The Star 500 Elite adds real torque and an embedded RFID tag to the standard Star handpiece formula, but the maintenance fundamentals don't change: lubrication (or the deliberate lack of it), chuck care, and sterilization discipline are still what determines whether this handpiece performs consistently for years. Every step below comes directly from DENTALEZ's own published instructions.

Know Your Configuration Before You Start

DENTALEZ's own instruction manual documents four SKUs for the Star 500 Elite, and the single most important maintenance decision is knowing which one you have before you touch it.

Configuration	Fiber Optic	Non-Fiber Optic
LubeFree	SKU 266040	SKU 266041
Lubricated	SKU 266071	SKU 266072 (confirm with DENTALEZ / suppli

DON'T CROSS THE STREAMS

As with the rest of the Star line, lubrication instructions apply to Lubricated handpieces only. Introducing lubricant to a LubeFree unit changes what that specific handpiece needs going forward confirm your SKU before starting any lubrication routine.

Daily Care

▪ For Lubricated Configurations Only

Lubricate daily, and again immediately before each sterilization cycle, using DENTALEZ's specified handpiece lubricant.
Apply through the drive air tube at the rear of the handpiece using the manufacturer-specified applicator.
Disconnect the handpiece from the delivery unit before lubricating

▪ For LubeFree Configurations5

Do not apply any lubricant. LubeFree handpieces are designed to run without it.
Daily care is limited to visual inspection, debris removal, and the sterilization cycle described below

Weekly Care

▪ Chuck Cleaning

This applies to every configuration, Lubricated or LubeFree. Clean the chuck weekly, prior to sterilization, using a dedicated chuck cleaner, to keep it holding burs securely.

▪ Swivel and Anti-Retraction Valve Check

The 500 Elite's Aeras swivel includes an anti-retraction valve designed to keep water from being drawn back into the delivery unit. Inspect the swivel connection weekly for wear or damage that could compromise that seal.

▪ Visual Inspection

Check the fiber-optic lens (on FO models) for film, debris, or scratching that could dim illumination.
Inspect the swivel connection and any visible O-rings for wear, flattening, or cracking.

Sterilization

DENTALEZ's Star handpiece line follows a consistent sterilization protocol across models. Inadequate drying is a documented contributor to internal corrosion and shortened turbine life.

Before sterilizing: remove and clean the bur, store it in an autoclavable bur block, lubricate immediately before bagging if the unit is Lubricated, and bag each handpiece individually.
After sterilizing: allow the handpiece to dry fully and cool to room temperature inside its sealed bag before use. If moisture is visible, extend the dry cycle rather than proceeding.
Never: run the handpiece under water to cool it faster this is explicitly flagged as a don't in DENTALEZ's own maintenance guidance for the Star line.

Monthly & Periodic Care

1	Confirm turbine performance under load. A gradual power drop across a month of use is often the first sign of bearing wear, well before a full stall worth noting given how much torque this handpiece is expected to deliver.

2	Log service history. DENTALEZ publishes a dedicated handpiece log book. If you're running Aeras Intel with a compatible reader, usage and sterilization data can be tracked automatically instead.

3	Recheck warranty registration. Especially after any turbine replacement turbine warranty coverage begins on the date of insertion and requires registration within 12 months.

Storage Between Uses

Store handpieces upright where possible, and keep them in their sterilization bag until the next use.
Keep Lubricated and LubeFree units clearly separated and labeled to avoid an accidental mix-up in care routine.

Mistakes That Shorten Handpiece Life

Skipping the dry cycle. Trapped moisture is a documented cause of internal corrosion and early turbine failure.
Lubricating a LubeFree unit “just to be safe.” It permanently changes that unit's maintenance needs.
Ignoring the swivel connection. The anti-retraction valve only works if the swivel seal itself is in good condition.
Cooling a hot handpiece under running water. Specifically flagged as a don't in DENTALEZ's official guidance.
Letting registration lapse. A handpiece or turbine outside its registration window loses warranty protection even if the part itself is otherwise fine.

Extending the Life of Your Star 500 Elite

The 500 Elite is built to handle more demanding cuts than a standard high-speed handpiece, which means the maintenance routine matters even more, not less a handpiece running at higher torque puts more cumulative stress on the turbine bearing over the same number of procedures. For the failure patterns that show up when this routine slips, see our companion piece, the Star 500 Elite Common Problems & Troubleshooting Guide, and our general dental handpiece repair and maintenance service overview.

What Practices Are Saying

“Labeling the Lubricated and LubeFree trays separately solved the mix-up problem for us across every Star handpiece we own, not just the 500 Elite.” — Sterilization Lead, Group Dental Practice

“Checking the swivel connection weekly caught a wear issue before it turned into a real leak. Small habit, real payoff.” — Dental Assistant, Specialty Practice

Frequently Asked Questions

Q How often should I lubricate a Lubricated Star 500 Elite?

A Daily, and again immediately before every sterilization cycle, per DENTALEZ's published instructions for Lubricated Star handpieces.

Q Can I lubricate a LubeFree Star 500 Elite as extra precaution?

A No. As with other LubeFree Star handpieces, introducing lubricant changes that specific unit's maintenance requirements going forward it's not a one-time optional step.

Q Does the Aeras Intel RFID tag need any maintenance?

A No. It's a passive embedded tag with no battery or moving parts, so it doesn't require care beyond the normal handling and sterilization of the handpiece itself.
