Before First Use

TORQTECH attachments are not sterilized before shipping Morita's instructions require autoclaving before the very first use, the same as every use afterward.

Immediately After Each Patient

1	Remove the bur, point, cup, or brush. Then turn on the water supply and run the handpiece for 20 seconds to flush the internal water and spray lines.

2	Wipe down the whole handpiece. Use gauze dampened with tap water or a protein anticoagulant agent, from the motor connection to the head, to remove visible contaminants.

3	Clean within 2 hours if you can't clean immediately. If cleaning has to wait, spray a neutral, foamless protein anticoagulant agent over the handpiece first one suitable for aluminum and brass.

VERIFIED NEVER USE ULTRASONIC OR IMMERSION CLEANING

Morita's instructions are explicit: do not clean TORQTECH attachments with ultrasonic cleaning or immersion cleaning devices, and never immerse or wipe them with functional water (acidic electrolyzed water, strong alkaline solution, ozone water) or medical agents containing glutaral or chlorides. These cause metal corrosion or leave residue that damages the attachment.

Manual Cleaning and Disinfection, Step by Step

Rinse: clean parts in running water with a toothbrush, clear the spray hole(s) with the spray hole wire, then rinse again.
Clean (WL-clean): attach the adapter, insert it into the connection end, and spray 3 times for 2 seconds each. Set aside and wait at least 1 minute for the cleaning agent to work.
Disinfect (WL-cid): attach the adapter and spray for approximately 3 to 5 seconds. Wait approximately 1 to 2 minutes for the disinfectant to work.
Dry (WL-dry or WL-Blow): blow compressed air through the connection end for approximately 3 seconds.
Wipe: wipe the whole handpiece with a microfiber cloth dampened with mikrozid AF, FD322, or rubbing alcohol.

Automated Cleaning (Washer-Disinfector)

Morita specifies washer-disinfectors conforming to ISO 15883-1. A documented example setup: Miele G7881 Vario TD, using neodisher MediClean detergent at 0.3–0.5% concentration and neodisher MediKlar rinse at 0.03–0.05%, with A0 = 3000 recommended for thermal disinfection.

Place the handpiece in a proper handpiece holder before starting the cycle cleaning without one risks corrosion or clogged air/water lines from impurities.
Expel remaining moisture with compressed air after the cycle completes.
Never leave a handpiece inside the washer-disinfector after the cycle ends.
If your area has hard water, use deionized water for the final rinse to prevent scale buildup. Print Shipping Label

Lubrication: Timing Is Everything

Morita requires MORITA MULTI SPRAY exclusively no other maintenance spray is approved. Lubrication happens after cleaning and disinfection, before autoclaving, and after every patient use.

Spray duration: approximately 2 seconds at the chuck and 2 seconds at the connection end, depending on the model.
Never exceed 5 seconds of continuous spraying. Moisture inside the handpiece can freeze, and operating it in that condition can damage the ball bearings this is a documented, specific warning, not a general caution.
Remove excess oil after lubricating: run the handpiece, head pointed down, for about 30 seconds, then wipe off any oil that appears on the outside with gauze.
Blow out remaining moisture: use an air blow gun or a three-way syringe for 20 to 30 seconds at the connection.

Sterilization: Exact Limits, Not Estimates

Sterilizer Type	Temperature	Time	Drying Time
Pre-vacuum (Class B)	134°C (273.2°F)	3 minutes	10 minutes
Gravity type	134°C (273.2°F)	min. 6 minutes	min. 10 minutes
Gravity type (alt.)	121°C (249.8°F)	min. 60 minutes	—

Never exceed 135°C (275°F). Above 137°C (278.6°F), Morita documents discoloration or malfunction as the direct result.
Place the handpiece horizontally in the autoclave; if positioned upright, the head must be at the top.
Avoid contact with the heat source or chamber wall to prevent O-ring damage from concentrated heat.
Use only sterilization pouches conforming to ISO 11607 and avoid pouches containing PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) adhesive, since it can seep into the handpiece and leave a residue that blocks rotation or water delivery, even in ISO-conformant pouches.Track Your Repair

The Daily Chuck Grip Test

Morita's instructions call for this test whenever grip strength is suspected of weakening, or at minimum once a day:

Press the push button and insert the chuck grip tester straight in until it lightly touches the chuck mechanism.
Pull the tester slowly. Seeing a groove means grip strength is normal stop pulling as soon as the groove appears.
If no groove appears and the tester comes all the way out, grip strength has weakened: lubricate the chuck and retest. If it still fails, replace the cartridge.

Quarterly Maintenance and Inspection

Morita specifies a 3-month inspection interval covering:

Motor connection
Retention of burs, tips, and PMTC attachments
Cap looseness
Handpiece rotation, spray, and light
Overheating

Storage

Operating environment: 10°C to 40°C, 30% to 75% humidity, without condensation.
Storage environment: -10°C to 70°C, 10% to 85% humidity, without condensation.
Avoid extended direct sunlight exposure.
Before extended storage, autoclave the attachment and store it in a clean, dry place.

Extending the Life of Your TORQTECH Attachment

Morita rates TORQTECH's useful life at 7 years from installation, provided it's regularly and properly inspected and maintained that figure assumes the routine above, not occasional attention. For the warning signs that show up when this routine slips, see our companion piece, the TORQTECH Common Problems & Troubleshooting Guide, and our general dental handpiece repair and maintenance service overview.
