Looking After an NSK FX Series

Your FX Series Maintenance Routine Starts After the Procedure

The most useful maintenance routine is one your dental team can repeat consistently.

For the NSK FX Series, routine care should cover more than cleaning the outside of the instrument. The chuck, moving components, spray area and overall condition all deserve attention.

Always use the manufacturer's current instructions for your exact model.

The “Before It Goes Away” Check

Before putting the handpiece aside after a procedure, take a few seconds to check it.

Remove the bur

Don't leave the bur installed during storage or reprocessing.

Look around the head

Check for visible debris or contamination.

Check the chuck

The retention mechanism should feel normal.

Look at the spray area

Make sure visible outlets aren't obviously obstructed.

This small inspection can catch problems before the next appointment.

Lubrication Isn't a One-Time Job

Internal moving components need appropriate lubrication as part of the manufacturer's maintenance process.

Use only the recommended lubricant and application method.

The goal isn't to flood the mechanism with oil. The goal is consistent, correct lubrication.

If a properly maintained handpiece suddenly becomes noisy or rough, don't simply keep adding lubricant. That may indicate mechanical wear requiring service.

Cleaning Around the Head

The head and chuck area can collect debris during normal clinical use.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions when cleaning these areas.

Avoid improvising with:

Sharp instruments

Unapproved chemicals

Excessive force

Procedures that can push contamination further inside

Proper cleaning should prepare the handpiece for the next stage of reprocessing.

Sterilization: Follow the Manufacturer

Cleaning, lubrication and sterilization are separate steps.

Your practice's workflow should follow the current NSK instructions for the specific FX Series model and your validated infection-control procedures.

A typical sequence is:

Clean → Lubricate → Prepare → Sterilize → Dry → Store

Do not substitute a generic handpiece procedure when the manufacturer provides model-specific instructions.

The Weekly “Listen & Feel” Test

Your team uses the handpiece regularly, which makes staff familiar with its normal behavior.

Once in a while, deliberately pay attention.

Listen

Does it sound the same?

Feel

Is the vibration unchanged?

Check

Does the chuck still work normally?

Observe

Is the spray consistent?

A gradual change is much easier to catch when you know what “normal” sounds and feels like.

Storage Is Part of Maintenance

A properly maintained handpiece can still be damaged by poor handling.

Avoid storing it where it can:

Fall from a counter

Be struck by instruments

Become contaminated after sterilization

Be compressed or damaged

Treat the handpiece as a precision instrument even when it isn't being used.

When Routine Care Isn't Enough

Maintenance protects a handpiece from avoidable problems.

It cannot reverse significant mechanical wear.

If your FX Series develops persistent:

Vibration

Grinding

Heat

Poor bur retention

Mechanical noise

move from routine maintenance to professional evaluation.
