NSK EX Series Troubleshooting: What Is Your Handpiece Telling You?

You don't always need to know which internal component has failed.

Start with the symptom.

The EX Series is behaving differently? Identify what changed, rule out the simple causes, and then decide whether professional repair is needed.

“It Has Started Making a Clicking Sound”

A new clicking sound deserves attention.

Possible sources include:

Internal mechanical wear
Bearing deterioration
Contamination
Drive-related problems

If the sound continues after the recommended maintenance procedure, don't keep operating the handpiece in the hope that it disappears.

“It Feels Rough While Running”

A handpiece that no longer feels smooth may have developing mechanical wear.

First check the obvious factors, including the bur and connection.

If the roughness remains, professional diagnosis can determine whether the internal mechanism is involved.

“The Vibration Is Getting Worse”

Increasing vibration isn't something to simply adapt to.

Possible causes include:

Bearing wear

Internal drive problems

Impact damage

Bur-related issues

If vibration is severe or suddenly appears, remove the handpiece from clinical use.

“The Bur Is Difficult to Remove”

A stiff or abnormal chuck can be caused by contamination, wear or mechanical damage.

Do not force the button or use excessive pressure.

Follow the manufacturer's approved cleaning procedure.

If the mechanism still doesn't operate normally, have the chuck professionally inspected.

“The Bur Doesn't Feel Secure”

This is more serious than an inconvenient button.

If the bur can move unexpectedly or isn't retained correctly:

Stop using the handpiece.

Possible causes may involve the chuck or retention mechanism and require professional service.

“The Handpiece Is Getting Hot”

Unusual heat can point toward increased friction or a cooling problem.

Possible areas include:

Bearings
Lubrication
Internal mechanical components
Water/cooling system

If the temperature is abnormal, stop clinical use and arrange an inspection.

“Performance Has Dropped”

Poor performance can have several causes.

Before assuming an internal handpiece fault, check:

Bur condition → Connection → Drive source → Maintenance → Handpiece

If everything else is functioning normally and the EX Series still performs poorly, internal service may be required.

“The Water Spray Has Changed”

A weak or inconsistent spray does not necessarily mean the handpiece itself has failed.

Check the dental unit's water delivery and connection first.

If the supply is normal but the problem remains isolated to the EX Series, the handpiece's spray system may need inspection.

“I Dropped It, But It Looks Fine”

Appearance isn't enough to clear a precision handpiece after impact.

Test for changes in:

Vibration
Sound
Bur retention
Performance
Temperature
Water delivery

If anything has changed, professional inspection is recommended before returning it to clinical use.

EX Series Symptom Guide

Symptom	Possible Source	Next Step
Clicking	Internal mechanism	Inspect
Grinding	Bearings/drive	Stop & service
Vibration	Mechanical wear/damage	Professional diagnosis
Loose bur	Chuck	Stop using
Stiff chuck	Debris/wear	Clean, then inspect
Excess heat	Friction/cooling	Stop if abnormal
Poor performance	Bur/drive/handpiece	Diagnose
Weak spray	Water system	Check supply
Post-drop change	Impact damage	Inspection

When Is Professional Repair Necessary?

Basic troubleshooting can help rule out simple causes.

It shouldn't turn into repeated experimentation with a handpiece that is clearly deteriorating.

Arrange NSK EX Series repair when:

The abnormal sound continues
Vibration increases
The handpiece becomes unusually hot
Bur retention is unreliable
Performance remains poor
A post-impact change is noticeable

EX Series Troubleshooting FAQs

Why is my NSK EX Series making noise?

Noise can develop from internal wear, bearing deterioration, contamination or lubrication-related issues.

Why does the EX Series vibrate?

Vibration may be related to bearings, internal mechanical components, the bur or impact damage.

Can I use the handpiece if the bur is loose?

No. Stop using it and have the chuck and retention mechanism inspected.

Can lubrication fix a damaged EX Series?

Correct lubrication can support routine maintenance, but it cannot repair physically damaged or worn internal components.

How do I know if my EX Series needs professional repair?

Persistent noise, vibration, heat, poor performance or unreliable bur retention are all good reasons to arrange professional evaluation.
