Warning Signs at a Glance

Urgency is marked with filled circles ●●● means stop use immediately, ●○○ means it can wait for a scheduled check.

Warning Sign	Most Likely Cause	Urgency

Morita's Own Diagnostic Trees

▪ Poor Water Delivery or No Spray

This is documented as a specific branching check, not a guess:

Take the handpiece off the motor and step on the foot pedal. Does water come out of the motor joint?
If no: the issue is on the motor side refer to the motor's own Instructions for Use.
If yes: check the O-ring on the motor joint. Replace it if worn or damaged and coat it with oil. If the O-ring is fine, clean the air and water holes on the handpiece, and on light-equipped models, remove and clean the water filter.

▪ Poor Rotation or Speed Reduction

Make sure the motor is properly connected. Remove the handpiece from the motor and step on the foot control does the motor run?
If the motor doesn't run: refer to the motor's own Instructions for Use.
If the motor runs: reconnect the handpiece correctly and test again. If the bur still doesn't turn, the handpiece needs professional repair.

▪ Cannot Insert a Bur, Point, Tip, or Brush

Lubricate the chuck, then try a new bur, point, tip, or brush to see if the problem resolves.
If it doesn't resolve, the handpiece needs professional repair rather than continued forcing.

▪ Overheating

Confirm the main power switch is on and the main air and water valves are open before assuming an internal fault.
Check that cooling air and spray flow meet documented minimums, and confirm the motor itself is operating properly.

VERIFIED STOP IMMEDIATELY IF ANY OF THESE HAPPEN DURING USE

Morita's manual lists specific in-use events that call for immediately stopping: the bur becomes detached while drilling, the handpiece is hot, rotation speed reduces, or there's abnormal vibration or noise. These aren't judgment calls to weigh mid-procedure , they're documented stop conditions.

The Documented Pre-Use Inspection

Morita specifies running this exact 9-point check before every use, not just when something seems wrong:

Cap, body, and screw tightness
No gap between cap and head
Light guide isn't chipped, cracked, or sticking out (light models)
No conspicuous corrosion around the chuck opening
No dirt or scratches on the joint
No bent or deformed components
Motor connects properly; runs smoothly; spray emitted normally; no leaks; no abnormal vibration or noise; no overheating
Run for approximately 10 seconds and confirm no speed reduction, vibration, or noise
Immediately after, touch the head, push button, cap, and body to confirm no heat Print Shipping Label

User-Safe Checks You Can Do Chairside

Follow the documented diagnostic tree for your symptom rather than guessing Morita's manual provides a specific path for water delivery, rotation, and insertion issues.
Run the daily chuck grip test before assuming a bur-retention issue is something else.
Isolate the motor from the attachment by testing the motor alone before assuming the TORQTECH attachment itself has failed.
Check flow rates against documented minimums before assuming overheating points to a bearing failure.

For a broader walkthrough of these checks across handpiece brands generally, see our guide to troubleshooting common dental handpiece issues.

When to Stop Using the Attachment

The handpiece is hot, rotation speed reduces, or there's abnormal vibration or noise all documented, explicit stop conditions.
A bur, tip, cup, or brush becomes detached during use.
The cap, body, or screw is loose.
The head or body is bent, warped, or otherwise deformed.

When Professional Repair Becomes Necessary

The bur doesn't turn even after confirming the motor runs and the handpiece is connected correctly.
Poor insertion doesn't resolve after chuck lubrication and trying a new bur, point, tip, or brush.
The chuck grip test keeps failing even after lubrication and a cartridge replacement.
Any documented stop condition occurs and doesn't resolve with the corresponding documented check.

At that point, it's a job for a certified technician rather than a chairside fix. Our TORQTECH Repair & Service Guide walks through the full repair process, and Repair.Dental's dental handpiece repair service covers exactly this category of fault for Morita attachments.

What Practices Are Saying

“Following the actual water-delivery diagnostic instead of guessing saved us from disassembling the wrong thing entirely.” — Dental Assistant, General Practice

“The 9-point pre-use check became second nature fast, and it's caught small issues before they became appointment-day problems.” — Office Manager, Multi-Chair Clinic

Frequently Asked Questions

Q Water isn't coming out where do I start?

A Remove the handpiece from the motor and step on the foot pedal. If water comes from the motor joint, check the O-ring and water filter on the handpiece. If it doesn't, the issue is on the motor side.

Q The bur won't turn is it the motor or the attachment?

A Remove the handpiece and test the motor alone with the foot control. If the motor runs but the bur still doesn't turn once reconnected, the attachment needs professional repair
