NSK EX Series Maintenance Guide

A Practical Care Routine for Your NSK EX Series

A well-maintained handpiece should be part of your practice's normal workflow—not something that receives attention only after it develops a problem.

With the NSK EX Series, regular cleaning, lubrication, reprocessing and careful handling can help protect the handpiece from avoidable damage.

Always follow the latest NSK instructions for your particular EX Series model.

Start With the Bur

Once the procedure is finished, remove the bur before beginning the maintenance process.

Then examine the chuck area.

Look for:

Debris
Unusual movement
Difficulty releasing the bur
Changes in chuck operation

If something feels different, don't force the mechanism.

Clean First, Lubricate Second

Lubrication should be performed as part of the manufacturer's recommended maintenance procedure.

Cleaning first helps prevent contamination from being carried further into the handpiece.

Use:

The recommended cleaning method
Appropriate NSK-approved products
The manufacturer's lubrication procedure

Avoid experimenting with household oils or unapproved cleaning chemicals.

Give the Head and Chuck Extra Attention

These areas are exposed to debris during clinical use.

During routine care, inspect:

Head

Chuck

Bur opening

Spray outlets

External surfaces

Do not use sharp objects or excessive force to remove contamination unless specifically permitted by the manufacturer.

Sterilization Is Not a Substitute for Cleaning

Proper reprocessing should follow the manufacturer's instructions and your practice's infection-control protocol.

The general workflow should be treated as separate stages:

Cleaning → Lubrication → Preparation → Sterilization → Drying → Storage

Use the current NSK documentation for your exact EX Series handpiece and sterilization equipment.

The “Know Your Normal” Method

One of the easiest maintenance habits is simply knowing how your handpiece normally behaves.

Before a busy clinical day, pay attention to:

Sound

Is it operating normally?

Vibration

Does it feel the same as usual?

Chuck

Does the bur lock and release correctly?

Spray

Is cooling consistent?

Temperature

Does it remain within its normal operating behavior?

A small change is often easier to address than a complete failure.

Protect It Between Procedures

Care doesn't end after sterilization.

Store the handpiece where it won't be:

Dropped
Knocked against instruments
Compressed
Contaminated after reprocessing

Accidental impact is an avoidable source of handpiece damage.

A Simple EX Series Maintenance Checklist

Cleaning	No visible contamination
Chuck	Normal retention/release
Lubrication	Completed according to NSK instructions
Spray	Consistent

When Care Becomes Repair

Maintenance can reduce preventable wear, but it cannot restore a physically worn bearing or damaged internal mechanism.

If your EX Series remains noisy, hot, rough, unstable or difficult to operate after proper maintenance, professional NSK handpiece repair may be necessary.
