The Warning That Comes Before Every Other Check

Dentsply Sirona's own precaution for the Nupro RDH is specific and worth reading before anything else on this page: do not operate the handpiece unless a prophy angle or cup is properly secured, since a loose angle could eject from the handpiece and cause personal injury. If an angle or head ever feels even slightly loose, that takes priority over every other troubleshooting step below.

Fault Lookup Table

Symptom	Likely Cause	First Check
Prophy angle feels loose or wobbles	Worn locating button, or angle not fully pushed in	Stop use; re-seat fully before continuing
Right Angle head won't tighten securely	Gears not meshed correctly	Back head off 1/4 turn, then retighten
Handpiece won't reach 6,000 rpm	Low air pressure, or worn motor	Confirm pressure reads 30–40 psi
Swivel feels stiff or leaks air	Missed weekly lubrication	Check when swivel was last lubricated
Noise or roughness during operation	Debris or insufficient internal lubrication	Confirm correct lubrication method was followed
Performance drops after sterilization	Handpiece used before fully cooling	Allow complete cool-down before next use

Step-by-Step: Angle or Head Feels Loose

Stop using the handpiece immediately; do not attempt to finish a procedure with a loose attachment.
For U-Style units, remove the angle and confirm the locating button and notch are undamaged, then re-seat fully.
For Right Angle units, remove the head and inspect the threads for damage or debris before reinstalling.
If the attachment still doesn't seat and hold securely after reinstallation, the mechanism needs professional service rather than continued use.

Step-by-Step: Right Angle Head Won't Tighten Properly

Unscrew the head completely using the plastic head wrench.
Screw the head back on by hand (clockwise) until resistance is felt.
If the gears don't mesh properly, back the head off a quarter turn, then retighten.
Lock the head onto the sheath by tightening fully with the wrench.
Confirm the head is tight and secure before operating; this is a documented requirement, not an optional check.

Step-by-Step: Reduced Speed or Weak Performance

Check drive air pressure against the 30–40 psi recommended range, confirming it never exceeds 45 psi.
Confirm no automatic oiler is connected to the handpiece, since this is specifically documented as a performance issue for this model.
Review whether the full lubrication procedure Method One or Method Two was followed completely at the last cleaning cycle.
If speed stays low after these checks, the internal motor likely needs professional assessment.

User-Safe Checks

Confirming a prophy angle or head is fully and securely seated before every use
Checking drive air pressure against the 30–40 psi range
Performing the quarter-turn gear mesh adjustment on Right Angle heads
Confirming the correct lubrication method was followed at the last cleaning cycle
Checking that no automatic oiler is connected
Allowing the handpiece to cool fully after sterilization before use

Not a user-safe check

Continuing to use a handpiece with a loose angle or head, or attempting to force a head to thread when it isn't meshing. Both are explicitly flagged as injury risks in Dentsply Sirona's own instructions.

When to Stop Using the Handpiece Immediately

Any looseness in the prophy angle or Right Angle head attachment
The handpiece is still warm from sterilization
Air is leaking audibly from the swivel junction
Unusual noise or roughness appears during a brief test run

When Professional Repair Becomes Necessary

An angle or head won't seat securely even after reinstallation and the quarter-turn gear adjustment
Speed stays below specification after confirming air pressure and lubrication are correct
The swivel continues to leak air or feel stiff after fresh lubrication
Any damage is visible on the locating button, threads, or gear teeth

Frequently Asked Questions

How tight should the Right Angle head actually be?

Tight enough that it's secured with the plastic head wrench after hand-threading. Dentsply Sirona's instructions state the head must be tightened securely before operating, not just finger-tight.

Is it normal for the handpiece to feel different right after sterilization?

It should feel the same once fully cooled; the specific precaution is to let it cool completely before use, not that performance should differ afterward.
