The Short Version

Because the Nupro RDH has no turbine, no water spray, and no chip air system, there are really only three places a fault can hide: the swivel junction where the handpiece meets its hose, the attachment point where a prophy angle or replaceable head connects, and, on Right Angle versions only, the gear mesh inside the head itself. This guide walks through each, using Dentsply Sirona's own installation, maintenance, and repair documentation.

Two Handpieces, Not One

Dentsply Sirona sells the Nupro RDH in two distinct attachment styles, and knowing which one you have changes both troubleshooting and parts ordering.

U-Style Attachment

Built for single-use disposable prophy angles only. The angle pushes directly into the handpiece until a locating button seats into a notch on the angle; there's no replaceable head and no reusable right angle to maintain.

Right Angle Attachment

Uses a reusable, replaceable prophy head that threads onto the handpiece sheath and is tightened with a dedicated plastic head wrench. This version has its own specific maintenance and gear-mesh considerations that the U-Style version simply doesn't need.

Key Specifications

Specification	Value
Speed	Up to 6,000 rpm

Recommended air pressure	30–40 psi (minimum 20 psi to reduce speed)
Maximum air pressure	45 psi; never exceed
Water spray / chip air	None this handpiece doesn't use either
Warranty	2 years from date of purchase

Why This Handpiece Breaks Less Often Than You'd Expect

With no turbine cartridge, no spray nozzles, and no fiber optic bundle to maintain, the Nupro RDH simply has fewer parts that can fail compared to a high-speed handpiece. That said, Dentsply Sirona's documentation is specific about one thing that actually works against this handpiece if done wrong: automatic oiling. The instructions state plainly that automatic oilers should be disconnected and that oil mist lubrication should not be used, because excess oil can hinder performance. That's the opposite of how some turbine systems are maintained, and it's a detail worth getting right.

Where Wear Actually Shows Up

The Swivel Junction

Where the handpiece connects to its hose is the single most mechanically active point on the device, since the whole assembly rotates around it during use. A dry or stiff swivel, or one that leaks air, is the most common early wear sign on a Nupro RDH.

The Prophy Angle / Head Connection

On U-Style units, a worn locating button or notch can let the disposable angle sit loosely rather than seating fully. On Right Angle units, the threaded connection between the head and sheath can loosen over time or fail to mesh correctly if reassembled incorrectly after cleaning.

Gear Mesh Inside the Right Angle Head

Right Angle versions only: if the prophy head's internal gears aren't meshing properly against the drive sheath, Dentsply Sirona's own installation instructions describe backing the head off a quarter turn and retightening as the first fix a detail specific enough that it's worth knowing before assuming the head itself is faulty.

Confirming a Fault Before You Call for Service

Confirm which attachment style you have: U-Style or Right Angle, since troubleshooting differs between them.
Check that drive air pressure falls within 30 to 40 psi, and never exceeds 45 psi.
Test the swivel junction for smooth rotation and listen for any air leakage.
Confirm a prophy angle or head seats fully and securely before running the handpiece.
For Right Angle versions, confirm the head wrench tightens the assembly fully and that gears mesh smoothly when turned by hand.

A Precaution Dentsply Sirona States Directly

From the Nupro RDH's own instructions

Do not operate the handpiece unless a prophy angle or cup is properly secured. A loose prophy angle could eject from the handpiece and cause personal injury.

This isn't a generic warning; it's specific to how this particular handpiece's attachment mechanism works, and it's exactly why a loose-feeling angle or head connection should be treated as a stop-and-check situation rather than something to push through.

What a Genuine Repair Involves

Swivel service: a dry, stiff, or leaking swivel junction is cleaned, re-lubricated, or replaced depending on the extent of wear.
Attachment mechanism repair: a worn locating button (U-Style) or a head/sheath connection that won't hold securely (Right Angle) is repaired or replaced using genuine parts.
Gear and head service: on Right Angle units, persistent mesh problems beyond the standard quarter-turn adjustment point to head or sheath wear needing professional attention.
Final verification: before a repaired Nupro RDH returns to service, swivel smoothness, attachment security, and running speed should all be checked against normal specifications.

When Professional Repair Is Required

The swivel junction feels stiff, dry, or leaks air after basic lubrication
A prophy angle or head doesn't seat and hold securely despite confirming correct technique
Gear mesh problems on a Right Angle unit persist after the quarter-turn adjustment
The handpiece doesn't reach normal speed at correct air pressure

Preventive Servicing Worth Building In

The weekly swivel lubrication Dentsply Sirona specifies two drops of lubricant worked into the junction by twisting the swivel is really the single most important preventive habit for this handpiece. For Right Angle units, pairing that with the documented every-40-prophies ultrasonic cleaning of the head keeps the gear mesh from degrading quietly over weeks of use.

Understanding the Warranty

Dentsply Sirona's own instructions state a 2-year warranty against material and workmanship defects, contingent on the handpiece being operated and maintained as described in the official instructions and not subjected to misuse, abuse, or accident. Worth noting: refurbished or overstocked units sold through third-party resellers sometimes carry shorter coverage, so confirm warranty terms against your specific purchase rather than assuming the full 2 years applies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Dentsply Sirona say to disconnect automatic oilers?

Because excess oil can hinder the Nupro RDH's performance, this handpiece is maintained through manual drop or spray lubrication at specific points, not continuous automatic oiling, which is a meaningful difference from how some turbine handpieces are cared for.

Can I use the Right Angle head on a U-Style handpiece, or the reverse?

No, the two attachment styles are built around different mechanisms and aren't interchangeable. Confirm your REF number before ordering replacement parts.
