PROPHYflex 4 Clogged or Not Cleaning? What KaVo Recommends, Step by Step

A clogged PROPHYflex 4 can usually be cleared in the clinic. KaVo's FAQs explain that, for heavy clogging, the nozzle can be unscrewed with the rear of the cannula key and the powder tube cleaned from both sides with the cleaning burr. Before you do that, rule out the simpler causes below.

First, Check the Power Setting

KaVo states the lowest setting is almost powderless. It is designed to rinse leftover powder away, not to remove discolouration. If you see little or no powder, check that the device is not set to the lowest level.

Clearing a Heavy Clog

Remove the device from the coupling.
Unscrew the nozzle using the rear of the cannula key, as KaVo describes.
Clean the powder tube from both sides with the cleaning burr.
Refit the nozzle, then test on the lowest setting before refilling with fresh, dry powder.

"It Cleans Less Than My Old Device"

KaVo explains that the PROPHYflex 4 cannula produces a narrower, more homogeneous and gentler stream than conventional systems, which makes it less abrasive. If cleaning feels weaker, KaVo advises checking the power setting. KaVo adds that higher-abrasive powders can be used because the system makes them gentler.

Powder and Moisture Problems

Use only KaVo powders. KaVo states non-KaVo powders cannot be used.
Check expiry dates. KaVo gives shelf lives from 2 to 5 years depending on the powder.
Discard damp or clumped powder. KaVo states powder must not be reused.
Check the air supply. KaVo states compressed air for PROPHYflex devices must be free of moisture.

Symptom Checklist

PROPHYflex 4 symptom checklist

Symptom	First check	Next step
No powder	Power setting not on lowest	Check powder and nozzle
Weak or sputtering jet	Damp or expired powder	Clear nozzle and powder tube
Less cleaning than expected	Power setting	KaVo notes the stream is gentler by design
Clog returns immediately	Air moisture	Professional service
Leaks or loose fit	Coupling seating	Professional service

When to Stop Using It

KaVo's instructions for use include safety sections on air embolism and skin emphysema. Take the device out of service if it is cracked, leaks from the body, will not lock to the coupling, or keeps clogging after correct cleaning.

Subgingival Set-Up Problems

KaVo's subgingival workflow is to attach the perio tip, fill the container with Perio Powder and choose the right performance level. If the perio jet is weak, check that Perio Powder is in the container, that the tip is not blocked and that the level is not on the lowest setting.

Problems After Reprocessing

KaVo states the reprocessing seal must be fitted for mechanical reprocessing so cleaning media reach the powder tube.
If the cannula thread may be contaminated, reprocess the cannula and holding part separately.
Make sure all parts are completely dry before refilling with powder.
