loose points toward the push-button clamping system.

Spray

Coolant content below 50 ml/min risks overheating the preparation site and is frequently a nozzle-blockage issue rather than a mechanical fault.

Light

A dim or absent LED is often a seating or orientation issue, not a failed component.

The Rule That Overrides Everything Else

STRAIGHT FROM DENTSPLY SIRONA'S OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

Discontinue use immediately in case of malfunction, unusual or different sounds, or damage
Damaged handpieces may cause injury. Notify the dental dealer or the manufacturer
The device must not be started without a bur inserted, and a bur must be inserted at least 10 mm and clamped securely before use
Do not pull a patient's cheek back with a rotating handpiece; this can actuate the push-button and risk burning the oral mucosa

Start Here: The 60-Second Triage Table

Symptom	Safe first check (bur removed, off the hose)	If unresolved
Louder than usual	Confirm mechanical maintenance has not been skipped recently	Stop and send for bench inspection
Weak cutting power	Confirm driving air pressure (2.7–3.0 bar) with a star tester if available	Service if pressure is confirmed correct
Bur will not seat or release	Check the push-button moves freely; confirm bur meets ISO 1797-1, 1.59–1.60 mm shaft	Chuck service if a fresh bur still slips
Weak coolant spray	Check nozzles for limescale blockage; clean with the cleaning wire if needed	Service if spray stays below 50 ml/min
Light dim or absent	Remove the LED and reinsert rotated 180°, per Dentsply Sirona's instructions	Service if light still fails
Fails the monthly chuck test	Stop using the handpiece immediately	Have Midwest replace the clamping system

Noise and Bearing Wear: Reading the Signal Correctly

Because dynamic speed control specifically limits free speed to protect bearings, a Stylus Plus getting louder over time is frequently reporting bearing wear, not a random fluke. Dentsply Sirona's own service-life guidance supports this: moving parts have a typical service life of 3 years, though actual wear depends on use, sterilization frequency and maintenance.

Confirm maintenance history first. Skipped mechanical maintenance (twice daily) or chuck care (weekly) is the most common, most fixable cause of rising noise.
Compare against the 3-year moving-parts estimate as a planning signal, not a strict deadline.
Do not wait for it to worsen. Early bearing wear is a simpler repair than advanced wear.

Cutting Power Loss: Check the Air Supply Before the Handpiece

Dentsply Sirona specifies driving air pressure of 2.7 to 3.0 bar (39 to 43.5 psi), flowing, dry, and clean, with driving air consumption of 48 ± 5 Nl/min. A handpiece running outside that range can look weak even when it is mechanically sound.

Have the operating pressures checked with a star tester placed between the supply hose and quick coupling.
Confirm the bur meets specification: 1.59–1.60 mm shaft diameter per ISO 1797-1, maximum total length 21 mm, maximum working diameter 2.1 mm per ISO 2157.
Only after both check out, treat persistent weak cutting as a sign that the rotor or bearings need bench inspection.

Coolant Spray Problems: The 50 ml/min Threshold

Dentsply Sirona's instructions are explicit on this point: insufficient cooling leads to overheating of the preparation site and damage to tooth substance, and the water content in the spray must be set to more than 50 ml/min.

Use filtered water only, below 50 µm, per the manufacturer's instructions.
Check the nozzles for blockages or lime deposits before each patient, and clean with the disinfected cleaning wire as needed.
Never work with inadequate coolant, even briefly, given the explicit overheating and tooth-damage warning.

Bur and Chuck Problems: Confirming Specification and Retention

Dentsply Sirona's caution here is specific: a loose or partially removed bur instrument can detach itself from the head or break off, which may cause injury. Use the handpiece only if the bur is inserted at least 10 mm and clamped securely.

Check that push-button movement is free before inserting a bur.
Insert the bur fully and pull to confirm it is firmly attached.
If a fresh, compliant bur still slips, this is a chuck-mechanism fault, and it is the exact condition the monthly chuck test is designed to catch early.

Light Problems: An LED Fix You Can Try Before Assuming Failure

DENTSPLY SIRONA'S DOCUMENTED LED FIX

If the LED does not light up after a lamp or coupling check, remove the LED and reinsert it rotated 180° around its own axis

The Stop-Use List and Escalation Ladder

Level 1: Chairside team. Run the safe checks above, confirm maintenance history, log the result.
Level 2: Supplier or Dentsply Sirona. If within the 2-year warranty, start here with purchase details.
Level 3: Specialist repair. For out-of-warranty handpieces, or any bearing-related fault, send for bench inspection. Never attempt a bearing swap yourself.
Level 4: Retirement. If repair is uneconomic given the handpiece's age and service-life estimate, retire and replace.

What Practices Say About Faster Fault-Finding

★★★★★

“Checking our air pressure with a star tester before assuming the handpiece had failed saved us an unnecessary shipment entirely.”

— Office Manager

★★★★★

“The LED rotation fix solved what we thought was a dead light in about ten seconds.”

— Dental Assistant

★★★★★

“Knowing to connect rising noise to bearing wear, rather than just "it's getting old," helped us catch a problem early instead of waiting for it to fail mid-appointment.”

— Clinic Manager, general dentistry practice

Midwest Stylus Plus Troubleshooting FAQs

Why is my Stylus Plus getting louder?

Because dynamic speed control is designed to limit free speed and protect bearings, rising noise often signals bearing wear. Confirm maintenance history is current, then arrange service if noise persists.

Why is my cutting power weak?

Check driving air pressure first; Dentsply Sirona specifies 2.7 to 3.0 bar. If pressure is correct and a compliant bur is fitted, the rotor or bearings may need bench inspection.
