Maintaining the NSK X-SG65 / X-SG65L

The NSK X-SG65 and X-SG65L are 1:1 direct-drive surgical handpieces designed for Ø2.35 mm HP burs. NSK lists a maximum speed of 40,000 min⁻¹. Because these handpieces are used for surgical procedures, consistent maintenance is important for maintaining smooth operation, reliable bur retention and overall instrument condition. Correct bur handling, cleaning, lubrication, reprocessing and storage should be part of the regular maintenance routine. Always follow the current NSK instructions for the exact handpiece model and your reprocessing equipment.

The HP Bur Is Part of the Maintenance Routine

Don't inspect only the handpiece. The condition and fit of the HP bur can also affect the handpiece's operation.

Before use, inspect the bur for:

Damage
Bending
Excessive wear
Corrosion or contamination
Incorrect fit
Signs of abnormal wear

A damaged or questionable bur should be replaced rather than used to "test" whether the handpiece is working correctly. Make sure the bur is properly inserted and securely retained before clinical use. If insertion, removal or retention feels different from normal, the chuck and handpiece should be assessed.

For additional surgical handpiece care information, see Surgery Handpieces.

Inspect the Handpiece Before Use

A quick inspection can help identify developing problems before the handpiece is used during a procedure.

Check for:

Visible damage to the housing
Unusual contamination
Loose components
Abnormal bur retention
Changes in rotation
Unusual sound
Increased vibration
Signs of excessive heat

If the handpiece behaves differently from normal, don't ignore the change. Early inspection can help identify a maintenance issue before it develops into a larger mechanical problem.

Clean Around the Working End

After each procedure, follow NSK's approved cleaning process.

Pay particular attention to the head, chuck area, working end and other locations where debris or contamination can accumulate.

Cleaning should be performed promptly and according to the manufacturer's current instructions. Avoid improvised cleaning methods or tools that could damage precision components.

If normal cleaning does not restore smooth operation or the handpiece continues to show unusual symptoms, professional inspection may be necessary.

For broader handpiece maintenance guidance, Star Dental EZ Handpieces: Essential Maintenance Tips provides additional maintenance considerations.

Lubrication

Use the NSK-recommended lubricant and lubrication method for the applicable handpiece.

Proper lubrication can help reduce friction and support smooth operation, but more lubricant is not necessarily better. Over-lubricating can create additional cleaning issues and does not correct worn or damaged internal components.

If the handpiece continues to produce unusual noise, vibration or rough rotation after the correct lubrication procedure, don't simply apply more lubricant. The underlying cause may require professional diagnosis.

Check the Chuck and Bur Retention

The chuck is an important part of the X-SG65/X-SG65L because it securely holds the appropriate HP bur.

During routine care, pay attention to:

Ease of bur insertion
Ease of bur removal
Secure retention
Unusual looseness
Excessive resistance
Changes in chuck operation

Never force the bur or chuck mechanism. A sudden change in retention or chuck operation can indicate contamination, wear or mechanical damage.

External Cooling

The X-SG65/X-SG65L uses external cooling, so the surgical setup should provide appropriate cooling before use.

Check the cooling arrangement as part of the normal setup and make sure it is functioning as intended.

If the handpiece becomes unusually hot during operation, don't assume the problem is only related to cooling. Excessive heat can also be associated with friction, lubrication problems or internal mechanical wear.

X-SG65L Light Check

For the optic X-SG65L, add an illumination check to your routine.

Before use, confirm that the light is functioning normally. If the handpiece rotates normally but illumination is weak, intermittent or absent, the optical and connection-related areas should be evaluated separately from the mechanical drive.

A change in illumination should not automatically be treated as a mechanical handpiece problem.

Cleaning Before Sterilization

Cleaning and sterilization are separate steps in the reprocessing process.

Remove contamination using the appropriate manufacturer-recommended cleaning procedure before sterilization. Pay particular attention to areas around the working end, chuck and external surfaces where debris may remain.

Do not assume that sterilization alone replaces proper cleaning. Consistent cleaning helps support both infection-control practices and the long-term condition of the instrument.

Reprocessing and Sterilization

NSK documentation states that these handpieces are compatible with thermodisinfection and can be autoclaved up to 135°C under the applicable conditions.

Always follow the current NSK instructions for the specific X-SG65/X-SG65L model, approved cleaning products, lubrication procedure and sterilization equipment.

Do not improvise temperatures, chemicals or reprocessing methods. Incorrect processing can potentially affect the handpiece's components and performance.

Protect the Handpiece During Handling

Surgical handpieces contain precision mechanical components and should be handled carefully during cleaning, transportation and storage.

Avoid:

Dropping the handpiece
Striking the head or working end
Placing heavy instruments on it
Using excessive force on the chuck
Storing it where it can be damaged

A handpiece can experience internal damage after an impact even when there is little visible external damage.

If the operating sound, vibration or bur retention changes after a drop or impact, have the handpiece inspected before returning it to clinical use.

For surgical repair considerations after mechanical problems or damage, see Surgical Handpiece Repair Service – Precision Repairs for Oral Surgery & Implant Clinic.

Storage After Reprocessing

After cleaning, reprocessing and drying, store the handpiece in a clean and protected environment.

Keep it:

Protected from unnecessary impact
Free from contamination
Properly prepared for the next use
Away from heavy instruments or objects
Protected from damage to the working end and connection

Avoid storing a contaminated or improperly prepared handpiece for extended periods.

Monitor Changes in Performance

Maintenance is not only about cleaning the handpiece. It is also about recognizing changes in performance.

Monitor:

Operating sound
Vibration
Rotation smoothness
Bur retention
Chuck operation
Temperature
Cooling performance
Illumination on the X-SG65L

A gradual change can be an early indication of contamination, lubrication issues or mechanical wear.

Addressing these changes early may help prevent a more extensive repair.

Simple X-SG65 Maintenance Routine

Maintenance Task	Recommended Approach
Before each use	Inspect handpiece, bur and chuck
After each procedure	Clean according to current NSK instructions
Lubrication	Use the recommended lubricant and method
Bur care	Check for damage, bending and wear
Chuck care	Check insertion, removal and retention
Cooling	Confirm appropriate external cooling
X-SG65L	Check illumination
Reprocessing	Follow current NSK cleaning and sterilization instructions
Storage	Keep clean, dry, protected and safely stored
Abnormal symptoms	Remove from service and arrange inspection

When Maintenance Is No Longer Enough

Routine maintenance can help prevent avoidable problems, but it cannot correct every mechanical fault.

If the X-SG65 or X-SG65L continues to show:

Persistent vibration
Unusual noise
Excessive heat
Rough rotation
Bur-retention problems
Chuck difficulties
Reduced performance
Illumination problems on the X-SG65L

Don't repeatedly clean or lubricate a handpiece in an attempt to correct a persistent mechanical problem. The symptoms may indicate worn bearings, chuck problems or another internal component issue.
