Is Your NSK nano Series Behaving Differently?

A handpiece doesn't have to stop completely before it needs attention.

Sometimes the warning is subtle:

“It sounds different.”

“It doesn't feel as smooth.”

“The bur isn't behaving normally.”

“It's getting warmer.”

These changes can provide useful clues.

These changes can provide useful clues. For broader guidance on interpreting changes in handpiece performance, see Maintaining Precision: Troubleshooting Common Issues with Dental Handpieces.

Symptom: New Noise

A change in sound is one of the easiest things for a clinician to notice.

Possible causes

Bearing wear
Internal mechanical deterioration
Contamination
Lubrication problems

What to do

Perform the manufacturer's recommended maintenance first.

If the noise remains, don't continue operating the handpiece indefinitely. Arrange a professional assessment.

Symptom: Increased Vibration

A contra-angle that suddenly feels more aggressive or uneven deserves attention. Before assuming the handpiece is damaged, check the bur and connection. If the vibration continues, possible causes can include internal mechanical wear or impact damage.

Increasing vibration should not be ignored.

Symptom: Bur Retention Has Changed

A bur that isn't held securely is a reason to stop using the handpiece.

Check:

Correct bur
Correct insertion
Clean chuck area
Normal retention mechanism

If the bur remains loose, professional chuck inspection is required.

Symptom: The Handpiece Is Hot

If the bur remains loose, professional chuck inspection is required. For additional guidance on bur-retention problems, see Dental Handpiece Bur Keeps Falling Out — Causes & Solutions. Unusual heat may be associated with increased friction, mechanical wear, lubrication problems or inadequate cooling.

If the handpiece becomes abnormally hot during normal operation:

Stop → Allow it to cool → Check the obvious external factors → Arrange service if the problem persists.

Symptom: Performance Has Declined

Before blaming the nano Series itself, rule out the easiest possibilities.

Check the bur

Is it worn or damaged?

Check the connection

Is the handpiece properly connected?

Check the drive

Is the motor/drive operating correctly?

Then assess the handpiece

If the problem follows the handpiece, professional diagnosis may be required.

Symptom: Spray Is Weak or Uneven

A spray problem can originate outside the handpiece. Check the dental unit's water supply and connection first. If other instruments receive normal cooling but the nano Series does not, the handpiece's spray pathway may need inspection.

Symptom: It Was Dropped

If other instruments receive normal cooling but the nano Series does not, the handpiece's spray pathway may need inspection. If you are dealing with a broader water-spray issue, see Water Spray Not Working on My Dental Handpiece — How to Fix.

Don't assume that “no visible damage” means “no damage.”

After an impact, check for:

Vibration
Noise
Chuck changes
Heat
Performance loss
Physical movement

A professional inspection is sensible if anything has changed.

Quick nano Troubleshooting Table

What Changed?	Possible Cause	What to Do
New noise	Internal wear/contamination	Service if persistent
More vibration	Mechanical wear/damage	Professional inspection
Loose bur	Chuck/retention issue	Stop using
Excess heat	Friction/cooling	Stop if abnormal
Poor performance	Bur/drive/handpiece	Diagnose
Weak spray	Supply/pathway	Check supply first
Post-drop change	Impact damage	Inspection

Don't Keep “Testing” a Failing Handpiece

There is a difference between troubleshooting and repeatedly using an instrument that is showing clear warning signs.

If the nano Series has:

Persistent mechanical noise
Increasing vibration
Unreliable bur retention
Excessive heat
Repeated performance problems

Professional NSK dental handpiece repair is the appropriate next step.

nano Series FAQs

Why is my NSK nano handpiece vibrating?

Possible causes include internal mechanical wear, bearing deterioration, contamination, bur-related problems or impact damage.

Why is my nano handpiece making a strange noise?

Abnormal noise can indicate developing internal wear or a maintenance-related problem. Persistent noise should be assessed professionally.

What should I do if the bur is loose?

Stop using the handpiece and have the chuck/retention mechanism inspected.

Can regular lubrication prevent nano Series repairs?

Correct lubrication is an important part of preventive care, but it cannot prevent every type of mechanical failure or repair need.

Should I repair or replace my nano Series handpiece?

That depends on the model, physical condition, fault and cost of repair. A professional assessment can help determine the more practical option.
