Read This Before the Fault Table

Dentsply Sirona's own handpiece safety guidance is specific: worn, poorly maintained, misused, abused, or damaged handpieces can generate friction-induced heat capable of causing serious burns to patients and staff. That single sentence is why every symptom below gets treated as worth investigating properly rather than working around a Tradition Pro fault isn't just a cutting-performance issue; it's a safety variable.

Fault Lookup Table

Symptom	Likely Cause	First Check
Chuck needs excessive force or won't hold a bur	Missed weekly chuck lubrication, or mechanism wear	Check when chuck/coupler O-rings were last lubricated
Reduced cutting power under load	Air pressure loss, or ceramic bearing wear	Confirm air pressure reads close to 43 psi
Spray uneven or weak at one or more ports	Localized port blockage	Inspect each spray port individually, not just overall flow
Noise or vibration changes	Ceramic bearing wear, or a bent/worn bur	Rule out the bur first, then test briefly outside the mouth
Handpiece won't seat on coupler/backend	Connection wear, or wrong configuration match	Confirm backend type matches your delivery system
Unusual heat during use	Friction from bearing wear, or a maintenance lapse	Stop use — treat as a priority, not a minor issue

Step-by-Step: Chuck Feels Stiff or Won't Hold a Bur

Confirm when the weekly chuck and coupler O-ring lubrication was last performed.
Apply the documented weekly lubrication using an oil dropper or Midwest Plus Aerosol Spray if it's overdue.
Test with a known-compliant bur to rule out the bur itself as the cause.
If the chuck push-button or power lever still needs unusual force or still doesn't hold the bur securely after lubrication, the mechanism likely needs professional service.

Step-by-Step: Reduced Cutting Power

Check drive air pressure against the 43 psi specification.
Inspect tubing for crimping or leaks along its length.
Confirm the backend connection fixed, K-Coupler, or Sirona-coupler is fully and correctly seated.
Clean the handpiece per the standard routine in case debris is restricting airflow.
If power remains low after these checks, the ceramic-bearing turbine likely needs professional assessment.

Step-by-Step: Spray Looks Uneven

Remove the bur and run the handpiece briefly, observing each spray port individually rather than judging overall volume.
Clean the exterior and spray area with Midwest Plus Cleaner per the standard routine.
Re-test: localized blockages often clear with a thorough standard cleaning cycle.
If specific ports remain blocked after cleaning, professional nozzle service is the next step.

User-Safe Checks

Examining the handpiece for visible damage before each use
Confirming the chuck grips a known-compliant bur securely
Running the standard Midwest Plus Cleaner routine and weekly chuck lubrication on schedule
Checking air pressure with a standard gauge
Observing spray output at each individual port

Not a user-safe check

Applying pressure to the chuck release mechanism while the handpiece is rotating, or attempting any internal disassembly of the turbine. Dentsply Sirona directs service to an authorized repair center using genuine Midwest parts.

When to Stop Using the Handpiece Immediately

Any unusual heat during or after normal use
The chuck won't release, or releases unexpectedly during rotation
Noise or vibration that wasn't present before and doesn't resolve with basic checks
Visible damage found during the required pre-use examination

When Professional Repair Becomes Necessary

Chuck issues persist after confirming lubrication is current and testing with a compliant bur
Cutting power doesn't recover after checking air pressure, tubing, and the backend connection
Spray stays uneven at specific ports after a full standard cleaning
Any heat, noise, or vibration change that doesn't have an obvious, resolved cause

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a slightly stiff chuck always a sign of damage?

Not necessarily. Check when weekly chuck lubrication was last performed first, since this documented step directly affects how smoothly the chuck operates.

My handpiece lost power only on certain burs. Is that a handpiece fault?

Possibly not. Confirm the bur is a compliant regular or short-shank carbide or diamond bur before suspecting the turbine, since an incompatible or worn bur can mimic a power-loss fault.
