Use Multi Spray, Not a Substitute

Multi Spray is Morita's own lubricant, formulated specifically for TwinPower handpieces, straight and geared-angle handpieces, air-powered scalers, and air motors. Substituting a generic handpiece lubricant is one of the more common ways an older, otherwise sound TwinPower unit ends up with a coupling or braking problem that reads like a repair issue but was actually a maintenance mismatch.

Don't assume a lubricant that works fine on another brand's handpiece is safe here; Morita's own documentation says otherwise

If an older unit suddenly connects or disconnects with more resistance than usual, check what's been used to lubricate it before assuming a coupling fault

Sterilization and Coupling Care

Sterilize per your practice's standard cycle for high-speed handpieces, and take extra care with the coupling interface if your unit uses a KaVo, W&H, NSK, or Sirona-style adapter rather than Morita's own coupling; the adapter is an added wear point on top of the handpiece itself.

Maintenance Mistakes That Age a TwinPower Handpiece Faster

Using a generic or off-brand lubricant

Morita specifically warns this can affect malfunction risk, coupling connection, and braking time.

Letting years pass without a professional inspection

Rotor and bearing wear on older units is gradual; by the time it's obviously audible, it's often further along than it sounds.

Ignoring a coupling that's becoming harder to connect

Often a maintenance-product issue, but worth ruling out before assuming the coupling itself has failed.

FAQ

Q. Is Multi Spray really necessary, or is it a sales upsell?

A. It's Morita's own documented recommendation, specifically because other lubricants are cited as a cause of malfunction, connection issues, and braking time changes — not a generic upsell.

Q. How often should an older TwinPower unit get a professional check, even without symptoms?

A. Morita doesn't publish a fixed interval, but for units with many years of service, a periodic inspection catches rotor and bearing wear before it becomes an in-use failure.

Q. Does the maintenance routine differ between Standard, Torque, and Ultra variants?

A. The core lubrication and sterilization principles are the same across variants; always confirm details against the instructions for your specific model.
