An older TwinPower Turbine handpiece that's been in service for years will feel and sound slightly different from a brand-new one, which alone isn't a fault. The goal here is separating expected, gradual change from the kind of symptom that means it's time to stop and get it checked.

 Warning Signs to Watch For

A noticeable, sudden drop in cutting power rather than a gradual one

Grinding or scraping noise that's new, not just quieter operation than a newer unit

The coupling becoming difficult to connect or disconnect

Visible wear or damage at the coupling interface or head

Bur slipping or not seating despite a properly functioning autochuck test

Confirm the lubricant in use is Morita Multi Spray, not a substitute, before assuming a coupling or braking fault

Test bur retention with a known-good bur before assuming the chuck has failed

Check air supply pressure against spec before assuming a rotor problem

Note whether a symptom appeared suddenly or gradually; this alone helps narrow down the likely cause

 FAQ

Q. How do I know if my older TwinPower unit is just "old" versus actually faulty?

A. Gradual, mild changes in sound or feel over years are typical; sudden changes, new noises, or performance drops are the signals worth investigating.

Q. Can a lubricant switch really cause a coupling problem?

A. Yes , Morita's own documentation specifically ties non-Multi Spray lubricants to malfunction risk and connection difficulty.

Q. Is it normal for an older handpiece to sound different from a new one?

A. Some difference is expected with age, but new grinding, scraping, or a sudden change is not; that's the distinction worth paying attention to.
