Nupro Freedom Cordless Prophy System Maintenance Guide

Most handpiece maintenance guides center on lubrication. The Nupro Freedom flips that expectation entirely: its motor is lube-free by design, and the maintenance routine that actually matters here is about what never touches an autoclave, not what gets oiled between patients.

The One Rule That Protects the Entire System

Dentsply Sirona's documentation states it without qualification: sterilizing the cordless handpiece inner module will cause component damage to both the inner module and the handpiece. Only the outer sheath the removable, autoclavable barrier that covers the inner module during use goes through your sterilizer. The inner module itself is cleaned and disinfected according to Dentsply Sirona's specific instructions, never autoclaved.

THE ROUTINE

Daily and Between-Patient Care

Dispose of the single-use prophy angle, remove and autoclave the outer sheath, replace with a sterilized sheath, and clean/disinfect the inner module per Dentsply Sirona's instructions; never autoclave it.

Rotate through all three provided outer sheaths so one is always sterilized and ready while others are in use or being processed.

WHY THREE SHEATHS

Making the Three-Sheath System Work for You

The system ships with three autoclavable outer sheaths specifically so your practice always has one ready while another is mid-sterilization cycle and a third is in use. Treat this rotation as part of your actual workflow, not an afterthought. Running short on sterilized sheaths is one of the more common reasons practices end up improvising in ways Dentsply Sirona doesn't support.

Worth knowing: the cordless handpiece inner module motor is specifically designed to be lube-free. Dentsply Sirona states this directly in its documentation. Don't apply any lubricant to the inner module expecting it to help; it isn't part of the validated maintenance process and risks the kind of damage the no-autoclave rule is also meant to prevent.

AVOID THESE

Maintenance Mistakes to Avoid

Autoclaving the inner module out of habit

This is explicitly called out by Dentsply Sirona as causing component damage, the single most important mistake to avoid on this entire system.

Charging with a non-Nupro Freedom power supply

Risks damage to the charging circuitry; use only the components that came with the system.

Substituting a different brand's prophy angle

The system is validated exclusively for Nupro Freedom Disposable Prophy Angles.

Protecting a Three-Year Investment

The inner module's 3-year warranty reflects how Dentsply Sirona expects this system to perform when it's cared for correctly, which, for the Nupro Freedom, mostly means following the sterilization and charging rules exactly as documented rather than applying habits carried over from a different handpiece system. Get those two things right, and there's very little else standing between your practice and the system's full working life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What happens if the inner module accidentally goes through an autoclave cycle?

A. Dentsply Sirona's documentation states this causes component damage; contact professional service rather than continuing to use the unit.

Q. Do I need to lubricate the motor at any point?

A. No, the inner module motor is specifically designed to be lube-free; there's no lubrication step in the validated maintenance routine.
