Keeping an NSK FX65m in Good Working Condition

Regular maintenance can help keep the NSK FX65m operating smoothly and reduce the risk of unexpected problems. Proper cleaning, lubrication, careful handling, and routine inspection are important for maintaining a precision handpiece.

For the FX65m, focus on three basics: clean it properly, lubricate it correctly, and notice changes early.

Get NSK Handpiece Repair

1. Clean Promptly

After clinical use, follow the current NSK-approved cleaning and reprocessing procedure. Remove contamination promptly rather than allowing it to dry on the handpiece. Avoid unapproved cleaning chemicals or improvised methods that could damage the instrument. Regular cleaning helps prevent contamination from affecting moving and retention components.

For a broader overview of NSK handpiece care, see the Ultimate Guide to NSK Dental Handpiece Maintenance & Repair.

2. Lubrication Should Be Consistent

Follow NSK's recommended lubrication procedure and use the appropriate lubricant. Consistent lubrication helps reduce unnecessary friction and supports smooth operation of internal components. However, applying extra lubricant should not be used as a solution for unusual noise, vibration, or rough rotation. If these symptoms continue after proper maintenance, the FX65m may require professional inspection.

3. Check the Retention Mechanism

Before clinical use, make sure the chuck or attachment mechanism operates normally.

Watch for:

Difficulty inserting or releasing the attachment

	Increased stiffness

	Unusual looseness

	Changes in retention

	Irregular chuck operation

Do not force the mechanism if it suddenly feels different. Contamination, wear, or mechanical damage may require professional attention.

4. Inspect After Sterilization

After cleaning, reprocessing, and sterilization, inspect the FX65m before returning it to service.

Check for:

	Visible contamination

	Physical damage

	Unusual movement

	Chuck problems

Changes in its normal operating condition

Always follow the current NSK instructions for the applicable cleaning, reprocessing, and sterilization procedure.

5. Handle It Carefully

Avoid dropping the FX65m or allowing it to strike hard surfaces. An impact can affect internal components even when there is little visible external damage. After an accidental drop, pay attention to new vibration, unusual noise, rough rotation, heat, or retention problems. If a new symptom appears after an impact, professional inspection is recommended.

6. Monitor Sound, Vibration and Rotation

Small changes in performance can provide an early warning that the handpiece needs attention.

Listen for:

	Increased operating noise

	Rough or unfamiliar sounds

	New vibration

	Changes in rotational smoothness

	Increased resistance

First check the bur, attachment, and maintenance condition. If the problem continues with a suitable setup, the handpiece should be professionally evaluated.

7. Keep a Maintenance Record

For busy dental practices, a simple maintenance record can make recurring problems easier to identify.

Record:

	Date of maintenance

	Lubrication

	Repairs performed

	Recurring symptoms

	Sterilization concerns

This can help your team recognize when a handpiece may require professional service instead of routine maintenance alone.

When Routine Maintenance Is No Longer Enough

Maintenance can help prevent many problems, but it cannot correct worn or damaged internal components. If the FX65m continues to show noise, vibration, excessive heat, rough rotation, or retention problems despite correct maintenance, professional inspection is recommended. A qualified technician can determine whether the problem involves the chuck, bearings, drive components, or another internal area.

When to Call a Repair Technician

If your FX65m is no longer operating normally, don't wait for complete failure. Early inspection can help identify developing problems and determine whether repair is appropriate.
