When Your NSK FX Series Starts Acting Up

Five Things Your FX Series Might Be Telling You

A dental handpiece doesn't always fail suddenly.

More often, something changes first.

The sound becomes rough.

The bur doesn't feel quite right.

The handpiece gets warmer.

The performance isn't what it used to be.

Here's how to interpret those warning signs.

01 — “It Suddenly Sounds Rough”

A new mechanical sound is worth investigating.

Possible causes can include:

Internal wear
Bearing deterioration
Drive-component problems
Contamination
Maintenance issues

If correct cleaning and lubrication don't restore normal operation, arrange professional inspection.

02 — “The Handpiece Feels Different in My Hand”

An increase in vibration can be one of the earliest indications of mechanical deterioration.

Ask yourself:

Did the vibration appear suddenly?

Is it getting worse?

Does it happen consistently?

If the answer is yes, don't wait until the handpiece completely fails.

03 — “The Bur Isn't Staying Secure”

This is not a symptom to experiment with.

First verify that you're using the correct bur and that it has been inserted correctly.

If the bur remains loose or the chuck isn't operating normally:

Stop using the handpiece.

A professional inspection of the retention mechanism is appropriate.

04 — “It's Getting Hotter Than Normal”

Heat can result from increased friction or a cooling problem.

Possible areas include:

Bearings

Internal mechanical components

Lubrication

Cooling/water delivery

If the temperature is noticeably abnormal, remove the handpiece from clinical use and have it evaluated.

05 — “It Doesn't Cut Like It Used To”

Don't immediately blame the handpiece.

Work through the simplest possibilities first:

Check the bur

A worn or unsuitable bur can affect performance.

Check the connection

Make sure the handpiece is properly connected.

Check the drive

Determine whether the motor/drive is functioning normally.

Check the handpiece

If the other factors are normal, internal wear may be involved.

What If the Problem Appeared After a Drop?

A dropped FX Series handpiece deserves extra attention.

Even if there is no obvious crack, impact can potentially affect internal precision components.

Before using it again, look for:

New noise
Vibration
Bur instability
Heat
Reduced performance
Physical misalignment

Any noticeable change is a reason for inspection.

FX Series Quick Diagnosis

You Notice	Don't Assume	Have Checked
Noise	“It only needs oil”	Internal mechanism
Vibration	“That's normal”	Bearings/drive
Loose bur	“It'll be fine”	Chuck
Heat	“It will cool down”	Friction/cooling
Poor cutting	“The motor is bad”	Bur + drive + handpiece
Spray change	“The handpiece is broken”	Water supply + spray system

When Should You Stop Troubleshooting?

Basic external checks are fine.

Opening the handpiece and attempting an internal repair without the appropriate equipment and expertise is another matter.

If the issue involves the internal mechanism, persistent vibration, excessive heat or unreliable bur retention, seek professional NSK handpiece repair.

FX Series Troubleshooting FAQs

What is the most common reason an FX Series becomes noisy?

Mechanical wear, bearing deterioration, contamination or lubrication-related issues canontribute to abnormal noise.

Is vibration always a sign of a damaged handpiece?

Not necessarily. The bur, connection or other external factors can contribute. Persistent or increasing vibration should, however, be investigated.

Can I continue using an FX Series with a loose bur?

No. Stop using it and have the retention mechanism inspected.

Can cleaning fix an FX Series that is grinding?

Cleaning may resolve contamination-related problems, but persistent grinding can indicate internal mechanical wear and requires professional diagnosis.

When should I choose professional repair?

When a problem persists after appropriate basic maintenance, particularly when there is abnormal noise, vibration, heat, poor performance or unreliable bur retention.
