Know Your Configuration Before You Start

The single most important maintenance decision happens before you touch the handpiece: confirming whether it's Lubricated or LubeFree. DENTALEZ's own guidance is direct about this lubrication instructions apply to lubricated handpieces only, and lubricating a LubeFree unit even once means it will need lubrication from that point forward. Check your configuration before following any step below.

Daily Care

▪ For Lubricated Configurations Only

Lubricate once daily, and again immediately before each sterilization cycle, using DENTALEZ's specified DentaLube II lubricant.
Apply it through the drive air tube at the rear of the handpiece using the manufacturer-specified applicator tip.
Use exactly three drops DENTALEZ specifically notes that only three drops are needed, not more.
Disconnect the handpiece from the delivery unit before lubricating.

▪ For LubeFree Configurations

Do not apply lubricant of any kind. LubeFree handpieces are designed to run without it, and introducing lubricant changes the unit's maintenance requirements permanently.
Daily care is limited to visual inspection, debris removal, and the sterilization cycle described below.

Weekly Care

▪ Chuck Cleaning

This applies to both Lubricated and LubeFree units. DENTALEZ recommends cleaning the chuck once a week, prior to sterilization, using a dedicated chuck cleaner, to keep the chuck holding burs securely and prevent grip failure over time.

▪ Visual Inspection

Check the fiber-optic lens (on FO models) for film, debris, or scratching that could dim illumination.
Inspect O-rings at the coupling connection for visible wear, flattening, or cracking.
Confirm the grip surface is intact and free of embedded debris.

VERIFIED MINIMUM, NOT MAXIMUM

These are DENTALEZ's baseline intervals for the Star line generally. High-volume operatories multiple procedures per handpiece per day may need chuck cleaning more often than once a week; DENTALEZ's published guidance is a floor, not a ceiling.

Sterilization: The Official DENTALEZ Protocol

This is the step most responsible for long-term turbine and bearing life when done incorrectly inadequate drying time is a documented contributor to internal corrosion. DENTALEZ's published autoclave parameters:

Autoclave Type	Cycle
Gravity type	Minimum 15 min at 132°C, or minimum 30 min at 121°C. Do not exceed 135°C.
Pre-vacuum type	Minimum 4 min at 132°C.
Drying	Minimum 30 min using the sterilizer's dry cycle.

▪ Before Sterilizing

Remove and clean the bur; store it in an autoclavable bur block.
For lubricated units, lubricate immediately before bagging, per the daily care steps above.
Bag each handpiece individually in a bag sized for it don't sterilize multiple handpieces loose in one bag.

▪ After Sterilizing

Allow the handpiece to dry fully and cool to room temperature inside its sealed bag before use.
If moisture is visible in the bag, extend the dry cycle rather than proceeding.
Never run the handpiece under water to cool it faster this is explicitly listed as a don't in DENTALEZ's own maintenance guidance.

Monthly & Periodic Care

1	Confirm turbine performance under load. A gradual power drop across a month of use is often the first sign of bearing wear, well before a full stall.

2	Log service history. DENTALEZ publishes a dedicated handpiece log book track cleaning, lubrication, and repair dates per handpiece rather than relying on memory.

3	Recheck warranty registration. Especially after any turbine replacement, since turbine warranty coverage begins on the date of insertion and requires registration within 12 months.

Storage Between Uses

Store handpieces upright where possible, and keep them in their sterilization bag until the next use rather than leaving them exposed on a tray.
Keep lubricated and LubeFree units clearly separated and labeled mixing up which is which is the fastest way to accidentally lubricate a LubeFree unit

Mistakes That Shorten Handpiece Life

Skipping the dry cycle. Trapped moisture is a documented cause of internal corrosion and early turbine failure.
Lubricating a LubeFree unit “just to be safe.” It permanently changes that unit's maintenance needs.
Treating chuck cleaning as optional. A loose chuck is a common, preventable cause of bur retention failure.
Cooling a hot handpiece under running water. Specifically flagged as a don't in DENTALEZ's official guidance.
Letting registration lapse. A handpiece or turbine outside its registration window loses warranty protection even if the part itself is otherwise fine.

Extending the Life of Your Star 440

Every step above traces back to one theme: consistency. A handpiece lubricated (or correctly left unlubricated) on schedule, sterilized with a full dry cycle, and chuck-cleaned weekly will outlast one that only gets attention after something starts sounding wrong. What Practices Are Saying

“Splitting the lubricated and LubeFree units onto separate trays with labels was such a simple fix, but it stopped the mix-ups we kept having between operatories.” — Sterilization Lead, Group Dental Practice

“Following DENTALEZ's actual dry-cycle time instead of rushing it made a noticeable difference in how long our turbines last.” — Lead Dental Assistant, Family Dental Clinic

Frequently Asked Questions

Q How often should I lubricate a Lubricated Star 440?

A Daily, and again immediately before every sterilization cycle, using three drops of DENTALEZ-specified lubricant in the drive air tube.

Q Can I lubricate a LubeFree Star 440 as extra precaution?

A No. DENTALEZ states that lubricating a LubeFree handpiece even once means it will require lubrication going forward it's not a one-time optional step, it's a permanent change to that unit's maintenance profile.

Q What autoclave settings does DENTALEZ recommend?

A Gravity autoclaves: minimum 15 minutes at 132°C or minimum 30 minutes at 121°C, never exceeding 135°C. Pre-vacuum autoclaves: minimum 4 minutes at 132°C, with at least 30 minutes of drying time.

Q How often should the chuck be cleaned?

A At minimum, weekly, prior to sterilization, using a dedicated chuck cleaner DENTALEZ lists this as separate from turbine and general lubrication care.
