NSK S-Max M Maintenance Guide

Getting More From Your NSK S-Max M: Maintenance Guide

Good maintenance is about protecting performance before a repair becomes necessary.

The S-Max M Series incorporates features such as NSK's Clean Head System, push-button chuck and, on applicable models, ceramic bearings and Quattro Spray.

These features help support long-term performance, but they don't replace daily maintenance.

Always use the latest NSK instructions for the exact S-Max M model you have.

The S-Max M Has Different Maintenance Needs by Model

Before establishing a maintenance routine, identify your handpiece.

Model	Ratio	Spray
M95L / M95	1:5	Quattro
M94L	1:4	Quattro
M25L / M25	1:1	Single
M15L / M15	4:1	Single
M65	1:1	Single

NSK's current product information lists these configurations and specifications.

This matters because maintenance instructions and clinical behavior can differ between configurations.

1. Clean Before You Lubricate

Remove the bur and clean the handpiece according to NSK's instructions.

Pay attention to:

Head
Chuck
Bur opening
Spray outlets
External surfaces

Avoid forcing debris deeper into the mechanism.

2. Protect the Chuck

The push-button chuck makes bur changes convenient, but convenience shouldn't lead to rough handling.

During routine checks:

Insert → Lock → Test retention → Release

The bur should move smoothly into position and remain secure.

If the push button suddenly feels stiff or the bur behaves differently, treat that as a warning rather than forcing it.

3. Keep the Clean Head System Working

NSK's Clean Head System is designed with an anti-suck-back mechanism intended to prevent oral fluids and foreign matter from entering the head. NSK notes that this helps protect bearings and mechanical components.

That does not mean the head can be neglected.

Continue the manufacturer's recommended cleaning and lubrication process after use.

4. Don't Ignore Lubrication

Lubrication helps reduce friction within the moving mechanism.

Use the appropriate NSK-recommended lubricant and application procedure for your model.

Avoid:

Guessing the amount
Using unsuitable oil
Skipping lubrication
Assuming sterilization eliminates the need for lubrication

Correct lubrication should be part of a consistent workflow.

5. Check the Spray Pattern

The S-Max M range does not use one identical spray system.

For example, NSK specifies Quattro Spray for M95/M95L and M94L, while M25/M25L, M15/M15L and M65 use single spray configurations.

Check for:

Reduced flow
Uneven spray
Blocked outlets
Changes in cooling

A sudden change is worth investigating.

6. Listen Before You Sterilize

A quick functional check can reveal developing problems.

Healthy handpiece

Smooth sound

Stable rotation

Normal temperature

Secure bur

Possible warning

New clicking

Grinding

Rattling

Vibration

Excessive heat

Don't wait for the instrument to stop completely.

Sterilization & Reprocessing

NSK's current S-Max M documentation indicates the series is washable in a thermodisinfector and autoclavable up to 135°C.

However, the practice should always follow NSK's current model-specific reprocessing instructions and its validated infection-control procedures.

A typical workflow is:

Cleaning → Lubrication → Preparation → Sterilization → Drying → Storage

A Simple Weekly S-Max M Check

Dental teams can quickly review:

Chuck: secure?

Head: clean?

Spray: normal?

Sound: unchanged?

Vibration: normal?

Temperature: normal?

Body: any impact damage?

This takes very little time but can reveal gradual deterioration.

When Should Maintenance Become Professional Service?

Maintenance is preventative—it cannot restore worn bearings, damaged gears or a failing chuck.

Arrange NSK handpiece repair if your S-Max M continues to show:

Abnormal noise
Persistent vibration
Excessive heat
Poor cutting performance
Bur-retention problems
Water-spray problems
