Your FX65 Maintenance Routine

A good maintenance routine for the NSK FX65 is less about doing complicated servicing and more about being consistent. Cleaning the handpiece promptly, following the correct lubrication procedure, checking the chuck, and noticing small changes in performance can help keep routine problems from becoming unexpected downtime.

Build Maintenance Into the Clinical Workflow

The easiest way to maintain an FX65 is to treat care as part of the procedure rather than something that happens only when the handpiece starts acting differently.

1. Clean It Without Delay

After a procedure, remove contamination as soon as practical and follow the current NSK instructions for cleaning and reprocessing. Blood, tissue, debris and other contaminants should not be allowed to remain on the handpiece unnecessarily. Use only cleaning methods appropriate for the FX65, as unsuitable products or procedures may damage the handpiece.

For a broader overview of routine NSK care, see the Ultimate Guide to NSK Dental Handpiece Maintenance & Repair.

2. Make Lubrication Consistent

Lubrication should be performed according to NSK's applicable instructions rather than simply adding oil whenever the handpiece sounds different. Correct lubrication helps support the internal mechanism and reduces the risk of maintenance-related performance problems. Avoid excessive lubricant, since residue can also affect operation. After lubrication, pay attention to how the FX65 performs. Persistent roughness, unusual noise or heat may indicate that the handpiece needs more than routine maintenance.

Give the Chuck a Quick Check

The chuck deserves a quick inspection before the FX65 goes back into regular use.

Look for changes such as:

	Sticking or difficult operation

	Unusual resistance

	Excessive looseness

	Difficulty securing an attachment

	Difficulty releasing an attachment

The chuck should operate smoothly and retain the compatible attachment properly. A noticeable change can be an early indication of contamination, wear or mechanical damage.

If the chuck continues to behave differently after appropriate cleaning and maintenance, consider professional handpiece repair rather than repeatedly forcing the mechanism.

Don't Overlook the Bur or Attachment

Not every vibration or irregular rotation problem originates inside the handpiece. Before assuming that the FX65 has developed an internal fault, check the condition and compatibility of the bur or attachment being used. Damaged, worn or unsuitable accessories can contribute to vibration and uneven operation. A simple pre-use check can help prevent unnecessary stress on the handpiece.

Reprocessing: Follow the Manufacturer's Method

Cleaning, lubrication, packaging and sterilization should all follow the manufacturer's current instructions for the FX65.

Avoid improvised reprocessing methods or products that are not approved for the handpiece. Repeated exposure to unsuitable procedures may contribute to premature wear or damage.

Learn What "Normal" Feels Like

One of the most useful maintenance habits does not require any equipment: know how your FX65 normally sounds and feels.

During use, notice whether there is a change in:

 Performance Check

 What to Notice

 Sound

 New, rough or unusual noise

 Rotation

 Smoothness and consistency

 Vibration

 Increased movement compared with normal

 Temperature

 Unusual heat during operation

 Chuck

 Changes in resistance or retention

 Overall performance

 Slower, weaker or inconsistent operation

A small change does not necessarily mean a major failure, but a change that persists or gets worse should not be ignored.

Protect It Between Procedures

Careful handling is part of maintenance too.

Avoid dropping the FX65, striking it against instruments, placing unnecessary pressure on the chuck or connection areas, or storing it where it can easily fall.

After appropriate cleaning and reprocessing, keep the handpiece clean, dry and protected according to the manufacturer's storage recommendations.

Good storage practices also mean avoiding:

	Contaminated storage

Heavy instruments placed on the handpiece

Unprotected areas where the FX65 may be knocked or dropped

	Conditions outside manufacturer recommendations

A Faster FX65 Maintenance Check

Instead of waiting for a problem, use this quick routine:

After treatment → Clean → Lubricate correctly → Check chuck → Inspect attachment → Reprocess correctly → Listen and feel during use → Store safely

This simple sequence makes it easier to catch changes before they become a complete interruption to clinical work.

When Should You Stop Relying on Routine Maintenance?

Maintenance can prevent many avoidable problems, but it cannot restore components that are already worn or damaged.

If the FX65 continues to develop:

	Persistent unusual noise

	Increasing vibration

	Excessive heat

	Rough rotation

	Chuck or retention problems

	Repeated performance changes

then professional inspection may be appropriate.

If you are unsure whether the handpiece needs servicing, you can request NSK dental handpiece repair and have the problem assessed before it leads to more downtime.
