The Clock Starts the Moment the Procedure Ends

Bien-Air's documented instruction is specific: clean, disinfect, and lubricate the instrument within a maximum of 30 minutes after each treatment. Waiting longer risks letting residue sit long enough to start blocking the transmission system a mechanical consequence, not just a hygiene concern.

Before First Use: A Step Most People Skip

New out of the box doesn't mean ready to use. Bien-Air's instructions state directly that the device must be cleaned, dried, lubricated, and sterilized prior to first use the same full sequence you'd run between patients, run once before the handpiece ever touches a patient at all.

Why This Handpiece Must Be Sterilized Before Surgery, Not Just After

Because the PM 1:1 EXT. is built for oral surgery and implantology, Bien-Air's guidance is explicit that the handpiece must be sterilized before surgical treatment framing sterilization as a pre-procedure safety requirement for this instrument category, not solely a post-use cleanup step.

The Cleaning Sequence, Step by Step

1	Remove the bur and any accessories. Clear the handpiece and nosecone before beginning cleaning the same procedure applies to both.

2	Spray the inside and outside with Aquacare. This is Bien-Air's documented cleaning spray for both internal and external surfaces of the handpiece and nose.

3	Lubricate per the documented procedure. Use Lubrifluid following Bien-Air's specific application instructions for this handpiece family.

4	Sterilize before the instrument is used again. Whether that's the next patient or, for surgical use specifically, immediately before the procedure itself.

VERIFIED EXTERNAL TUBING IS DISPOSABLE, NOT REUSABLE

Because the PM 1:1 EXT. delivers its coolant through external, disposable tubing rather than an internal channel, that tubing is a single-use, sterile-supply component not something to clean and reuse the way you would the handpiece itself. Treating disposable tubing as reusable defeats the hygiene design the EXT. system was built around.

Daily Habits That Actually Matter

Inspect external tubing for kinks, cracks, or wear before every use this is the part of the system most exposed to daily handling.
Confirm the bur locking ring moves fully to its stop, in the direction indicated, rather than stopping partway.
Never exceed the 30-minute window between treatment and cleaning, even on a busy schedule.

Weekly Checks Worth Adding to Your Routine

Confirm the handpiece still runs near-silently and vibration-free against its documented baseline a change here often shows up before a more obvious failure does.
Check that air and water connections are seated fully and show no signs of wear, since Bien-Air's own troubleshooting documentation names faulty connections as a specific fault category.

Sterilization Specifics You Shouldn't Guess At

Step	What Bien-Air Specifies
Pre-first-use	Clean, dry, lubricate, and sterilize before the device is used for the first time
Post-treatment window	Clean, disinfect, and lubricate within a maximum of 30 minutes
Pre-surgical requirement	Sterilize before surgical treatment, not only after
Applies to	Both the handpiece and the nose

Storage Between Procedures

Store the handpiece sterilized and packaged until the moment it's needed, especially given the pre-surgical sterilization requirement.
Keep a supply of fresh, sealed disposable external tubing on hand rather than reaching for a previously used length.

End-of-Life Handling Isn't an Afterthought

When a PM 1:1 EXT. reaches the end of its usable life, Bien-Air's instructions require it to be sterilized before being returned to a dealer or an authorized recovery body a documented step specifically aimed at avoiding contamination risk during disposal or recycling, not just during clinical use.

Mistakes That Undermine an Otherwise Good Routine

Letting more than 30 minutes pass before cleaning. This is a specific, documented ceiling, not an approximate guideline.
Reusing external tubing. It's a disposable, sterile-supply component by design.
Treating first-use setup as optional. A new handpiece still needs the full clean-dry-lubricate-sterilize sequence before it ever touches a patient.
Sterilizing only after surgical use, not before. Bien-Air's guidance for this instrument category requires both.

What Practices Are Saying

“Building the 30-minute window into our post-op checklist instead of treating it loosely made a real difference in how the handpiece has held up.” — Surgical Assistant, Oral Surgery Practice

“We didn't realize sterilizing before surgery was a separate documented step from our regular between-patient routine until we read the actual instructions.” — Practice Manager, Implant Center

Frequently Asked Questions

Q How soon after treatment does the PM 1:1 EXT. need cleaning?

A Within a maximum of 30 minutes, per Bien-Air's documented instructions waiting longer risks residue blocking the transmission system.

Q Can I reuse the external spray tubing?

A No. It's a disposable, sterile-supply component designed for single use, not a reusable part of the handpiece.
