Dentsply Sirona's 25-watt (fixed backend) and 20-watt (coupler) power ratings for the Tradition Pro describe what the ceramic-bearing turbine is capable of when it's properly maintained not a number that holds regardless of how the handpiece is treated. The official Midwest Maintenance Guide lays out exactly what proper maintenance looks like, and it applies to the Tradition Pro the same way it applies across Dentsply Sirona's broader Midwest handpiece range.

The Six-Step Manual Routine

Flush the handpiece's water and air lines by running it on the unit with water for 20 to 30 seconds, then remove the bur using safe methods.
Remove the handpiece from its coupler or hose.
Clean the exterior with Midwest Plus Cleaner, scrubbing under running water with a soft sponge to remove external debris and bioburden, paying close attention to the fiber optic lens on FO models so it doesn't become obstructed.
Place the appropriate nozzle on the Midwest Plus Aerosol Spray, hold the can upright, insert the nozzle fully into the handpiece (or into the drive air tube for fixed-backend units), cover the head with a paper or lint-free towel, and spray for 2 full seconds.
Connect the handpiece (without a bur) to the appropriate maintenance adapter, cover the head with a paper towel, and expel with air for a minimum of 30 seconds, or until no more oil appears.
Wipe off excess lubricant with a clean paper or lint-free towel, place the instrument in a sterilization pouch, and sterilize in a steam sterilizer.

The automated version folds steps 4 and 5 into a single cycle: position the handpiece on the Automate adapter, close the door, and press start. Proceed to the sterilization step once the cycle completes.

The Weekly Habit That Protects the Chuck

Separately from the per-use cycle above, Dentsply Sirona specifies weekly chuck maintenance: using an oil dropper or Midwest Plus Aerosol Spray to lubricate the handpiece's chuck and the operatory coupler O-rings once per week, performed before the regular lubrication step so excess oil has a chance to be expelled.

Why this matters more with a power lever chuck

The power lever design is built around smooth, low-effort bur changes. Missing the weekly lubrication step is one of the fastest ways that smoothness degrades, well before the turbine itself shows any sign of wear.

What You Can Never Use on This Handpiece

Never Use	Use Instead
Disinfectant sprays or wipes	Midwest Plus Cleaner with water
Alcohol of any kind	Midwest Plus Cleaner with water
Hand or dish soaps containing chloride	Midwest Plus Cleaner with water
Ultrasonic cleaning baths	Manual scrubbing with a soft sponge
Water to cool a hot handpiece	Powering down and allowing natural cooling

Sterilization Basics

Both gravity and dynamic air removal steam sterilizers are acceptable
Always check the item-specific instructions for use for your exact Tradition Pro configuration, since parameters can vary between fixed-backend and coupler versions
Keep the handpiece in its sterilization pouch until it's actually time to use it

A Routine That Scales With Your Day

Before the First Patient

Examine the handpiece for visible damage
Confirm the chuck activates smoothly and holds a test bur securely

Between Every Patient

Run the full six-step manual routine, or the equivalent Automate cycle, in full not an abbreviated version on busy days
Never apply pressure to the chuck release mechanism while the handpiece is rotating

At the End of the Day

Confirm every Tradition Pro in rotation has gone through a complete cycle, not just a wipe-down
Store sterilized handpieces in their pouches, in a dry, dust-free location

Matching Maintenance to Your Specific Configuration

Because the Tradition Pro ships in fixed-backend, K-Coupler, and Sirona-coupler versions, with push-button or power lever chucks, and with or without fiber optics, it's worth confirming your exact configuration before assuming maintenance steps are identical across every Tradition Pro in your practice. The core six-step process is the same, but adapter fittings and spray nozzle attachments differ by backend type.

What Actually Extends This Handpiece's Working Life

Two habits do more for a Tradition Pro's longevity than anything else: never skipping the weekly chuck lubrication, and never substituting a disinfectant wipe for Midwest Plus Cleaner out of convenience on a busy day. Both failures are easy to make, and both directly undercut the ceramic bearing set's documented advantage over older Tradition generations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is weekly chuck maintenance really separate from between-patient cleaning?

Yes, Dentsply Sirona documents it as its own step, performed once a week and specifically before the regular lubrication process, not folded into the between-patient routine.

Can I substitute a different lubricant if I run out of Midwest Plus Aerosol Spray?

Stick with Midwest-branded maintenance products where possible; they're the ones referenced in Dentsply Sirona's own official maintenance documentation, and substituting an unverified product risks both performance and warranty standing.
